Can magnetogenesis driven by dynamo instabilities in chiral fermion plasmas, favor Einstein–Cartan AdS cosmology?

In this letter we show that the magnetic field (MF) bounds induced by Einstein–Cartan–de Sitter (EC) with AdS anti-de Sitter spacetime geometry and fermionic torsion with chiral dynamo plasmas instabilities, with inhomogeneous uniform chiral chemical potential, indicates that there is a possibility, as far as magnetogenesis is concerned, that we may obtain more stringent results within ECAdS gravity, compared with general relativity (GR) limits obtained by Tsagas using torsionless magnetogenesis. Spinorial fermionic source with torsion induces a chiral plasmas oscillation. The time dependent chiral chemical potential, sometimes associated formally with torsion, (de Andrade, 2018), is obtained from chiral flipping equation. The MFs obtained from the present universe ECdS chiral dynamo model, meet the criteria of galactic seed fields with better limits within Tsagas range (Tsagas, 2015) seed galactic magnetic fields for dynamo mechanisms, than the bound obtained by chiral dynamos in torsionless AdS cosmology. Majorana neutrinos are used as spatial components of axial spin-torsion source of dynamo instability from neutrino asymmetry.

Magnetogenesis Mechanisms Through Wave Interactions in High Energy Density Plasma (Final Technical Report)

This final technical report identifies and explores systematically mechanisms of current generation and magnetogenesis in both natural and laboratory high energy density (HED) plasma settings, These mechanisms involve wave-plasma interactions. Current generation mechanisms that have been developed in other settings can be applied in new ways to high energy density plasma environments. Mechanisms that have been overlooked or considered negligible in less extreme settings may play a role in the high energy density plasma, where considerable free energy could be available in the form of intense waves or particle motion which in turn can create intense wave energy. These mechanisms may be present naturally in astrophysical settings or they may be arranged in laboratory settings.

Magnetogenesis from early structure formation due to Yukawa forces

Yukawa interactions can mediate relatively long-range attractive forces between fermions in the early universe. Such a globally attractive interaction creates an instability that can result in the growth of structure in the affected species even during the radiation dominated era. The formation and collapse of fermionic microhalos can create hot fireballs at the sites of the collapsing halos which inject energy into the cosmic plasma. In this paper we study a new phenomena which can take place in such models. We show that the injected energy can be partially converted into primordial magnetic fields and we estimate the correlation scale and the power spectrum of these fields. We show that they may be the seeds of the observed astrophysical magnetic fields.

Magnetogenesis by Wave-driven Momentum Exchange

When multiple species interact with an electrostatic ion acoustic wave, they can exchange momentum, despite the lack of momentum in the field itself. Furthermore, the resulting force on the electrons can have a curl, and thus give rise to compensating electric fields with curl on magnetohydrodynamic timescales. As a result, a magnetic field can be generated. Surprisingly, in some astrophysical settings, this mechanism can seed magnetic fields with growth rates even larger than through the traditional Biermann battery.

Magnetogenesis in a Collisionless Plasma: From Weibel Instability to Turbulent Dynamo

We report on a first-principles numerical and theoretical study of plasma dynamo in a fully kinetic framework. By applying an external mechanical force to an initially unmagnetized plasma, we develop a self-consistent treatment of the generation of “seed” magnetic fields, the formation of turbulence, and the inductive amplification of fields by the fluctuation dynamo. Driven large-scale motions in an unmagnetized, weakly collisional plasma are subject to strong phase mixing, which leads to the development of thermal pressure anisotropy. This anisotropy triggers the Weibel instability, which produces filamentary “seed” magnetic fields on plasma-kinetic scales. The plasma is thereby magnetized, enabling efficient stretching and folding of the fields by the plasma motions and the development of Larmor-scale kinetic instabilities such as the firehose and mirror. The scattering of particles off the associated microscale magnetic fluctuations provides an effective viscosity, regulating the field morphology and turbulence. During this process, the seed field is further amplified by the fluctuation dynamo until energy equipartition with the turbulent flow is reached. By demonstrating that equipartition magnetic fields can be generated from an initially unmagnetized plasma through large-scale turbulent flows, this work has important implications for the origin and amplification of magnetic fields in the intracluster and intergalactic mediums.

Spontaneous magnetization of collisionless plasma

Here we study within a fully kinetic framework the generation of “seed” magnetic fields through the Weibel instability, driven in an initially unmagnetized plasma by a large-scale shear force. We develop an analytical model that describes the development of thermal pressure anisotropy via phase mixing, the ensuing exponential growth of magnetic fields in the linear Weibel stage, and the saturation of the Weibel instability when the seed magnetic fields become strong enough to instigate gyromotion of particles and thereby inhibit their free-streaming. The predicted scaling dependencies of the saturated fields on key parameters (e.g., ratio of system scale to electron skin depth and forcing amplitude) are confirmed by two-dimensional and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of an electron–positron plasma. This work demonstrates the spontaneous magnetization of a collisionless plasma through large-scale motions as simple as a shear flow and therefore has important implications for magnetogenesis in dilute astrophysical systems.

Clockwork Axions in Cosmology. Is Chromonatural Inflation Chrononatural?

Many cosmological models rely on large couplings of axions to gauge fields. Examples include theories of magnetogenesis, inflation on a steep potential, chiral gravitational waves, and chromonatural inflation. Such theories require a mismatch between the axion field range and the mass scale appearing in the aFF~ coupling. This mismatch suggests an underlying monodromy, with the axion winding around its fundamental period a large number of times. We investigate the extent to which this integer can be explained as a product of smaller integers in a UV completion: in the parlance of our times, can the theory be “clockworked”? We argue that a clockwork construction producing a potential μ4cos(ajFa) for an axion of fundamental period Fa will obey the constraint μ < Fa. For a some applications, including chromonatural inflation with sub-Planckian field range, this constraint obstructs a clockwork UV completion. Alternative routes to a large coupling include fields of large charge (an approach limited by strong coupling) or kinetic mixing (requiring a lighter axion). Our results suggest that completions of axion cosmologies that explain the large parameter in the theory potentially alter the phenomenological predictions of the model.
