HMX detonation calculation using multi-reaction chain

Detonation of HMX has been simulated using a multi-reaction chain and species equation-of-states. A reacting flow code capable of handling arbitrary number of reactions and species has been used. Computational results are compared to the results produced by a pressure-based single reaction model (AJEX) and a temperature-based single-reaction model. Results show that the multi-reaction approach is capable of producing detonation calculations comparable to the AJEX model calculations, demonstrating that the multi-reaction approach possesses the properties required for the detonation modeling, a prerequisite of deflagration-to-detonation transition modeling.

Simulation of flame acceleration and deflagration-to-detonation transition with heat transfer in HE product and fractured HE

A simple heat transfer model has been developed for high explosives. For the gaseous high explosive (HE) product, the Smargorinsky eddy viscosity model has been adopted for estimating the turbulent thermal conductivity. Convective heat transfer in the fractured solid HE is modeled as the effective thermal conduction in the porous media, which is equivalent to the enthalpy flux carried by the velocity determined by Darcy’s law with Forchheimer term.Other features of the model include a multi-reaction chain, equation-of-state for each species involved, and a two-phase hotspot model. Test calculations are performed with various initial disturbances. Onset and progress of flame acceleration (FA) and chemical reactions are strongly affected by the heat transfer and initial disturbance. Staged development of FA also affirms the necessity of modeling based on a multi-reaction chain. When conditions warrant,e.g., stronger initial disturbance, FA evolves to deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT),demonstrating automatic capture of the DDT.

Application of the Multi-Species, Multi-Reaction Model to Coal-Derived Graphite for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Graphite is a critical material used as the negative electrode in lithium-ion batteries. Both natural and synthetic graphites are utilized, with the latter obtained from a range of carbon raw materials. In this paper, efforts to synthesize graphite from coal as a domestic feedstock for synthetic graphite are reported. Domestic coal-derived graphite could address national security and energy issues by standing up domestic supply chains for battery critical materials. The performance in lithium-ion coin cells of this coal derived graphite is compared to a commercial battery-grade graphite. For the first time, a multi-species, multi-reaction (MSMR) modeling technique is applied to synthetic graphite derived from coal. Key thermodynamic, transport, and kinetic parameters are obtained for the coal derived graphite and compared to the same parameters for commercial battery-grade graphite. Modeling of synthetic graphites will allow for virtual evaluation of these materials toward production of domestically sourced graphite.
