Simultaneous Q-switching and mode-locking in the CW Nd:YAG laser

The theory of transient mode-locking for an active modulator in a laser with a homogeneously broadened line is presented. The theory is applied to simultaneously Q-switched and mode-locked Nd:YAG lasers and good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained. The main conclusion is that under usual Q-switched operating conditions the mode-locking process does not have sufficient time to build up to steady-state conditions. We also present a method to overcome this problem by allowing the laser to prelase before the Q-switch is opened. Mode-locked pulses whose width approaches the steady-state value are obtained. The transient mode-locking theory presented here also applies to actively mode-locking TEA CO2 lasers and to other types of simultaneously pulsed and mode-locked lasers.

A study of compressed spatially non-Gaussian optical pulses from mode-locked lasers.

The effect of the grating-induced phase and spatial modulations by multiple transverse modes simultaneously present in mode-locked laser pulses is investigated. Our analysis shows that the dispersions of the grating pair become strongly dependent on wavelength because of the energy exchanges occurring among transverse modes. As a result, the maximum-intensity trace at the output of the grating is shown to be curved and the grating-induced pulse-compression rate is shown to vary significantly across the beam cross section. Also, a discussion is presented relating our analysis to existing experimental data on the wavelength-dependent chirping rates of mode-locked laser beams.

Effect of saturated frequency chirping on mode-locked laser pulses.

A dye-induced nonlinear frequency chirping is analytically shown to have significant modifications on the nature of the output mode-locked lasers. It is shown that the saturated frequency sweeping is responsible for substantial pulse broadening as well as substructures.

Q-switched, cavity-dumped, mode-locked laser

Continuous-wave laser can achieve higher rate of emission through Q-switching. Technique keeps Q, energy storage rating, of laser cavity at low value while ion population inversion is being built up. Then Q is suddenly switched to high value just before instability occurs.

Research in nonlinear optics

A theoretical investigation revealed that a steady state mode-locked solution appropriate to ultrashort pulses is induced by Kerr liquids. An experimental investigation using a Q-switched ruby laser passively mode-locked by the insertion of a Kerr liquid verified the theory. Pulses of about 10 to the -11th power sec were generated when the relaxation time of the liquid was temperature tuned to approximately 10 to the -11th power sec.

NASA multidisciplinary research grant

Research is discussed in the multidisciplinary areas of space and planetary science; materials and radiation; systems, instrumentation, and structures; and technology and man. Highlights are identified as an alpha-recoil track method of archeological dating; infrared astronomical telescope; reaction rates data, semiconductor radiation detectors, and analysis of time-dependent systems; Gunn effect devices for microwave generation and detection, mode-locked lasers, and radiation theory; and the application of a satellite communication system to educational development. Detectors to be flown on Apollo 16 to measure heavy particle flux in the solar wind and to be part of the HEAO-A experiment on extremely heavy nuclei in cosmic rays were developed. The impact of the multidisciplinary research on university activities is described, and individual departmental reports are included.

Measurements of speed of response of high-speed visible and IR optical detectors

A technique for measuring speed of response of high speed visible and IR optical detectors to mode-locked Nd:YAG laser pulses is described. Results of measurements of response times of four detectors are presented. Three detectors that can be used as receivers in a 500-MHz optical communication system are tested.

Efficient second harmonic generation of picosecond laser pulses.

Efficient conversion to the second harmonic (SH) using KD2PO4 and CsH2AsO4 crystals inside a folded cavity of a high-power-dye mode-locked neodymium-glass laser is reported. For the first time, frequency-doubled picosecond light pulses have been obtained in CsH2AsO4 with peak powers of the order of 1 GW/sq cm at 0.531 micron for an effective pump power density of 4 GW/sq cm.

Direct observation of the orientational Kerr effect in the self-focusing of picosecond pulses.

Direct measurements of the relaxation time of the birefringence within the self-focusing region of mode-locked laser pulses in several anisotropic liquids establish the importance of the orientational Kerr effect in the picosecond time regime. This result leads to some speculation as to the origin of the high degree of symmetry in the phase-modulated filament spectra observed with picosecond pulses.

Stimulated parametric fluorescence induced by picosecond pump pulses.

Stimulated parametric fluorescence emission tunable over the range from 0.96 to 1.16 microns has been obtained using a barium sodium niobate crystal pumped by a frequency-doubled and mode-locked neodymium:glass laser. The pump radiation in the form of a train of picosecond pulses produced infrared parametric fluorescence pulses, less than 10 psec in duration and with average peak powers on the order of 300 W when pumped with a power density of 300 MW/sq cm.

Optical modulator system

The fabrication, test, and delivery of an optical modulator system which will operate with a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser indicating at either 1.06 or 0.53 micrometers is discussed. The delivered hardware operates at data rates up to 400 Mbps and includes a 0.53 micrometer electrooptic modulator, a 1.06 micrometer electrooptic modulator with power supply and signal processing electronics with power supply. The modulators contain solid state drivers which accept digital signals with MECL logic levels, temperature controllers to maintain a stable thermal environment for the modulator crystals, and automatic electronic compensation to maximize the extinction ratio. The modulators use two lithium tantalate crystals cascaded in a double pass configuration. The signal processing electronics include encoding electronics which are capable of digitizing analog signals between the limit of + or - 0.75 volts at a maximum rate of 80 megasamples per second with 5 bit resolution. The digital samples are serialized and made available as a 400 Mbps serial NRZ data source for the modulators. A pseudorandom (PN) generator is also included in the signal processing electronics. This data source generates PN sequences with lengths between 31 bits and 32,767 bits in a serial NRZ format at rates up to 400 Mbps.

A novel laser ranging system for measurement of ground-to-satellite distances

A technique was developed for improving the precision of laser ranging measurements of ground-to-satellite distances. The method employs a mode-locked laser transmitter and utilizes an image converter tube equipped with deflection plates in measuring the time of flight of the laser pulse to a distant retroreflector and back. Samples of the outgoing and returning light pulses are focussed on the photocathode of the image converter tube, whose deflection plates are driven by a high-voltage 120 MHz sine wave derived from a very stable oscillator. From the relative positions of the images produced at the output phosphor by the two light pulses, it is possible to make a precise determination of the fractional amount by which the time of flight exceeds some large integral multiple of the period of the deflection sinusoid.

Study of self-focusing and self-phase-modulation in the picosecond-time regime.

Study of the propagation of a single picosecond pulse of a mode-locked Nd-glass laser in CS2 nitrobenzene and toluene by observations of the birefringence and spectral changes in self-focused laser light. Multiple second-harmonic probing beams are used for birefringence measurements in a single IR pulse in various portions of the active cell. The orientational Kerr effect is found to be the prime factor of induced birefringence in nitrobenzene and toluene. The results for CS2 are also consistent with this mechanism and show that the duration of an IR pulse in the focal volume is less than that of the incident pulse. The properties of beams which are focused within the cell by an external lens are also investigated.
