Large-Scale Metasurfaces Based on Grayscale Nanosphere Lithography

Metasurfaces, based on subwavelength structuring, provide a versatile platform for wavefront manipulation in an ultrathin form factor. The manufacturing of metasurfaces, however, generally requires fabrication techniques, such as electron-beam lithography, that are not scalable. One alternative is the use of ultraviolet steppers, but these require significant capital investment and there are challenges in handling the large mask sizes that metasurfaces demand due to the structuring density. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel manufacturing method based on self-assembly of nanospheres in combination with grayscale lithography. This technique enables large-scale metasurfaces with nonperiodic phase profiles while being cost-effective. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a series of large-scale (1 mm diameter) metalenses demonstrating diffraction-limited focusing as well as holograms. This approach could open new doors to cost-effective and large-scale fabrication of a wide range of metasurface-based optics.

Bipolar Membranes With Controlled, Microscale 3D Junctions Enhance the Rates of Water Dissociation and Formation

A soft lithographic method is developed for making bipolar membranes (BPMs) with catalytic junctions formed from arrays of vertically oriented microscale cylinders. The membranes are cast from reusable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds made from silicon masters, which are fabricated on 2" to 4" wafer scales by nanosphere lithography. High-aspect-ratio junctions are made on a length scale similar to the thickness of optimized catalyst layers for water dissociation, creating a platform for probing the dual effects of catalysis and local electric field at the microscale BPM junction. Optimized polymer materials and nanoscale metal oxide catalysts are used in this study. 3D BPMs are tested under reverse and forward bias conditions, exhibiting superior performance relative to their 2D counterparts. Under forward bias in H 2- O 2 fuel cells, 3D BPMs achieve a current density of 1500 mA cm –2 , ≈7 times higher than 2D membranes made from the same materials.

Plasmonics-Enhanced UV Photocatalytic Water Purification

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is commonly used for photocatalytic decomposition of organic contaminants for the purpose of water purification. One promising method to enhance TiO 2 photocatalysis is the incorporation of surface plasmon resonance on its surface where photocatalytic reactions take place. Herein, a novel methodology using plasmonically tuned aluminum nanostructures to enhance the rate of photodecomposition of aqueous methyl orange is demonstrated. These nanostructures are tuned to the TiO 2 band gap in the UV regime and patterned on TiO 2 -coated substrates using nanosphere lithography. Compared to a blank TiO 2 film, the plasmonics is found to enhance the initial TiO 2 photocatalytic rate by up to 10 times, and further enhancement is possible upon refinement of the plasmonic technology.
