Intern Poster Session

This poster has been developed for display during the 2023 Intern Poster Session. The poster is apart of the Nuclear Research and Experiments category. The focus of this poster is on the modifications made to the design of an integral effect test (IET) facility currently being designed for a new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) design. My contributions made to the IET facility are laid out along with an explanation on some of the aspects of designing a new nuclear reactor. This poster covers the ideas and importance of scaling and IET facilities with the context of the standards set by the NRC. There are also graphics of some other examples of IET facilities developed for other reactor designs. My contributions include designing the piping and instrumentation layout of the IET facility using CAD software. This is a key step in the process of designing this IET facility and needs to be designed to avoid excessive head loss.

Summer 2024 INL Intern Poster Session Submission - Brian Schumitz

This LRS submission is my poster for the INL Intern Poster Session, Summer 2024. Abstract: The Software Engineering and Cybersecurity Lab (SECL) at Montana State University has developed PIQUE, a system for evaluating software quality. PIQUE's adaptability allows for language-specific static-analysis operations, including a model for assessing cloud microservice ecosystems. These ecosystems often rely on Docker for efficient deployment and management of containerized services. Our research focuses on evaluating the network quality within these microservice ecosystems. To automate this process, we're utilizing Snort, an open-source intrusion detection system renowned for its ability to detect and log network traffic. By leveraging Snort's customizable rules, we aim to construct comprehensive testing methods for measuring and quantifying the network quality based on traffic between Docker containers. This research aims to enhance the overall security and reliability of cloud microservice ecosystems by providing automated and robust quality evaluation mechanisms, ultimately contributing to the advancement of software engineering practices in these environments

Characterization of off-gas constituents from nuclear fuel reprocessing can be measured using a residual gas analyzer. Characterization of this off-gas is important in a closed fuel cycle, where gasses such as Nox, Kr, I, and C-14 need to be removed from reprocessing plants to meet regulatory requirements. Both Kr and Xe have low chemical reactivity, making capture and separation difficult. Solid sorbents can be used to capture these gases as an alternative to cryogenic distillation, which is energy intensive and hazardous. AgZ-PAN and HZ-PAN are two solid sorbents that have demonstrated selective capture of Xe and Kr. A residual gas analyzer can be used to obtain breakthrough curves that demonstrate how well this adsorption and separation occur. The breakthrough curve is dependent on packing density, column size, and flow rate. Data obtained from the RGA was verified with a gas chromatographer.

Intern Poster Session 08/13: Autonomous Nuclear Robotics: Applications in nuclear waste inspection and hot cell experiments

The nuclear industry is experiencing renewed interest in autonomous robotics, yet most deployed systems remain teleoperated with limited autonomy. This work presents two contributions toward fully autonomous nuclear robotic systems: autonomous waste inspection at the Hanford Site and an autonomous hot cell laboratory framework. Inspections of Hanford's underground waste storage tanks are performed manually at significant cost and personnel exposure. We developed a reinforcement-learning (RL) training pipeline for a custom-built inspection arm. In parallel, we are designing an autonomous laboratory framework for post-irradiation examination in hot cells at the Specimen Preparation Laboratory (SPL) that integrates computer vision, task and motion planning, hardware execution, and operator-in-the-loop control. These systems demonstrate a path toward safer, more efficient nuclear operations by reducing human exposure while maintaining rigorous human oversight at critical decision points.

Protecting Smart Buildings with STIG

This is a submission for the 2022 Intern Poster Session. The abstract of the poster is: Smart buildings are getting more common, and so are hackers that target them. The physical systems in our businesses and homes are now vulnerable to cyber attacks. Using STIG, an INL program that turns cybersecurity data into graphs, buildings can be better protected.

Coslett Intern Poster: Faster Cyber Attack Response Using STIG

This is a poster for the 2023 intern poster session demonstrating the most effective way to use STIG, a publicly available graph tool, for more efficient cybersecurity. Responses to cyber attacks can be implemented sooner if those shared are more generally applicable.

Modeling Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Startup Transients

A poster for the 2021 intern poster session. This poster details the RELAP-7/Griffin model developed for transient simulations to compare the effects of startup sequencing on the propellant efficiency, startup time, and maximum core temperature of a nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) system. The sequencing parameters under consideration in this study are the ramping rates of both reactivity insertion and hydrogen propellant mass flow rate. Recommendations are made regarding startup sequencing based on the results produced by this model.

New Developments and Verification of the Fusion Blanket Simulation Capabilities in the MOOSE Framework

This poster contains new developments and updates in the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework related to fusion modeling and simulation, and forms the basis for an on-going effort in modeling whole fusion devices at Idaho National Laboratory using MOOSE. In this work, a slice of the midplane of a proposed ceramic breeder blanket design for the Fusion Nuclear Science Facility is simulated using a combination of neutronics, 1D system level thermal hydraulics for helium, 3D heat conduction, and tritium transport. Previous work focused on the engineering scale full assembly of a blanket sector, but the simulations here form the basis for software quality and verification efforts to increase confidence as the large scale simulations continue. This poster was presented at the Idaho National Laboratory Intern Poster Session 2023.

Extraction of Value-Added Products from Food Processing Waste Using Dimethyl Ether

Poster for 2024 Intern Poster Session. Food production waste can be valorized to create a circular economy. Traditional extraction methods require pretreatment of the sample through heating or cell disruption, but this contributes to a majority of the process's energy usage for wet biomass. Using dimethyl ether extraction can combine the dewatering and extraction processes into one to skip the pretreatment step while still maintaining similar extraction rates.
