The potential of np GaAs solar cells for high efficiency concentrator applications

This communication considers the design of the front grid contact of np GaAs solar cells for high efficiency concentrator applications. This design involves shadowing, contact resistance, and active layer sheet resistance losses, and at high concentrations, the power loss due to voltage drop on the resistance of the grid fingers should be considered. Analysis of the performance can be calculated as a function of junction depth and surface recombination velocity. The junction depth can be optimized by considering its effect on the collection efficiency of the dark current-voltage characteristics or the open circuit voltage, and on the series resistance loss or the fill factor for material parameters. The choice of the material parameters, calculation of the short circuit current, the selection of the n layer thickness, and the cell maximum power and efficiency are discussed. It is concluded that optimized multi-grid structures should allow the use of 10 by 10 sq cm cells with good efficiencies at high concentration ratios, and efficiencies of 22 to 25% should be obtainable from large area cells at concentrations of 40 AM1.

Market assessment of photovoltaic power systems for agricultural applications in Morocco

Results of a month-long study in Morocco aimed at assessing the market potential for stand-alone photovoltaic systems in agriculture and rural service applications are presented. The following applications, requiring less than 15 kW of power, are described: irrigation, cattle watering, refrigeration, crop processing, potable water and educational TV. Telecommunications and transportation signalling applications, descriptions of power and energy use profiles, assessments of business environment, government and private sector attitudes towards photovoltaics, and financing were also considered. The Moroccan market presents both advantages and disadvantages for American PV manufacturers. The principle advantages of the Moroccan market are: a limited grid, interest in and present use of PV in communications applications, attractive investment incentives, and a stated policy favoring American investment. Disadvantages include: lack of government incentives for PV use, general unfamiliarity with PV technology, high first cost of PV, a well-established market network for diesel generators, and difficulty with financing. The market for PV in Morocco (1981-1986), will be relatively small, about 340 kwp. The market for PV is likely to be more favorable in telecommunications, transport signalling and some rural services. The primary market appears to be in the public (i.e., government) rather than private sector, due to financial constraints and the high price of PV relative to conventional power sector.

Efficient wire-grid duplexer-polarized for CO2 lasers

Chromium wire grid duplexer-polarizer for 10 micrometer carbon dioxide laser communication system is produced by depositing photo-resist film onto silicon substrate, grating by two collimated cadmium helium laser beams, covering of surface with thin chromium layer, and subsequent stripping of uncoated portion to expose etched wires.

Static continuous electrophoresis device

An apparatus is disclosed for carrying out a moving wall type electrophoresis process for separation of cellular particles. The apparatus includes a water-tight housing containing an electrolytic buffer solution. A separation chamber in the housing is defined by spaced opposed moving walls and spaced opposed side walls. Substrate assemblies, which support the moving wall include vacuum ports for positively sealing the moving walls against the substrate walls. Several suction conduits communicate with the suction ports and are arranged in the form of valleys in a grid plate. The raised land portion of the grid plat supports the substrate walls against deformation inwardly under suction. A cooling chamber is carried on the back side of plate. The apparatus also has tensioner means including roller and adjustment screws for maintaining the belts in position and a drive arrangement including an electric motor with a gear affixed to its output shaft. Electrode assemblies are disposed to provide the required electric field.

Advanced 30/20 GHz multiple beam antenna for future communications satellites

A multiple offset reflector system is being used to provide multiple fixed and scanning beams at 30 GHz by means of a polarization grid diplexer to separate two orthogonally polarized feed assemblies. Each feed assembly consists of multiple fixed and scanning beam feeds. The technology developments required for successful operation of this proposed system are presented. These technologies include: (1) an offset Cassegrain system for low sidelobe wide angle scan beams; (2) a diplexed beam forming network for overlapping low sidelobe beams; (3) a fast switching network for scanning beams; and (4) fabrication of precision feed components and large offset reflectors.

Satellite Power System (SPS) microwave subsystem impacts and benefits

The impacts and benefits to society of the microwave subsystem resulting from the developing, construction and operating of a space solar power to earth, electric power delivery system are presented and discussed. The primary benefit (usable energy) is conveyed mainly in the fundamental frequency portion of the RF radiation beam that is intercepted and converted to electric power output. The small fraction of the microwave and other electromagnetic energy that does not end up in the electric utility grid, yields most of the subsystem impacts. The impacts range from harmonics and noise radiated by the transmitting antenna, through potential interference with ionospheric communications and navigation caused by the power beam heating the ionosphere, to the potential large land area requirements for the rectennas and low level microwave radiation around the rectennas. Additional benefits range from a very low level of waste heat liberated and lack of atmospheric emissions including noise while operating to having no residual ionizing radiation from the rectenna when it is deactivated.

Solar photovoltaics: Stand alone applications

The Lewis Research Center involvement in space photovoltaic research and development and in using photovoltaics for terrestrial applications is described with emphasis on applications in which the normal source of power may be a diesel generator, batteries, or other types of power not connected to a utility grid. Once an application is processed, technology is developed and demonstrated with a user who participates in the cost and furnishes the site. Projects completed related to instruments, communication, refrigeration, and highways, are described as well as warning systems, weather stations, fire lookouts, and village power systems. A commercially available photovoltaic powered electric fence charger is the result of Lewis research and development.

Five-centimeter diameter ion thruster development

All system components were tested for endurance and steady state and cyclic operation. The following results were obtained: acceleration system (electrostatic type), 3100 hours continuous running; acceleration system (translation type), 2026 hours continuous running; cathode-isolator-vaporizer assembly, 5000 hours continuous operation and 190 restart cycles with 1750 hours operation; mercury expulsion system, 5000 hours continuous running; and neutralizer, 5100 hours continuous operation. The results of component optimization studies such as neutralizer position, neutralizer keeper hole, and screen grid geometry are included. Extensive mapping of the magnet field within and immediately outside the thruster are shown. A technique of electroplating the molybdenum accelerator grid with copper to study erosion patterns is described. Results of tests being conducted to more fully understand the operation of the hollow cathode are also given. This type of 5-cm thruster will be space tested on the Communication Technology Satellite in 1975.
