Applications of Fuzzy Logic for Tritium Sensing Technology

Fuzzy Logic is a mathematical method that can represent human-like decisions by analyzing vagueness. The project is a practical approach for evaluating sensors using a fuzzy group best-worst method. Results What is the best sensor? The fuzzy logic methods give an answer to that through a selection system. The relationship between the inputs and the outputs gives consumers an understanding of how the best sensor was found through a scoring of each quality/criteria and their corresponding sub-criteria through expert opinion.

An Investigation of the Wear Performance of Aged Inconel 718 Superalloy by the Fuzzy Logic Approach

In this study, the effects of δ, γ′ and γ″ phases on the microstructure and wear behavior of Inconel 718 alloy, produced by powder metallurgy technique, were analyzed experimentally and a fuzzy logic model was developed for the weight loss prediction after the wear tests. Aging process was carried out in two stages: firstly at 720 °C for 8 h and then at 620 °C for 6-10 h. Wear tests were performed at five different sliding distances (400-2000 m) for 1 ms{sup −1} sliding speed under 30 to 60 N loads. Weight loss prediction model was developed by using fuzzy logic method. SEM images of Inconel 718 alloy aged for 6, 8 and 10 h at 620 °C show intermetallic precipitates formed around particle boundaries. XRD examinations showed orthorhombic δ (Ni{sub 3}Nb), BCT γ″ (Ni{sub 3}Nb), FCC γ′ Ni{sub 3}(Al,Ti) hexagonal Laves (Fe{sub 2}Nb) phases formed in the structure with the same chemical composition and different crystal lattice. Accurate estimates were obtained in the developed fuzzy logic model. It was illustrated that this fuzzy logic model can be used successfully for the prediction of weight loss in wear tests of Inconel 718 alloy that was produced by powder metallurgy method.

Enhancing EV Motor Design Through Knowledge-Based AI and Hierarchical Fuzzy Logic Model

This work presents a novel approach to optimizing electric vehicle motor design through the integration of Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence (KB-AI) and Hierarchical Fuzzy Logic. Traditional motor design processes are time-intensive, relying heavily on iterative simulations and domain-specific expertise. These processes are further complicated by the nonlinear relationships between key design parameters. The proposed framework addresses these challenges by systematically encoding expert knowledge from scientific literature into a fuzzy logic system, allowing for the efficient handling of complex design variables. The hierarchical fuzzy logic model reduces computational complexity by decomposing the nonlinear relationships into manageable rule sets while maintaining design accuracy. The proposed methodology was applied to the design of a 100 kW motor, yielding optimal values for key parameters. This resulted in a compact motor design with a volume of 2.2 liters, showcasing the framework’s ability to deliver high-performance, application-specific motor configurations.

Applications of fuzzy logic and best-worst method for tritium sensor selection

Accurate assessment of tritium as a fuel source is critical in fusion reactions, necessitating effective sensor evaluation methods. This study investigates a multi-criteria decision-making framework for selecting tritium sensors, integrating fuzzy logic to enhance decision quality. Initial attempts at applying fuzzy logic were found to be too elementary and failed to capture the complexity of multi-criteria selection; this prompted a refined approach that incorporated expert insights and advanced ranking techniques for sensor evaluation. The research used a two-stage methodology. In the first stage, important criteria and sub-criteria for sensor performance were identified and defined. These criteria were then weighted and scored using a fuzzy best-worst method, drawing upon expert opinions to ensure relevance and validity. The second stage involved interpreting information about varying sensors to rank them based on their overall criteria scores, encouraging the selection of the most suitable options. The result of the study is a proposed method for effective sensor selection in fusion reactors, which in turn will significantly improve the reliability of tritium monitoring in fusion applications.

Fuzzy logic model of irradiated aggregates

The worldwide need for nuclear power plant (NPP) lifetime extension to meet future national energy requirements while reducing greenhouse gases raises the question of the condition of concrete structures exposed to ionizing radiation. Although research into the effects of radiation has a long history and the phenomenon of deterioration of concrete due to irradiation is not yet completely understood, the main assumed degradation mode is radiation-induced volumetric expansion of aggregates. There are experimental data on irradiated concrete obtained over decades under different conditions; however, the collection of data exhibits considerable scatter. Fuzzy logic modeling offers an effective tool that can interconnect various data sets obtained by different teams of experts under different conditions. The main goal of this work is to utilize available data on irradiated concrete components such as minerals and aggregates that expand upon irradiation. Furthermore, aggregate radiation-induced volumetric expansion gives an estimate of the change in mechanical properties of aggregate after years of reactor operation. The mechanical properties of irradiated aggregate can then be used for modeling irradiated concrete in the actual NPP structure based on the composition of concrete, the average temperature on the surface of the biological shield structure, and the neutron dose received by biological shield.

Independent temperature and humidity control of a precooled desiccant air cooling system with proportional and fuzzy logic + proportional based controllers

Providing room comfort quickly by using less energy in cooling systems is important both in terms of efficiency and environment. In this study, independent temperature/humidity control strategies are designed for precooled desiccant based evaporative cooling system to provide room comfort quickly with less energy. Therefore, the speed controls of the system's actuators become important depending on the room, cooler and atmosphere conditions. The mathematical models are obtained to determine the relation between voltages of actuators and the variations in the room's temperature and humidity. After that, new control strategies are developed based on Proportional and Fuzzy+Proportional techniques and the control performance is increased by adding extra modes to the operation of the actuators. The effects of the control techniques on the cooling performance and energy consumption were investigated for different cases. It has been observed that the room temperature and relative humidity reach the set values in a short time for both techniques and are successfully kept at these values under the disturbances. By using Fuzzy+Proportional controller, the robustness of the cooler increases due to more precisely adjustment of controller's parameter depending the system conditions. Finally, both control strategies provide more than 20% energy savings compared to the traditional ON/OFF control.

Fuzzy Controllers in the Adaptive Control System of a CNC Lathe

Traditional approaches to improving the technological system of CNC metal-cutting machines include increasing the rigidity, periodic maintenance and repair of its components, and operating at lower speeds. In practice, the most economical approach is stabilization of the inputs to the system. The development of adaptive control systems with stabilization of the cutting forces improves the precision and quality of machining in CNC metal-cutting machines, the productivity, and tool life. However, classical PID controllers are only effective in stabilizing the cutting forces in such systems if continuous real-time parameter adjustment is possible. That sharply increases the complexity of the controller. A new mathematical apparatus based on artificial intelligence (including fuzzy logic) permits the solution of adaptive control problems that previously could hardly even be formulated. The present work addresses the use of fuzzy logic in automatic stabilization of the cutting force for CNC lathes. Simulation of a fuzzy controller shows that this approach to automatic stabilization of the cutting force increases the machining efficiency on existing equipment with indeterminacy in the characteristics of the cutting system and the working environment.

Controlling the State of Machine Tools

Globally, manufacturers make great efforts to maintain the performance of industrial equipment. Developers and researchers are interested in automated approaches to maintaining the performance of equipment, especially at enterprises with high degrees of computerization and comprehensive information systems. In the present work, a new approach is outlined: an autonomous control system for maintaining the condition of metal-cutting machines. This approach is based on prior work in the field and permits maintenance on the basis of autonomous control of the state of machine tools. The structure of a system with the following generalized control functions is presented: decision making; and the issuing of commands on the basis of built-in resources. The formulation of control decisions employs the theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. By means of the ANFIS fuzzy network system, the autonomy of state control of the machine tool may be assessed. Criticality assessment of the condition of machine tools and their components is important in making decisions as to the setup of systems controlling the condition of equipment at enterprises, with assessment of their efficiency. In the monitoring subsystem, provision is made for assessment of the diagnostic results, prediction, and the generation of control decisions so as to prevent disruptions of machine-tool operation.

Convolutional Neural Networks for Hydrometeor Classification using Dual Polarization Doppler Radars

Traditional fuzzy logic hydrometeor classification algorithm is a common way to classify precipitation type from dual polarization doppler radar. We propose a deep learning-based method to estimate hydrometeors efficiently using observed radar variables such as horizontal reflectivity (Z H ), differential reflectivity (Z DR ), correlation coefficient (ρ HV ) and specific differential phase (K DP ) from National Weather Service NEXRAD collected at Vance AFB facility at the first elevation angle from January 1st, 2015 to July 31th, 2019. We stack matrices of values from these four polarimetric variables as one 3D array. Samples are preprocessed and divided into training, validation and test set with four target hydrometeor categories (Ice Crystals (IC), Dry Snow (DS), Light and/or Moderate Rain (RA) and Big Drops (rain) (BD)). We developed and optimized five Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) architectures and achieved an accuracy of 87.23% and 93.736% respectively using modified ResNet with two different input data selection strategies for hydrometeor classification. Training data selection strategies were important to ensure use of available samples in training for robust performance evaluated by applying the models to novel time period beyond what was use to train the model. Seasonal variation in atmospheric conditions lead to seasonal patterns of liquid vs solid forms of precipitation, that poses challenge for classifier and offer insights into domain specific approaches required for problem of hydrometeor identification. Computationally efficient and scalable approach for classification of hydrometeors offer opportunties to effectively use the large volumes of rich time series of radar observations that are becoming increasingly available.

Fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control for T-S fuzzy stochastic distribution systems subject to sensor and actuator faults

The problem of fault diagnosis (FD) and fault tolerant control (FTC) for a class of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy stochastic distribution control (SDC) systems subject to sensor and actuator faults is discussed in this paper. First, fuzzy logic models are used to approximate the output probability density function (PDF). Next, an adaptive augmented state/fault diagnosis observer is proposed to estimate the system state, sensor and the actuator faults simultaneously. New expected weights based on the sensor fault estimation information and a PI-type fuzzy feedback fault tolerant (FT) controller are designed to compensate the effect of sensor fault and actuator fault simultaneously. When the sensor fault occurs, the expected objective is redesigned to compensate the sensor fault. Meanwhile, the PI controller can compensate the effect of actuator fault, and the output PDF of the system can still track the desired PDF after the fault occurs. Finally, an example of quality distribution control in chemical reaction process is given to confirm the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Application of Selected Artificial Intelligence Methods in a System Predicting the Microstructure of Compacted Graphite Iron

Intelligent computing tools such as artificial neural network and fuzzy logic are used as predictive modeling tools. The use of these methods, combined with model experimental results, may be an excellent predictive tool, allowing us to forecast the microstructure of the tested cast iron at the level of computer simulation. In this study, the reference training cases collected in one database were used to determine the parameters of the neuro-fuzzy ANFIS model. They mainly include the results of observations and measurements of the content of individual microstructural constituents of the compacted graphite iron, examined as a function of the content of individual alloy additives (molybdenum, nickel and copper introduced in various proportions). The training process of such a fuzzy inference system is done by constantly changing its parameters (parameters of the membership function) and determining new rule conclusions as a result of presenting individual case examples from the training sample. The conducted research has shown the possibility of applying the ANFIS model as a tool to control the chemical composition of compacted graphite iron in the production of castings with high-strength parameters.

Fuzzified PaCcET for Economic-Emission Scheduling of Microgrids

In this paper, a new approach is proposed to solve a multi-objective economic-emission scheduling problem in microgrids (MGs) by simultaneously minimizing the energy and emission costs of the MG with various distributed energy resources (DERs). The proposed approach is an extension of a computationally effective multiobjective optimization technique, Pareto concavity elimination transformation (PaCcET). The proposed approach, referred to as Fuzzified-PaCcET, employs a fuzzy logic controller to dynamically revise crossover and mutation rates in the original PaCcET leading to the faster convergence of the solution. The proposed approach finds the best Pareto front, also referred to as a Non-dominated set (NDS) of solutions, instead of finding a single optimal solution. In order to find the solutions on concave areas of the Pareto front, an iterative objective space transformation is performed in the PaCcET algorithm to allow a linear combination of objective functions (in the transformed objective space). The proposed Fuzzified-PaCcET-based scheduling is implemented on a MG with various dispatchable and non-dispatchable DERs to find the set of optimal solutions according to the total fuel cost of DERs, as well as the most optimum environmental cost. In order to extract the best compromise solution (BCS) among NDS of solutions, a fuzzy-based method is implemented. The comparison of the simulation results of the Fuzzified-PaCcET with that of PaCcET shows that Fuzzified-PaCcET can generate better solution with less computational burden.

Optimizing and Exploring Untapped Micro-Hydro Hybrid Systems: a Multi-Objective Approach for Crystal Lake as a Large-Scale Energy Storage Solution

Increasing electricity demand and concerns about climate change and fossil fuel consumption have highlighted the importance of renewable energy resources and storage systems. This paper proposes a method for exploring untapped pumped hydro storage potentials to accommodate intermittent renewable energy generation profiles. Hourly measured data from 2022 in Benzie County, Michigan, United States, were gathered for system sizing and a thorough, realistic analysis. By employing the multi-objective grey wolf optimization algorithm, we formulated optimal sizing and energy-management strategies for three different scenarios. Unlike similar studies, the 3rd with triple objective functions (OFs) scenario aims to maximize both reliability and ecological OFs while minimizing the cost OF. It has shown promising results with multiple solutions, considering economic, environmental, and reliability factors. A case study conducted in Crystal Lake, Michigan, revealed that although Crystal Lake would function only as a micro-hydro power facility, it is a promising and huge storage unit with a substantial storage capacity of around 14.9734GWh. The system investigated is significant in the USA due to its rapid deployment capabilities, minimal construction requirements, and ease of integration with the distribution grid. The fuzzy logic method was employed to identify the best non-dominant solution among the other solutions. Furthermore, these outcomes include a notably low levelized cost of energy at 0.046147$/kWh, a robust index of reliability of 99.705%, and a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions amounting to 7.9142×10 3 tons/year, when considering the triple OFs. The paper’s methodology provides valuable insights for regions aiming to utilize renewable energy from untapped storage sources.
