Nuclear structure advancements with multi-nucleon transfer reactions

Multi-Nucleon Transfer (MNT) reactions have been used for decades as a reaction mechanism, in order to populate excited states in nuclei far from stability and to perform nuclear structure studies. Nevertheless, the development of set-ups involving high acceptance tracking magnetic spectrometers (mainly existing in Europe), coupled with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) opens new possibilities, especially if they are used in conjunction with high-intensity stable beams or ISOL RIBs. In this article, we will discuss the capabilities of such set-ups aiming at different goals, including complete information in high-resolution spectroscopy as well as lifetime measurements.

The {sup 136}Xe + {sup 198}Pt Reaction: a Detailed Re-examination

We extend previous measurements of the transfer product yields in the reaction of E-c.m. = 450 MeV Xe-136 with Pt-198 by measurements of the product yields using Gammasphere. By recording events occurring in beam bursts and in between beam bursts, we are able to extend the number of measured product yields from 78 to 171 nuclides. Our new data span a much wider range of Z and A than observed in previous work and when compared to theoretical predictions, these new measurements provide a more stringent and thorough test of models of multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions.

Performance of the Particle-Identification Silicon-Telescope Array coupled with the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer

The Particle-Identification Silicon-Telescope Array (PISTA) is a new detection system designed for high-resolution studies of fission process induced by multi-nucleon transfer in inverse kinematics. It is specifically optimized for experiments with the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer at GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds). The array comprises eight trapezoidal ΔE-E silicon telescopes arranged in a lamp shade configuration. Each telescope integrates two single-sided stripped silicon detectors, enabling target-like recoil identification, energy loss measurements, and trajectory reconstruction. Positioned in close proximity to the target, PISTA’s compact geometry achieves high-efficiency tracking of target-like recoils produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions at Coulomb barrier energies. The spatial segmentation of the array allows precise determination of the mass and charge of the target-like nucleus, and excitation energy of fissioning systems. This work presents the particle identification and excitation energy reconstruction performances for the interactions of 238 U beam with 12 C target. An excitation energy resolution of 800 keV (FWHM) was determined together with mass resolution of 1.1% (FWHM). The combination of PISTA and VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer enables unprecedented investigations of the fission process as a function of the excitation energy of the fissioning nucleus, particularly for exotic systems produced in transfer-induced reactions.

Spectroscopy of 10 N with the invariant-mass method

Proton decays of $^{10}$N states has been investigated with the invariant-mass technique using data from two reactions. In the first experiment, $^{10}$N states were created via multi-nucleon knockout from a fast $^{13}$O beam. The second experiment involved proton pickup from a $^9$Be target to a fast $^9$C beam. Both data sets produce similar distributions with a peak centered at a decay energy of 2.8 MeV and a width of $\approx 2.5$ MeV. This result is consistent with a previous study using multi-nucleon transfer reaction which was originally fit with an $\ell$ = 0 resonance but later interpreted as an $\ell$=1 resonance. This later interpretation is affirmed as the proton pickup reaction should favor $\ell$ = 1. This strength is located near the predicted energies of two $\ell$ = 1 resonances in calculations using complex scaling and the Gamow shell model. Furthermore, the multi-nucleon knockout data also show excess strength below the main peak which is interpreted as contributions from one or more $\ell$ = 0 resonances.

Beta decay of the axially asymmetric ground state of 192 Re

The β decay of 192 75 Re 117 , which lies near the boundary between the regions of predicted prolate and oblate deformations, has been investigated using the KEK Isotope Separation System (KISS) in RIKEN Nishina Center. This is the first case in which a low-energy beam of rhenium isotope has been successfully extracted from an argon gas-stopping cell using a laser-ionization technique, following production via multi-nucleon transfer between heavy ions. The ground state of 192 Re has been assigned J π = (0⁻) based on the observed β feedings and deduced logft values towards the 0⁺ and 2⁺ states in 192 Os, which is known as a typical γ-soft nucleus. Furthermore, the shape transition from axial symmetry to axial asymmetry in the Re isotopes is discussed from the viewpoint of single-particle structure using the nuclear Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model.

Investigating nuclei produced in 9 Li + 11 B reaction

In this contribution, a preliminary analysis of the first part of the experiment S2012 conducted at the ISAC-II facility of Canada’s particle accelerator center TRIUMF in Vancouver will be presented. The experiment aims to study highly clustered structures of nuclei created in multi-nucleon transfer reactions of 9 Li radioactive beam on natural boron target ( 11 B and 10 B). The main objective of the experiment is to study exotic structures created in neutron-rich 16 C nucleus in the range of higher excitation energies. The analysis presented here probes the existence of exotic cluster configurations and the quality of detected results using the invariant mass techniques.

Properties of 187 Ta Revealed through Isomeric Decay

Mass-separated 187 Ta114 in a high-spin isomeric state has been produced for the first time by multi-nucleon transfer reactions, employing an argon gas stopping cell and laser ionisation. Here, internal $γ$ rays revealed a $T$ 1/2 = 7.3±0.9 s isomer at 1778±1 keV, which decays through a rotational band with perturbations associated with the approach to a prolate-oblate shape transition. Model calculations show less influence from triaxiality compared to heavier elements in the same mass region. The isomer decay reduced $E$2 hindrance factor, $f$ $ν$ = 27±1, supports the interpretation that axial symmetry is approximately conserved.

Evidence for an isomeric {pi}½{sup +}[411] state in {sup 183}Ta

We report on the identification of a new isomeric state in Ta populated via the ground-state -decay of Hf. The experiment was performed at the KISS setup at RIKEN, where neutron-rich hafnium isotopes were produced via multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions, followed by laser ionization of hafnium atoms, mass separation, and detection using an electron-gamma coincidence system. Isomeric spectroscopy was carried out by gating on different electron-gamma time correlations. A 459.1 keV -ray transition was identified in delayed spectra, and a half-life of μ was extracted through time-distribution fitting. The 459.1 keV state in Ta is known from previous work and has been assigned a Nilsson orbital configuration of , while a proposed new isomeric state above it is interpreted as a configuration that decays to via a low-energy, unobserved E2 transition. This is consistent with the systematic trends in neighbouring odd-A nuclei and transition rate calculations. Similar content being viewed by others

Simultaneous measurement of visible energy and momentum transfer in anti-electron neutrino interactions on hydrocarbon

Precise knowledge of neutrino interaction cross sections is required for current and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Precision neutrino oscillation measurements require inference of the neutrino energy and flavor from the visible particles in the neutrino interaction in the detector. This inference is different for the true neutrino flavors measured, electron and muon neutrinos, and can be studied by observation of neutrino interactions in an experiment’s near detector. However, anti-electron neutrinos make up only a few percent of an anti-muon neutrino beam and pose a challenge in making cross section measurements and predictions. The reported measurements were made using data from MINERvA, a neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment, with an anti-neutrino beam configuration of mean energy ~ 6 GeV. This thesis provides two double-differential cross sections of anti-electron neutrino inclusive charged-current reactions using the kinematics of visible energy, three-momentum transfer, and transverse momentum. The analysis is carried out at low three-momentum transfer, making it sensitive to regions with multi-nucleon effects.

CHARGED-CURRENT DOUBLE-DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTION MEASUREMENT OF ELECTRON NEUTRINOS IN LOW RECOIL REGION ON HYDROCARBON AT ∼7 GEV

Measuring neutrino mixing angles, especially the CP violation phase and mass hierarchy, is one of the priorities of the neutrino community and long baseline neutrino oscillation programs, such as T2K and NOvA, provided the most precise measurements to date. One of the dominating uncertainties of the measurements is the neutrino interaction model due to the difficulty of modeling the nuclear effects from first principles. As a result, neutrino scattering experiments such as MINERvA were conducted to provide data as input to reduce this uncertainty. This thesis presents a charged-current double-differential cross section measurement of electron neutrinos using the MINERvA detector in terms of available energy (a proxy of energy transfer), three-momentum transfer, and/or transverse momentum of the final state electron. This measurement focuses on the transition region between quasi-elastic and resonance processes, where the multi-nucleon knockout process dominates. The result is compared to a modified GENIE model and similar measurements using muon neutrino samples. In addition, this measurement reproduces the photon-like excess seen by previous MINERvA electron neutrino measurements.

Measurement of Charged Current Inclusive $\bar{V}_\mu$ Interactions and 2p2h Contribution Using the NOvA Near Detector

More precise measurements of the scattering of antineutrinos on nuclei in the few GeV region of incident energy, $E_{\nu}$, can reveal new aspects of $v/\bar{v}$ interactions and of nuclear structure, while providing information crucial to continued progress by neutrino oscillation experiments. This Thesis reports an investigation of charged current $\bar{v}_\mu$ interactions in the predominantly hydrocarbon medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The data are obtained with the detector exposed to a narrow-band $\bar{v}$ µ beam with spectral peak at E ν = 2.0 GeV, for a total accumulated exposure of 12.5×10$^{20}$ protons-on-target. The analysis expresses results in terms of three-momentum transfer,|$\vec{q}$| and available hadronic energy, $E$ avail . These variables approximate (q 0 , |$\vec{q}$|), the variables used in theoretical treatments of lepton scattering on multi-nucleon systems such as in 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) processes. This Thesis delivers two core measurements: Firstly, the double-dierential cross section $d^2σ/d|\vec{q} |dE_{avail}$ for inclusive CC $\bar{v}_\mu$ interactions in the NOvA detector medium is obtained. The cross section has a roughly gaussian shape in its projection onto |$\vec{q}$|, while being largely concentrated at values of $E$ avail below 100 MeV. The single diferential cross sections dσ/d|$\vec{q}$| and dσ/dE avail are also obtained, and are compared to predictions based on the GENIE v3.0.6 neutrino generator augmented with four different implementations of 2p2h reactions. Secondly, the contribution of 2p2h reactions to the CC inclusive scattering sample is determined. Its presence is characterized in terms of double-differential and single-differential cross sections. The latter 2p2h distributions are compared to predictions from two experimental data-tune models and from two theory-based models, namely the SuSAv2 model and the Valencia model. Both of the theoretical models underpredict the measured cross-section strength and predict a shape for dσ/d|$\vec{q}$| that is flatter than the measured shape. Thus, this Thesis provides new information about CC antineutrino-nucleus scattering in the vicinity of Eν ~ 2 GeV, and it highlights improvements that are needed in theoretical treatments of 2p2h reactions.

Measurement of muon antineutrino charged current - 0 meson scattering, using the NOvA Near Detector

Antineutrino interaction cross sections are, at present, poorly constrained, particularly regarding the role of multi-nucleon processes such as 2-particle 2-hole (2p2h) interactions. The associated crosssection systematic uncertainties represent a significant challenge for precision oscillation measurements, especially for the next generation of neutrino experiments such as DUNE. We present a new measurement of the muon antineutrino charged-current cross section without mesons in the final state, using the high-statistics data set of the NOvA Near Detector. The analysis employs a cut-based selection enhanced by machine learning techniques to isolate a high-purity sample dominated by quasielastic (QE) and 2p2h interactions. We present the cross section as a function of the kinetic energy and scattering angle of the outgoing muon. We also present measurements of more model-dependent kinematic variables such as the neutrino energy and momentum transfer, to better probe the underlying nuclear physics. The results are compared against various neutrino event generators to test the robustness of current interaction models.
