Visible-telecom tunable dual-band optical isolator based on dynamic modulation in thin-film lithium niobate

Optical isolators are an essential component of photonic systems. Current integrated optical isolators have limited bandwidths due to stringent phase-matching conditions, resonant structures, or material absorption. Here, we demonstrate a wideband integrated optical isolator in thin-film lithium niobate photonics. We use dynamic standing-wave modulation in a tandem configuration to break Lorentz reciprocity and achieve isolation. We measure an isolation ratio of 15 dB and insertion loss below 0.5 dB for a continuous wave laser input at 1550 nm. In addition, we experimentally show that this isolator can simultaneously operate at visible and telecom wavelengths with comparable performance. Isolation bandwidths up to ∼100 nm can be achieved simultaneously at both visible and telecom wavelengths, limited only by the modulation bandwidth. Our device’s dual-band isolation, high flexibility, and real-time tunability can enable novel non-reciprocal functionality on integrated photonic platforms.

Isolation Standard Measures: A Set of Validated and Feasible Measurements Ensuring Comparability Across Isolation and Confinement Studies

Isolation and confinement studies have been essential to the preparation of crewed long-duration space missions, acting as analogues that facilitate the study of psychological and physiological responses to isolation and confinement. They also serve as opportunities for the development, testing, and validation of countermeasures and coping methods to handle the challenges that arise in such scenarios. Due to the small sample sizes in combination with high inter-individual variability, single isolation campaigns are not always sufficient for obtaining statistically significant scientific findings. To address this issue and improve comparability between different studies, the need for standardized measures to be collected in all future isolation and confinement studies was identified. Additionally, these measures should also be shown to be generally valid, reliable, feasible and acceptable in analogue and spaceflight environments. Standard measures in isolation and confinement studies allow for more direct comparisons of results and synthesis of data across isolation and confinement studies as well as provide an important step toward standard measures in spaceflight. An international expert group with representatives from different space agencies worldwide was brought together to define a core set of standard measures for isolation and confinement studies. This paper provides an overview of the expert group’s recommendations for international standard measures for future isolation and confinement studies, along with subsequent updates coordinated by the International Countermeasures Working Group (ICMWG), which was established as a sub-Working Group under the International Space Life Sciences Working Group (ISLSWG). Additional experts were consulted by the ICMWG partner agencies as required. The collection of the described set of isolation standard measures will provide data on the following parameters: sleep, mood, psychological state, psychophysiology, cognitive performance, stress and the immune system, general health and well-being, team measures, nutritional measures, and environmental conditions. For each measure, recommendations were made about duration and frequency of administration, along with specific implementation recommendations in relation to the duration of the isolation study. The set of isolation standard measures will be reassessed every two years at a minimum to ensure they are up to date and reflect the current state-of-the-art.

Understanding Line Losses and Transformer Losses in Rural Isolated Distribution Systems

Rural, isolated power systems in the mainland U.S. and in states like Alaska and Hawaii are powered by assets like diesel generators. These rural, isolated power systems also cannot operate at the higher band of medium voltage (like 69kV). They are primarily in the 12 to 14 kV range to keep the cost of the distribution investments lower. Because of this mid-band medium voltage range, the line losses and distribution transformers losses consume significant diesel consumption (almost 10 percent of the peak load). This work considers one such power system powering an isolated system and presents key findings online losses, and transformer losses. Understanding and documenting the impacts is critical for these communities operating their power systems and take actions to reduce expensive diesel consumption. In this paper, we will present one such typical grid and model it in electromagnetic transients (EMT) domain. We used the tower structure, under ground cabling installation to develop high fidelity models of lines. We also used high fidelity models of distribution transformers to present the no-load losses and full load loses. We will also present technical solutions available commercially off-the-shelf to reduce these losses and reduce diesel consumption. This work will be a primer for communities to understand the technical challenges and to understand the possible solution available to solve such challenges for rural, isolated power system operators.

Analysis of Salmonella enterica Isolated from a Mixed-Use Watershed in Georgia, USA: Antimicrobial Resistance, Serotype Diversity, and Genetic Relatedness to Human Isolates

As the cases of Salmonella enterica infections associated with contaminated water are increasing, this study was conducted to address the role of surface water as a reservoir of S. enterica serotypes. We sampled rivers and streams (n = 688) over a 3-year period (2015 to 2017) in a mixed-use watershed in Georgia, USA, and 70.2% of the total stream samples tested positive for Salmonella. A total of 1,190 isolates were recovered and characterized by serotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A wide range of serotypes was identified, including those commonly associated with humans and animals, with S. enterica serotype Muenchen being predominant (22.7%) and each serotype exhibiting a high degree of strain diversity by PFGE. About half (46.1%) of the isolates had PFGE patterns indistinguishable from those of human clinical isolates in the CDC PulseNet database. A total of 52 isolates (4.4%) were resistant to antimicrobials, out of which 43 isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR; resistance to two or more classes of antimicrobials). These 52 resistant Salmonella isolates were screened for the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes, plasmid replicons, and class 1 integrons, out of which four representative MDR isolates were selected for whole-genome sequencing analysis. The results showed that 28 MDR isolates resistant to 10 antimicrobials had blacmy-2 on an A/C plasmid. Persistent contamination of surface water with a high diversity of Salmonella strains, some of which are drug resistant and genetically indistinguishable from human isolates, supports a role of environmental surface water as a reservoir for and transmission route of this pathogen.

Ground Isolation Circuit for Isolating a Transmission Line from Ground Interference

This invention relates generally to a system for isolating ground interference from a transmission line, e.g., a ground isolation circuit for isolating a wideband transmission signal (such as a video signal) from ground by modulating the base signal on a carrier signal to permit the transmission signal to be isolated. In one embodiment, the circuit includes a pair of matched mixer circuits, each of which receives a carrier signal from the same oscillator circuit. The first mixer circuit also receives the baseband signal input, after appropriate conditioning, and modulates the baseband signal onto the carrier signal. In a preferred embodiment the carrier signal has a predetermined frequency which is at least two times the frequency of the baseband signal. The modulated signal (which can comprise an rf signal) is transmitted via an rf transmission line to the second mixer, which demodulates the rf signal to recover the baseband signal. Each port of the mixer connects to an isolation transformer to ensure isolation from ground interference. The circuit is considered to be of commercial value in that it can provide isolation between transmitting and receiving circuits, e.g., ground isolation for television circuits or high frequency transmitters, without the need for video transformers or optical isolators, thereby reducing the complexity, power consumption, and weight of the system.

HtPIP: High-throughput phage isolation platform increases diversity and reduces isolation time using multiple bacteria

Bacteriophages are ubiquitous in nature, but relatively few have been isolated and characterized compared to the number of bacterial strains. Phage biotechnology applications benefit from a diverse library of isolated phages to kill or transfer genetic material to a bacterium of interest. However, scaling up phage discovery for diverse bacterial hosts can be time-consuming and costly. Here, we developed an approach to capture novel phages for multiple bacterial strains in parallel from an environmental sample using commercially available 0.2-μM filter plates. Using this High-throughput Phage Isolation Platform (HtPIP), 12 novel phages were isolated spanning 9 diverse bacterial host genera. Eleven of the isolated phages define new phage species, with nine also defining new genera. The HtPIP was used to discover both DNA and RNA phages, including a Tectiviridae infecting Pseudomonas putida mt-2 and a Leviviricetes infecting a Microbacterium isolate, which represents the first cultured RNA phage infecting a host outside of Proteobacteria. Using a metagenomic approach, we demonstrate that the HtPIP captures a higher proportion of novel phages compared to traditional low-throughput methods.

A Novel Three-Phase Isolated LLC and Non-Isolated LCL-T Resonant Converter for Fuel Cell Applications

In this paper, a novel three-phase isolated LLC and non-isolated LCL−T resonant converter topologies are introduced for fuel cell applications. In order to improve the fuel cell DC/DC converter efficiency, the current amplitude should be reduced in the power stage components. Cascaded connections of fuel cell blocks through a controllable system enable using higher voltage amplitude and bring the current amplitude lower at the target power. In this way, power losses in the passive components can be reduced, and maximum energy transfer can be established, improving the DC/DC converter efficiency from the fuel cell to the load. The introduced new converter also achieves soft switching (ZVS), minimizing the switching losses in all input and output load conditions. The presented three-phase isolated LLC and non-isolated LCL−T resonant converter systems, fed by three fuel cell modules with an output range of 190380 V, deliver 580−730 V at 450 kW maximum output power. The results reveal that the proposed systems have the advantage of reducing the size, volume, and weight and increasing the overall DC/DC converter system efficiency compared to the single-phase systems.

Isolated resonator gyroscope with isolation trimming using a secondary element

The present invention discloses a resonator gyroscope including an isolated resonator. One or more flexures support the isolated resonator and a baseplate is affixed to the resonator by the flexures. Drive and sense elements are affixed to the baseplate and used to excite the resonator and sense movement of the gyroscope. In addition, at least one secondary element (e.g., another electrode) is affixed to the baseplate and used for trimming isolation of the resonator. The resonator operates such that it transfers substantially no net momentum to the baseplate when the resonator is excited. Typically, the isolated resonator comprises a proof mass and a counterbalancing plate.

Direct Exploration of the L2 Isolated Invariant Set Using Isolating Neighborhoods

Previous studies have used isolating blocks to explore the isolated invariant set around the L2 Lagrange point in the circular restricted three-body problem by computing trajectories on the asymptotic set and using them to track particular orbits. Once an initial map of the location of the orbits within the isolated invariant set projected into configuration space has been found, it is possible to further explore these orbits more directly by starting from appropriately chosen points within the mapped space. Here, we develop a method that uses these points to explore the periodic and quasiperiodic orbits within the isolated invariant set.

Model-based fault detection and isolation for intermittently active faults with application to motion-based thruster fault detection and isolation for spacecraft

The present invention is a method for detecting and isolating fault modes in a system having a model describing its behavior and regularly sampled measurements. The models are used to calculate past and present deviations from measurements that would result with no faults present, as well as with one or more potential fault modes present. Algorithms that calculate and store these deviations, along with memory of when said faults, if present, would have an effect on the said actual measurements, are used to detect when a fault is present. Related algorithms are used to exonerate false fault modes and finally to isolate the true fault mode. This invention is presented with application to detection and isolation of thruster faults for a thruster-controlled spacecraft. As a supporting aspect of the invention, a novel, effective, and efficient filtering method for estimating the derivative of a noisy signal is presented.

Contrasting effects of glutamate and branched-chain amino acid metabolism on acid tolerance in a Castellaniella isolate from acidic groundwater

Groundwater acidification co-occurring with nitrate pollution is a common, global environmental health hazard. Denitrifying bacteria have been leveraged for the in situ removal of nitrate in groundwater. However, co-existing stressors—such as low pH—reduce the efficacy of biological removal processes. Castellaniella sp. str. MT123 is a complete denitrifier that was isolated from acidic, nitrate-contaminated groundwater. The strain grows robustly by nitrate respiration at pH < 6.0, completely reducing nitrate to dinitrogen gas. Genomic analyses of MT123 revealed few previously characterized acid tolerance genes. Thus, we utilized a combination of proteomics, metabolomics, and competitive mutant fitness to characterize the genetic mechanisms of MT123 acclimation to growth under mildly acidic conditions. We found that glutamate accumulation is critical in the acid acclimation of MT123, possibly through consumption of intracellular protons via glutamate decarboxylation to GABA. This is despite the fact that MT123 lacks the canonical glutamate decarboxylase-glutamate/GABA antiporter system implicated in acid tolerance in other bacteria. In contrast, branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) accumulation was detrimental to cell growth at lower pHs, possibly through indirect mechanisms impacting the cellular glutamate pool. Genetic analysis previously linked MT123 to a population of Castellaniella that bloomed—concurrent to nitrate removal—during a biostimulation effort to reduce groundwater nitrate concentrations at MT123’s location of origin. Thus, our analyses provide novel insight into mechanisms of acclimation to acidic conditions in a strain with significant potential for nitrate bioremediation.

Ammonia-Assisted Light Alkane Anti-coke Reforming on Isolated ReO x Sites in Zeolite

The conventional reforming produces H 2 with stoichiometric amounts of CO and CO 2 from hydrocarbons. Here, we show that CO x -free H 2 can be produced from ammonia-assisted reforming (ammoreforming) of natural gas liquids (C n H 2n+2 + nNH 3 = nHCN + (2n + 1) H 2 , n = 2 or 3) at the same conditions as the steam reforming. Such a process co-produces HCN, which can be easily separated from H 2 and used as value-added chemicals or for NH 3 recycling through hydrolysis. In addition, the ammoreforming of ethane and propane was realized over the Re-modified HZSM-5 zeolite rather than the traditional Pt-based catalyst for the BMA process (methane ammoreforming). The specific activity of the Re/HZSM-5 catalysts at 650 °C is up to 1 mol H2 /g Re /min (or 180 min –1 ) during ethane ammoreforming. The catalyst is highly coke resistant and shows only slight deactivation with a time-on-stream up to 20 h. Characterization of the fresh and used catalysts by X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopies suggested that the isolated ReO x site grafted by AlO 4 – tetrahedral in the zeolite framework is responsible for the outstanding catalytic activity and coke resistibility.

Metal-Coordinated Phthalocyanines as Platform Molecules for Understanding Isolated Metal Sites in the Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) of non-precious transition metals (TMs) often show unique electrochemical performance, including the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). However, the inhomogeneity in their structures makes it difficult to directly compare SACs of different TM for their CO 2 RR activity, selectivity, and reaction mechanisms. Here, the comparison of isolated TMs (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) is systematically investigated using a series of crystalline molecular catalysts, namely TM-coordinated phthalocyanines (TMPcs), to directly compare the intrinsic role of the TMs with identical local coordination environments on the CO 2 RR performance. The combined experimental measurements, in situ characterization, and density functional theory calculations of TM-Pc catalysts reveal a TM dependent CO 2 RR activity and selectivity, with the free energy difference of ΔG(*HOCO) - ΔG(*CO) being identified as a descriptor for predicting the CO 2 RR performance.
