Mars Science Laboratory Frame Manager for Centralized Frame Tree Database and Target Pointing

The FM (Frame Manager) flight software module is responsible for maintaining the frame tree database containing coordinate transforms between frames. The frame tree is a proper tree structure of directed links, consisting of surface and rover subtrees. Actual frame transforms are updated by their owner. FM updates site and saved frames for the surface tree. As the rover drives to a new area, a new site frame with an incremented site index can be created. Several clients including ARM and RSM (Remote Sensing Mast) update their related rover frames that they own. Through the onboard centralized FM frame tree database, client modules can query transforms between any two frames. Important applications include target image pointing for RSM-mounted cameras and frame-referenced arm moves. The use of frame tree eliminates cumbersome, error-prone calculations of coordinate entries for commands and thus simplifies flight operations significantly.

Methods of synchronization of telemetry frames using distributed and combined frame pauses

Two modifications of the method of frame synchronization by means of a frame pause were studied. The first does not require that all characters in the frame pause follow each other immediately. The second modification is based on the use of one particular type of redundancy within the frame to achieve frame synchronization without setting aside a special frame pause. Concentrated, distributed and combined frame pause are described and their uses compared.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Particle and Air Flow Through Additively Manufactured Lattice Frame Material Based on Octet-Shape Topology

Particle-to-supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ) heat exchanger is a critical component in next-generation concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. The inherently low heat transfer between falling particles and sCO 2 imposes a challenge toward economic justification of levelized cost of electricity produced through solar energy. Introduction of integrated porous media with the walls bounding particle flow has the potential to enhance the overall particle-to-sCO 2 heat exchanger performance. Here, this paper presents an experimental study on heat transfer characterization of additively manufactured lattice frame material based on Octet-shaped unit cell with particles and air as working fluids. The lattice structures were additively manufactured in stainless steel (SS) 316L and SS420 (with 40% bronze infiltration) via Binder jetting process, where the lattice porosities were varied between 0.75 and 0.9. The mean particle diameters were varied from 266 μm to 966 μm. The effective thermal conductivity and averaged heat transfer coefficient were determined through steady-state experiments. It was found that the presence of lattice enhances the effective thermal conductivity by 2–4 times when compared to packed bed of particles alone. Furthermore, for gravity-assisted particle flow through lattice panel, significantly high convective heat transfer coefficients ranging from 200 W/m2K to 400 W/m2K were obtained for the range of particle diameters tested. The superior thermal transport properties of Octet-shape-based lattice frame for particle flow makes it a very promising candidate for particle-to-sCO 2 heat exchanger for CSP application.

Data for A Fluorescence-Based Transient Expression Assay for the Analysis of Upstream Open Reading Frames in Plants

Scripts for the manuscript "A fluorescence-based transient expression assay for the analysis of upstream open reading frames in plant" by Haas et al. Upstream open reading frames (uORFs) are regulatory elements present in the 5′ leaders of mRNA that can significantly impact downstream gene expression in eukaryotes. In crop engineering, editing of uORFs can provide an avenue to upregulate expression of native genes without the need to add persistent transgenic copies. Even with genome- wide methods to identify translated uORFs such as ribosome profiling, their functional characterization depends on validation through reporter gene assays and mutagenesis studies. Current screening methods for plants use luciferases or protoplasts to measure differential gene expression between wild- type and mutated transcript leaders, which requires tissue processing and/or substrate addition. Here, we present a time- and cost- efficient alternative to investigate transcript leaders by co- expression of two fluorescent proteins in Nicotiana benthamiana leaf tissue and test our assay on genes involved in photoprotection, editing of which could provide a pathway to increase CO2 assimilation during sun–shade transitions.

Ultrafast molecular frame electronic coherences from lab frame scattering anisotropies

Electronic coherences in molecules are ultrafast charge oscillations on the molecular frame (MF) and their direct observation and separation from electronic population dynamics is challenging. Here we present a valence shell lab frame (LF) scattering method suited to probing electronic coherences in isolated systems. MF electronic coherences lead to LF electronic anisotropies observable by ultrafast angle-resolved scattering. Moment analysis of the LF anisotropy completely separates electronic coherences from population dynamics, demonstrated in excited state NH 3 using ultrafast time-energy-angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Overall, this general approach applies equally to attosecond/femtosecond electronic coherences in isolated systems.

TiO2 Nanocrystal-Framed Li 2 TiSiO 5 Platelets for Low-Voltage Lithium Battery Anode

Titanium-based anode materials are attracting considerable attention for use in high-performance lithium-ion batteries, but the compromised energy density caused by high voltage plateaus and unsatisfactory capacities severely retards their practical applications. Herein, a molten-salt synthesis of Li 2 TiSiO 5 crystalline platelets and a subsequent selective facet modification by in situ growth of TiO 2 nanocrystal frames are facilely achieved. The discharge voltage plateau at around 0.5 V renders the Li 2 TiSiO 5 anode safe compared with graphite and confers a high energy density compared with zero-strain Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anode. With the optimized size, structure, and content of modified TiO2 nanocrystals associated with the exposed (001) plane of Li 2 TiSiO 5 , the Li 2 TiSiO 5 -based anodes can deliver a capacity of above 300 mAh g -1 , enhanced rate performance, and a capacity retention of 66% after 10 000 cycles. In situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ transmission electron microscopy have demonstrated the structural stability of the anodes upon charge/discharge. Further theoretical calculation reveals 3D migration paths of Li + ions in Li 2 TiSiO 5 . The selective modification of in situ grown TiO2 nanocrystals on certain facets of crystallites opens a new door for the development of electrode materials possessing superior electrochemical properties.

Radio stars - A possible link between the Hipparcos optical reference frame and an extra-galactic very long baseline interferometry reference frame

The concept of typing the Hipparcos optical and the JPL VLBI frames of reference by means of VLBI measurements of the positions and proper motions of the radio components of some bright stars is considered. The properties of the thermal and non-thermal radio-stars are discussed and 22 candidate stars are selected to achieve this tie. A description is given of the first VLBI attempt to detect these stars on the intercontinental baselines of the Deep Space Network with the Mark II recording system.
