Magnetic Phase Diagram of 2D Magnet Fe 5– x GeTe 2 Revealed by Cryogenic Lorentz 4D-STEM

A two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe 5–x GeTe 2 (F5GT) exhibits room-temperature magnetic transition and magnetic anisotropy. Studies have identified diverse magnetic states, including stripe domains, skyrmionic type-I and topologically trivial type-II bubbles, depending on the magnetic and thermal history. Yet, the underlying micromagnetic energetics driving these states remains unclear. Here, we establish the magnetic phase diagram of bulk F5GT using cryogenic Lorentz four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy. We reveal that stripe domains spontaneously form upon zero-field cooling, while metastable magnetic bubbles are stabilized by external fields. Transitions from type-I to type-II bubbles are driven by an oblique external field. Micromagnetic simulations confirm that these transitions arise from the interplay of uniaxial anisotropy, dipolar interactions, and external fields, without requiring significant Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya Interaction (DMI). In conclusion, these findings clarify the micromagnetic origin of spin textures of F5GT and establish it as a tunable platform for nanoscale topological magnetism.

Diverse magnetic phase diagram and anomalous Hall effect in antiferromagnetic LuMn 6⁢ Sn 6

The interactions between conduction electrons and magnetism can significantly enhance the Hall signal, a phenomenon known as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). While the AHE is generally not expected in antiferromagnets, a large AHE is observed in certain antiferromagnets with noncollinear spin textures and nonvanishing Berry curvature. In this work, we present a rich temperature and magnetic phase diagram with eight distinct magnetic phases for the antiferromagnetic kagome compound LuMn 6 Sn 6 . The Hall effect analysis in LuMn 6 Sn 6 reveals both intriguing physical phenomena and methodological challenges. In the coplanar canted antiferromagnetic phase, we observe an AHE, which likely originates from the intrinsic effects. At low temperatures, upon entering the ferromagnetic phase, the AHE sharply increases and exceeds the conventional limits expected from intrinsic mechanisms. We also demonstrate the limitations of standard experimental methods in extracting the topological contribution to the Hall effect data. In particular, we show that accounting for magnetoresistance anisotropy helps reduce spurious contribution that can mimic topological Hall signals, although it does not fully resolve it. Furthermore, these shortcomings in current approaches in partitioning the Hall response necessitate new tools to interpret transport results in complex magnetic materials such as LuMn 6 Sn 6 .

Out-of-plane magnetic phase diagram of the Kitaev quantum magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

We have investigated the magnetic properties and mapped out the phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet Na 2⁢ Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 with Co 3d 7 in out-of-plane magnetic fields. This material has previously been proposed to show nearest-neighbor Kitaev interactions between Co spins and maybe even Kitaev quantum spin liquid behavior in high fields. At 0.01 T, we observe a thermal phase transition at T N = 27K, transitioning from a paramagnetic state to a canonical ferrimagnetic state. Upon increasing the magnetic field, a spin-floplike phase transition occurred before saturation of J = 1/2 between 10 K and T N . Below 10 K, a peak-dip-peak structure emerges between 10 and 17 T in the magnetic susceptibility (d⁢M/⁢dH) before the magnetic saturation, reminiscent of magnetization plateau behavior. The measurement of the magnetocaloric effect also shows dip-peak-dip behavior in this field range. Our data can be explained by an XXZ model with a single ion anisotropy and possibly small Kitaev and Γ exchange interactions. Finally, we also determined the magnetization saturation field that helps constrain the energy scale of the exchange interactions.

Magnetic phase diagram and multiple field-induced states in the intermetallic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl 4 Ge 2 with Ising-like spins

Geometrical frustration and the enhancement of strong quantum fluctuations in two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnets can lead to various intriguing phenomena. Here, in this work, we studied the spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl 4 Ge 2 . Thermodynamic and transport properties, such as magnetization and specific heat together with the resistivity measurements were performed. In zero field, two successive phase transitions were observed at T N1 = 1.75 ± 0.02 and T N2 = 0.49 ± 0.02 K, respectively. Under magnetic field, XXZ-type anisotropy was revealed with the moments pointing along the easy c axis. For B∥c, multiple field-induced states were observed, and the magnetic phase diagram was established based on the specific-heat and magnetization data. The temperature-dependent resistivity measurements indicate that NdAuAl 4 Ge 2 is a good metal. It is very likely that both the long-range Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions and the geometrical frustration play important roles in this case.

Magnetic phase diagram of (Mo 2/3 RE 1/3 ) 2 AlC, RE = Tb and Dy, studied by magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction analysis

We report the results of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements on (Mo 2/3 RE 1/3 ) 2 AlC with RE = Dy and Tb. Temperature and field-dependent magnetization as well as heat capacity were measured on a powder sample and on a single crystal allowing the construction of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram. To study the magnetic structure of each magnetic phase, we applied neutron diffraction in a magnetic field up to 6 T. For (Mo 2/3 Dy 1/3 ) 2 AlC in zero field, a spin density wave is stabilized at 16 K, with antiferromagnetic ordering at 13 K. Furthermore, we identify the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases induced by magnetic fields for both RE = Tb and Dy. The origin of the field induced phases is resulting from the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions.

Strain-modulated helimagnetism and emergent magnetic phase diagrams in highly crystalline MnP nanorod films

Here, we explore strain-modulated helimagnetism in highly crystalline MnP nanorod films grown on Si(100) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The strained MnP film exhibits a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition at $T_C$ ~ 279 K, and the FM to helical phase transition at $T_N$ ~ 110 K. The value of $T_N$ is greater than $T_N$ ~ 47K for the MnP single crystal, indicating strong strain-modulated helimagnetic states in the MnP nanorod film. The presence of significant thermal hysteresis in the helical phase indicates the coexistence of competing magnetic interactions, leading to the first-order metamagnetic transition. Similar to its single-crystal counterpart, an anisotropic magnetic effect is observed in the MnP film, which is independently confirmed by magnetic hysteresis loop and radio-frequency transverse susceptibility (TS) measurements. The evolution of the screw to the cone and fan phases is precisely tracked from magnetization vs magnetic field/temperature measurements. The temperature dependence of the anisotropy fields, extracted from the TS spectra, yields further insight into the competing nature of the magnetic phases. Unfolding of the different helical phases at $\textit{T}$ < 120 K (~$T_N$) is analyzed by the temperature- and field-dependent magnetic entropy change. Based on these findings, the comprehensive magnetic phase diagrams of the MnP nanorod film are constructed for both the in-plane and out of plane magnetic field directions, revealing emergent strain/dimensionality-driven helical magnetic features that are absent in the magnetic phase diagram of the MnP single crystal.

Magnetic phase diagram of A 2 [FeCl 5 (H 2 O)] ( A = K, Rb, NH 4 )

Here, erythrosiderites with the formula A 2 FeX 5 ∙H 2 O, where A = Rb, K, and (NH 4 ) and X = Cl and Br are intriguing systems that possess various magnetic and electric phases, as well as multiferroic phases in which magnetism and ferroelectricity are coupled. In this report, we study the magnetic phase diagram of erythrosiderites as a function of superexchange interactions and magnetic anisotropies. To this end, we perform classical Monte Carlo simulations on magnetic Hamiltonians that contain five different superexchange interactions with single-ion anisotropies. Our phase diagram contains all magnetic ground states that have been experimentally observed in these materials. We argue that the ground states can be explained by varying the ratio of $\frac{J_4}{J_2}$. For $\frac{J_4}{J_2}$ > 0.95 a cycloidal spins structure is stabilized as observed in (NH 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ∙H 2 O and otherwise a collinear spin structure is stabilized as observed in (K,Rb) 2 FeCl 5 ∙H 2 O. We also show that the difference in the single-ion anisotropy along a- and c- axes is essential to stabilize the intermediate state observed in (NH) 2 FeCl 5 ∙H 2 O.

Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

The 3⁢d 7 Co 2+ -based insulating magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quandum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here, in this study, we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the a and a* axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along c. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements, we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find additional high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after any combination of magnetic/electric field cooling suggests that a zigzag spin structure is more likely than a triple-Q spin structure at zero field. Finally, we investigate the hysteresis and first- or second-order nature of each phase transition and its entropy changes. With this information, we establish a map of the magnetic phases of this compound and its magnetic, thermodynamic, and magnetoelectric properties, and discuss where spin liquid or other phases may be sought in future studies.

High-field magnetic phase diagrams of the 𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 (𝑅=Gd–Tm) kagome metals

𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 (𝑅=Y, Gd–Lu) kagome metals are promising materials hosting flat electronic bands and Dirac points that interact with magnetism. The coupling between the two magnetic 𝑅 and Mn sublattices can drive complex magnetic states with potential consequences for spin and charge transport and other topological properties. Here, in this work, we use a detailed magnetic Hamiltonian to calculate and predict the magnetic phase diagrams for 𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 kagome metals within the mean-field approximation. These calculations reveal a variety of collinear, noncollinear, and noncoplanar phases that arise from competition between various interlayer magnetic exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropies of the 𝑅 and Mn ions. We enumerate these phases and their magnetic space groups for future analysis of their impact on topological and trivial bands near the Fermi surface.

Thermodynamic insights into the intricate magnetic phase diagram of EuAl 4

The tetragonal intermetallic compound EuAl 4 hosts an exciting variety of low-temperature phases. In addition to a charge density wave below 140 K, four ordered magnetic phases are observed below 15.4 K. Recently, a skyrmion phase was proposed based on Hall effect measurements under a c-axis magnetic field. Here, we present a detailed investigation of the phase transitions in EuAl 4 under c-axis magnetic field. Our dilatometry, heat-capacity, DC magnetometry, AC magnetic susceptibility, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements reveal three magnetic phase transitions not previously reported. The first key result is a detailed H ∥ [001] magnetic phase diagram mapping the seven phases we observe. Second, we identify a high-field phase, phase VII, which directly corresponds to the region were skyrmions have been previously suggested. Our results provide guidance for future studies exploring the complex magnetic interactions and spin structures in EuAl 4 .

$A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.

Magnetic phase diagram of a two-orbital model for bilayer nickelates with varying doping

Motivated by the recently discovered high-T c bilayer nickelate superconductor La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , we comprehensively research a bilayer 2×2×2 cluster for different electronic densities n by using the Lanczos method. We also employ the random-phase approximation to quantify the first magnetic instability with increasing Hubbard coupling strength, also varying n. Based on the spin structure factor S(q), we have obtained a rich magnetic phase diagram in the plane defined by n and U/W, at fixed Hund coupling, where U is the Hubbard strength and W the bandwidth. We have observed numerous states, such as A-AFM, Stripes, G-AFM, and C-AFM. At half-filling, n=2 (two electrons per Ni site, corresponding to N=16 electrons), the canonical superexchange interaction leads to a robust G-AFM state (π,π,π) with antiferromagnetic couplings both in-plane and between layers. By increasing or decreasing electronic densities, ferromagnetic tendencies emerge from the “half-empty” and “half-full” mechanisms, leading to many other interesting magnetic tendencies. In addition, the spin-spin correlations become weaker both in the hole or electron doping regions compared with half-filling. At n=1.5 (or N=12), density corresponding to La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , we obtained the “Stripe 2” ground state (antiferromagnetic coupling in one in-plane direction, ferromagnetic coupling in the other, and antiferromagnetic coupling along the z axis) in the 2×2×2 cluster. In addition, we obtained a much stronger AFM coupling along the z axis than the magnetic coupling in the xy plane. The random-phase approximation calculations with varying n give very similar results as Lanczos, even though both techniques are based on quite different procedures. Additionally, a state with q/π=(0.6,0.6,1) close to the E-phase wavevector is found in our RPA calculations by slightly reducing the filling to n=1.25, possibly responsible for the E-phase SDW recently observed in experiments. In conclusion, our predictions can be tested by chemically doping La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 .

Metal-insulator and magnetic phase diagram of Ca 2 RuO 4 from auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo and dynamical mean field theory

Layered perovskite ruthenium oxides exhibit a striking series of metal-insulator and magnetic-nonmagnetic phase transitions easily tuned by temperature, pressure, epitaxy, and nonlinear drive. In this work, we combine results from two complementary state-of-the-art many-body methods, auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo and dynamical mean field theory, to determine the low-temperature phase diagram of Ca 2 RuO 4 . Both methods predict a low-temperature, pressure-driven metal-insulator transition accompanied by a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition. Further, the properties of the ferromagnetic state vary nonmonotonically with pressure and are dominated by the ruthenium $d_{xy}$ orbital, while the properties of the antiferromagnetic state are dominated by the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. Differences in the details of the predictions of the two methods are analyzed. This work is theoretically important as it presents the first application of the auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo method to an orbitally degenerate system with both Mott and Hunds physics and provides an important comparison of the dynamical mean field and auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo methods.

Magnetic phase diagram mapping in Fe 1- x Rh x composition-spread thin films

We have fabricated high-quality polycrystalline Fe 1- x Rh x composition-spread thin films by cosputtering Fe and Rh, and investigated their structural and magnetic transformations as a systematic function of composition. With increasing Rh concentration, Fe 1-x Rh x thin film undergoes from an α' phase to a disordered γ phase and also shows a magnetic transition from a ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phase. Vibrating-sample magnetometry and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements show an antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in the range of 0.52 < x < 0.58 in the Fe 1- x Rh x composition gradient at room temperature. Based on our structural and magnetic property mapping, we construct a thin-film phase diagram of Fe 1- x Rh x . Compared to reported results in bulk alloys, the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in the Fe 1- x Rh x thin films was found to occur at slightly higher Rh concentrations, while the boundary between the pure γ phase and the α'/ γ mixed phase region is shifted to the lower concentration Rh.

Pressure–Temperature–Magnetic Field Phase Diagram of Multiferroic (NH 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·H 2 O

We combined synchrotron-based infrared absorbance and Raman scattering spectroscopies with diamond anvil cell techniques and a symmetry analysis to explore the properties of multiferroic (NH 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·H 2 O under extreme pressure–temperature conditions. Compression-induced splitting of the Fe–Cl stretching, Cl–Fe–Cl and Cl–Fe–O bending, and NH 4 + librational modes defines two structural phase transitions, and a group–subgroup analysis reveals space group sequences that vary depending upon proximity to the unexpectedly wide order–disorder transition. Here, we bring these findings together with prior high-field work to develop the pressure–temperature–magnetic field phase diagram uncovering competing polar, chiral, and magnetic phases in this system.

Phase diagram of magnetic shape memory alloy Ni 50 Mn $50–x$ In $x$ , 0 < $x$ , 25 from first principles, via spin cluster expansion and phonon vibrational entropies

The metamagnetic shape memory Heusler alloy Ni 50 Mn $50–x$ In $x$ exhibits a rich phase diagram featuring competing magnetic states, coupled magnetic–structural phase transitions, and strong compositional sensitivity. Existing first-principles approaches struggletocapturetheintertwinedchemical, magnetic, andvibrationaleffectsinthesealloys, necessitating a more integrated modeling framework. We develop a spin cluster expansion (spin-CE) framework augmented by a quasi-harmonic phonon model to capture both configurational (chemical and magnetic) and vibrational contributions to the free energy of Ni 50 Mn $50–x$ In $x$ over the full compositional range 0 ≤ x ≤25. The spin-CE includes both chemical clusters and composition-dependent Ising spin interactions, with parameters fit to a first-principles density functional theory (DFT) dataset. Using this approach, we predict the complete magnetostructural phase diagram and transformation temperatures of Ni 50 Mn $50–x$ In $x$ across the composition space. We find that vibrational entropy alone is insufficient to reproduce the martensitic transformation in the magnetic shape memory alloy regime, highlighting the essential role of magnetism. Incorporating both magnetic and vibrational contributions allows us to reproduce all experimentally known phases, including the disappearance of the stable martensite phase at a critical In concentration and the Curie temperature of the austenite phase. The method also captures the transition with increasing In in martensite from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order and predicts re-entrant ferromagnetism, though the latter occurs at higher In content than reported experimentally. We discuss possible sources of this discrepancy and highlight the broader applicability of the method to other magnetostructurally complex materials, where it may offer mechanistic insight and predictive design capabilities.
