Electrochemical fluorination of trichloroethylene and N, N-dimethyltrifluoroacetamide

Fluorination of trichloroethylene and N, N-dimethyltrifluoroacetamide was carried out on a laboratory scale in an advanced Simons type electrochemical apparatus which could be operated automatically from ambient to 50 psi pressure. A variety of fluorine-substituted products are formed, depending upon electrolysis conditions and concentrations of reactant relative to the NaF, KF, HF electrolyte. A new reaction mechanism of electrochemical fluorination of trichloroethylene is proposed. The solvency-to-fluorine content relationship of fluorinated N, N-dimethyltrifluoroacetamide is described.

Electrochemical fluorination of trichloroethylene and N, N-dimethyltrifluoroacetamide

The paper presents the results of experiments concerning the fluorination of trichloroethylene and N, N-dimethyltrifluoroacetamide carried out on a laboratory scale in an advanced 'Simons' type electrochemical apparatus which could be operated automatically from ambient to 50 psi pressure. It is shown that a variety of fluorine-substituted products are formed, depending upon electrolysis conditions and concentrations of reactant relative to the NaF, KF, HF electrolyte. A new reaction mechanism of electrochemical fluorination of trichloroethylene is proposed. Finally, the solvency-to-fluorine content relationship of fluorinated N, N-dimethyltrifluoroacetamide is described.

Heat-Exchange Fluids for Sulfuric Acid Vaporizers

Some fluorine-substituted organic materials meet criteria for heat-exchange fluids in contact with sulfuric acid. Most promising of these are perfluoropropylene oxide polymers with degree of polymerization (DP) between 10 and 50. It is desirable to have DP in high range because vapor pressure of material decreases as DP increases, and high-DP liquids have lower loss due to vaporization.

Improved high-temperature resistant matrix resins

A study was performed with the objective of developing matrix resins that exhibit improved thermo-oxidative stability over state-of-the-art high temperature resins for use at temperatures up to 644 K (700 F) and air pressures up to 0.7 MPa (100 psia). The work was based upon a TRW discovered family of polyimides currently licensed to and marketed by Ethyl Corporation as EYMYD(R) resins. The approach investigated to provide improved thermo-oxidative properties was to use halogenated derivatives of the diamine, 2, 2-bis (4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl) hexafluoropropane (4-BDAF). Polyimide neat resins and Celion(R) 12,000 composites prepared from fluorine substituted 4-BDAF demonstrated unexpectedly lower glass transition temperatures (Tg) and thermo-oxidative stabilities than the baseline 4-BDAF/PMDA polymer.

ESCA Study of Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) Tetrafluoroethylene - Ethylene Copolymer and Polyethylene Exposed to Atomic Oxygen

The ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis) spectra of films of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), tetrafluoroethylene-ethylene copolymer (TFE/ET) and polyethylene (PE) exposed to atomic oxygen (O(P-3)), in or out of the glow of a radio-frequency O2 plasma, were compared. ESCA spectra of PE films exposed to (O(P-3)) in low Earth orbit (LEO) on the STS-8 Space Shuttle were also examined. Apart from O(P-3)-induced surface recession (etching), the various polymer films exhibited surface oxidation, which proceeded towards equilibrium saturation oxygen levels. The maximum surface oxygen uptakes for in-glow or out-of-glow exposures were in the order: PE greater than TFE/ET greater than PVDF; for PE itself, the oxygen uptakes were in the order: in glow greater than out of glow greater than LEO. Given prior ESCA data on poly(vinyl fluoride) and polytetrafluoroethylene films exposed to O(P-3), the extent of surface oxidation is seen to decrease regularly with increase in fluorine substitution in a family of ethylene-type polymers. (Keywords: ESCA; poly(vinylidene fluoride); tetrafluoroethylene ethylene copolymer; polyethylene; atomic oxygen; radio-frequency oxygen plasma; low Earth orbit)

Effect of halogenation on the nonlinear optical properties of porthyrin and substituted porphyrins

The effect that fluorine and chlorine substitution has on the nonlinear optical properties of porphyrin, tetramethylporphyrin and tetraphenylporphyrin has been theoretically studied. The calculations of nonlinear optical properties have been obtained by performing finite-field calculations on structures determined by semiempirical methods. In addition, tetra(p-chlorophenyl)porphyrin and tetra(p-bromophenyl)porphyrin were synthesized by the condensation of pyrrol and the appropriate aldehyde. Thin films of polymethylmethacrylate were obtained containing these materials, by spin coating onto glass substrates. The films were characterized by third-harmonic generation. It was determined that the experimental conditions enhance the third-order polarizability of the tetraphenylporphyrins by a factor of about 1.6.

Improved protection for silicon solar cells

Fluorinated ethylene propylene /FEP/ film is substituted for epoxy cement in bonding glass covers to silicon solar cells. Insensitivity of FEP to ultraviolet radiation reduces requirement for filtering and does not impair cell performance. Cell costs are reduced and cover mounting is simplified.

Trifluoromethyl-substituted polymers

Current work sponsored by the grant at Southwest Texas State University is directed toward the synthesis and characterization of: (1) N-alkylated polyamides derived from o-fluorinated diacids; (2) highly fluorinated polyethers; (3) polyesters derived from 2-hydroxy-2-propyl substituted arenes and/or 2,5-difluoroterephthalic acid; and (4) silicon-containing fluoropolymers. Work during the period from 1 July to 31 Dec. 1993 focused primarily on items 3 and 4 and on the development of a phosphorus containing modification of '12F-PEK.'

Trifluoromethyl-substituted polymers

The synthesis of polymers is discussed. It includes: (1) the synthesis of fluorine-containing crosslinked poly(ether ketones); (2) the synthesis and characterization of poly(imide amides) and their N-methylated analogues; (3) the synthesis of fluorine-containing aromatic polyethers; (4) the synthesis of novel fluorine-containing aromatic polysiloxanes; and (5) the conversion of 6F-containing polythioethers to polysulfones. It is hoped that these polymers will find use as low dielectric materials in electronic applications, function as thermal control coatings, or be suitable elastomeric sealants for extreme service conditions.

Non-aqueous cleaning solvent substitution

A variety of environmental, safety, and health concerns exist over use of chlorinated and fluorinated cleaning solvents. Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and the Kansas City Division of AlliedSignal have combined efforts to focus on finding alternative cleaning solvents and processes which are effective, environmentally safe, and compliant with local, state, and federal regulations. An alternative solvent has been identified, qualified, and implemented into production of complex electronic assemblies, where aqueous and semi-aqueous cleaning processes are not allowed. Extensive compatibility studies were performed with components, piece-parts, and materials. Electrical testing and accelerated aging were used to screen for detrimental, long-term effects. A terpene, d-limonene, was selected as the solvent of choice, and it was found to be compatible with the components and materials tested. A brief history of the overall project will be presented, along with representative cleaning efficiency results, compatibility results, and residual solvent data. The electronics industry is constantly searching for proven methods and environmentally-safe materials to use in manufacturing processes. The information in this presentation will provide another option to consider on future projects for applications requiring high levels of quality, reliability, and cleanliness from non-aqueous cleaning processes.

Comparison of type A and C Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) as cover materials for silicon solar cells

Fluorinated ethylene propylene film (FEP, 0.0127 cm thick) was heat and pressure laminated to silicon solar cells as a low cost substitute for quartz covers. The FEP-C, treated on one side for bonding, was compared to FEP-A, an untreated FEP. With FEP-A, a silane adhesion promoter was applied to the cells. The FEP-C covers delaminated during accelerated temperature-humidity testing and Earth environmental exposure testing; FEP-A covers were unchanged. No differences were observed in peel tests, but FEP-A is superior in its resistance to tearing and in retention of transmission properties after exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Syntheses and degradations of fluorinated heterocyclics

The relative stability of two ring systems, the triazine rings and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles, which offer potential crosslinks useful for curing perfluoroalkyl ether elastomers, has been investigated. Tris (perfluoro-n-heptyl)-s-triazine, the perfluoroether substituted-s-triazine, 1,4-bis/(5-perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl/benzene, its perfluoroalkyl ether substituted analog, and 3,5-bis-(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were synthesized and subjected to thermal and oxidative degradation at 235 and 325 C and to hydrolytic degradation at 235 C. The perfluoroalkyl ether substituted triazine and 3,5-bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were found to be stable under all conditions investigated.

Experimental and Calculational Studies of the Interactions of BF3 with Fluoroethers

BF3 was co-condensed with (C2H5)2O, (CF3CH2)2O and (C2F5)2O in excess argon at 15 K. Infrared spectra of the matrices showed a definite Lewis acid-base interaction between BF3 and diethyl ether; a weak but definite interaction with bis(2,2,2,-trifluorodiethyl)ether, and no observable interaction with perfluorodiethyl ether. Molecular orbital (MO) calculations complemented the experimental observations by revealing that fluorine atoms on the ethers decreased electron localization about the oxygen atom. Thus, the experimental data and MO calculations indicated a clear trend between strength of interaction with BF3 and the degree of ether F substitution. The implications of the results for commercial perfluoro ether lubricant/metal oxide surface interactions are discussed.

Crosslinking and degradation mechanisms in model sealant candidates

Heterocyclic ring systems were investigated, triazines and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles. Only a limited effort was extended to the preparation of triazoles. Compounds, n-perfluoroheptyl-s-triazine, a perfluoroether substituted triazine, C3F7OCF(CF3)CF2OCF(CF3) 3C3N3,1,4-bus (5-perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl -benzene, its perfluoroalkylether substituded analogue, and 3,5-bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were synthesized and characterized. To eliminate the effect due to a tertiary fluorine present in branched materials, the pure n-alkyl-compounds were prepared. The main starting material, perfluoro-n-octanonitrile, was obtained from commercially available perfluoro-n-octanoic acid via a three step synthesis.
