Analysis of Morgantown vehicle steering control

The proposed Morgantown public transportation system will use a fleet of computer-controlled vehicles operating on a separate dedicated network of roadways called a guideway. An automatic steering system on each vehicle will permit the traversal of the proposed route of various guideway sections. A preliminary study was made to analyze the steering control for the Morgantown vehicles. The primary requirement was to design an automatic steering system that would achieve a smooth ride and eliminate the need for excess margin in the guideway width. Front and rear wheel steering and front and rear sensing capabilities were assumed in the analysis. The system finally adopted front and rear wheel steering and front sensing was shown by computer simulation and vehicle steering experiments to be adequate.

Development of coal-feeding systems at the Morgantown Energy Research Center

Systems for feeding crushed and pulverized coal into coal conversion reactor vessels are described. Pneumatic methods for feeding pulverized coal, slurry feeders, and coal pumps, methods for steam pickup, and a method for drying a water-coal slurry in a steam fluidized bed subsequent to feeding the coal into a reactor vessel are included.

Systems engineering at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Work at the JPL in systems engineering is surveyed with the emphasis on practical experience with large hardware and software systems. Systems concepts in lunar and planetary projects, in the Morgantown project, and in the Urban Health Systems Task are discussed. Goal definition, problem statement, objective and criteria development, and synthesis, analysis, selection and implementation of systems are considered as successive steps in the optimization of the overall system.-

Application of the mixing-reaction in series model to NO/x/-O3 plume chemistry

The mixing-reaction in series model developed by Ghodsizadem (1978) is successfully applied to the study of NO oxidation in the near-source portion of the Potomac Electric Company's Morgantown, Maryland power plant plume. The model employs a single parameter. With initial conditions consistent with the plume data measured by Davis et al. (1974) and utilizing the mixing parameter estimated from the study by Shu et al. (1978), the predicted temporal profiles of the ratio of the concentration of NO2 to NO, of NO2 to NO plus NO2, in-plume concentrations of NO and O3, and fraction of NO remaining are consistent with field study data. In addition, the model predicts large deviations from the photostationary state in the near-source portion of the plume, also consistent with field study data. In the far field region of this plume (t greater than approximately 20 min), the mixing processes are essentially complete over much of the plume cross-section.

Gas cooled fuel cell systems technology development

The work performed during the Second Logical Unit of Work of a multi-year program designed to develop a phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) for electric utility power plant application is discussed. The Second Logical Unit of Work, which covers the period May 14, 1983 through May 13, 1984, was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy, Morgantown Energy Technology Center, and managed by the NASA Lewis Research Center.
