Topological Gauge Actions on the Lattice as Overlap Fermion Determinants

Overlap fermion on the lattice has been shown to properly reproduce topological aspects of gauge fields. In this paper, we review the derivation of Overlap fermion formalism in a torus of three space-time dimensions. Using the formalism, we show how to use the Overlap fermion determinants in the massless and infinite mass limits to construct different continuum topological gauge actions, such as the level-k Chern–Simons action, “half-CS” term and the mixed Chern–Simons (BF) coupling, in a gauge-invariant lattice UV regulated manner. Taking special Abelian and non-Abelian background fields, we demonstrate numerically how the lattice formalism beautifully reproduces the continuum expectations, such as the flow of action under large gauge transformations.

Charm physics with overlap fermions on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations*

Decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons D, D s , η c , and vector mesons D*, D$^{*}_{s}$, J/ψ are determined from the N f = 2 + 1 lattice QCD at a lattice spacing a ~ 0.08 fm. For vector mesons, the decay constants defined by tensor currents are given in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 2 GeV. The calculation is performed on domain wall fermion configurations generated by the RBC-UKQCD collaborations and the overlap fermion action is used for the valence quarks. Comparing the current results with our previous results at a coarser lattice spacing a ~ 0.11 fm provides a better understanding of the discretization error. We obtain $f$$^{T}_{D^*_s}$($\overline{MS}$, 2 GeV)/f D$^{*}_{s}$ = 0.909(18) with a better precision than our previous result. Combining our f D$^{*}_{s}$ = 277(11) MeV with the total width of D$^{*}_{s}$ determined in a recent study gives a branching fraction 4.26(52) x 10 –5 for D$^{*}_{s}$ leptonic decay.

Exact chiral symmetry with quantum signal processing

We give a quantum signal processing (QSP) algorithm for the overlap fermion Hamiltonian which preserves the Ginsparg-Wilson relation up to a controllable error $ε_e$. Quantum simulations of Dirac fermions with exact chiral symmetry are thus nearly free: applying the overlap Hamiltonian costs only a factor logarithmic in $ε_e$ more than the Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian. Comparing to domain-wall fermions, a mild overhead is found in circuit complexity while reducing qubit costs. We show how QSP effectively constructs an extra dimension when simulating the overlap operator, illustrating that the scaling of quantum algorithms reflects the deeper physics of overlap fermions arising at the boundary of domain-wall fermions.

Charmed and ϕ meson decay constants from 2+1-flavor lattice QCD *

Abstract On a lattice with 2+1-flavor dynamical domain-wall fermions at the physical pion mass, we calculate the decay constants of , , and . The lattice size is , which corresponds to a spatial extension of fm, with a lattice spacing of fm. For the valence light, strange, and charm quarks, we use overlap fermions at several mass points close to their physical values. Our results at the physical point are MeV, MeV, MeV, MeV, and MeV. The couplings of and to the tensor current ( ) can be derived from ratios and , respectively, which are the first lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) results. We also obtain ratios and , which reflect the size of heavy quark symmetry breaking in charmed mesons. Ratios and can be taken as a measure of SU (3) flavor symmetry breaking.

Studying QED 3 with radial quantization on the lattice: Free limit

To investigate the three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics in the radial quantization on the lattice, the lattice action is constructed and the free limit is studied on 𝑆 2 × ℝ. With the overlap fermion, it is numerically verified that the important symmetries of the theory can be realized on the lattice. The analytic correlators are derived and compared to the lattice results, which agree including the overall normalization. The 𝑂⁡(𝑎 2 ) scaling is confirmed toward the analytic value in the continuum limit, and the number of reproduced excited states is estimated heuristically for the first few refinement levels. Our study helps us identify the features of the theory that we can study on the icosahedral lattice without fine-tuning.

Trace anomaly form factors from lattice QCD

The hadron mass can be obtained through the calculation of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in the hadron which includes the trace anomaly and sigma terms. The anomaly due to conformal symmetry breaking is believed to be an important ingredient for hadron mass generation and confinement. In this work, we will present the calculation of the glue part of the trace anomaly form factors of the pion up to Q 2 ∼ 4.3 GeV 2 and the nucleon up to Q 2 ∼ 1 GeV 2 . The calculations are performed on a domain wall fermion ensemble with overlap valence quarks at seven valence pion masses varying from ∼ 250 to ∼ 540 MeV , including the unitary point ∼ 340 MeV . We calculate the radius of the glue trace anomaly for the pion and the nucleon from the z expansion. By performing a two-dimensional Fourier transform on the glue trace anomaly form factors in the infinite momentum frame with no energy transfer, we also obtain their spatial distributions for several valence quark masses. The results are qualitatively extrapolated to the physical valence pion mass with systematic errors from the unphysical sea quark mass, discretization effects in the renormalization sum rule, and finite-volume effects to be addressed in the future. We find the pion’s form factor changes sign, as does its spatial distribution, for light quark masses. This explains how the trace anomaly contribution to the pion mass approaches zero toward the chiral limit. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Flavoured warped axion

We consider a 5D extension of the DFSZ axion model that addresses both the axion quality and fermion mass hierarchy problems, and predicts flavour-dependent, off-diagonal axion-fermion couplings. The axion is part of a 5D complex scalar field charged under a U(1)PQ symmetry that is spontaneously broken in the bulk, and is insensitive to explicit PQ breaking on the UV boundary. Bulk Standard Model fermions interact with two Higgs doublets that can be localized on the UV boundary or propagate in the bulk to explain the fermion masses and mixings. When the Higgs doublets are localized on the UV boundary, they induce flavour diagonal couplings between the fermions and the axion. However, when the Higgs doublets propagate in the bulk, the overlap of the axion and fermion profiles generates flavour off-diagonal couplings. The effective scale of these off-diagonal couplings in both the quark and lepton sectors can be as small as 10 11 GeV, and therefore will be probed in future precision flavour experiments.

Generalized Ginsparg-Wilson relations: Fermionic anomalies on the lattice

The Ginsparg-Wilson (GW) relation elegantly captures how the anomalous chiral symmetry of a Dirac fermion manifests on the lattice. In this talk, we discuss how the GW relation and its closed-form solution, the overlap operator, can be generalized to Majorana or Dirac fermions in any dimension for finite symmetry transformations (continuous or discrete). We find an exact symmetry which reproduces both perturbative and global anomalies on the lattice. These generalized GW fermions are boundary theories of various bulk symmetry-protected topological phases and thus provide an explicit lattice realization of the fermionic bulk-boundary correspondence central to recent proposals for chiral gauge theories on the lattice.

Crossover between strongly coupled and weakly coupled exciton superfluids

Following a crossover Superfluidity in fermionic systems occurs through the pairing of fermions into bosons, which can undergo condensation. Depending on the strength of the interactions between fermions, the pairs range from large and overlapping to tightly bound. The crossover between these two limits has been explored in ultracold Fermi gases. Liu et al . observed the crossover in an electronic system consisting of two layers of graphene separated by an insulating barrier and placed in a magnetic field. In this two-dimensional system, the pairs were excitons formed from an electron in one layer and a hole in the other. The researchers used magnetic field and layer separation to tune the interactions and detected the signatures of superfluidity through transport measurements. —JS

Weighted nodal domain averages of eigenstates for quantum Monte Carlo and beyond

In this report we study the nodal properties of many-body eigenstates of stationary Schrödinger equation that affect the accuracy of real-space quantum Monte Carlo calculations. In particular, we introduce weighted nodal domain averages that provide a new probe of nodal surfaces beyond the usual expectations. Particular choices for the weight function reveal, for example, that the difference between two arbitrary fermionic eigenvalues is given by the nodal hypersurface integrals normalized by overlaps with the bosonic ground state of the given Hamiltonian. Noninteracting and fully interacting Be atom with corresponding almost exact and approximate wave functions are used to illustrate several aspects of these concepts. Variational formulations that employ different weights are proposed for prospective improvement of nodes in variational and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo calculations.

Thermal nature of confining strings

We investigate the quantum statistical properties of the confining string connecting a static fermion-antifermion pair in the massive Schwinger model. By analyzing the reduced density matrix of the subsystem located in between the fermion and antifermion, we demonstrate that as the interfermion separation approaches the string-breaking distance, the overlap between the microscopic density matrix and an effective thermal density matrix exhibits a pronounced, narrow peak, approaching unity at the onset of string breaking. This behavior reveals that the confining flux tube evolves toward a genuinely thermal state as the separation between the charges grows, even in the absence of an external heat bath. In other words, one cannot tell whether a reduced state of the subsystem arises from a surrounding heat bath or from entanglement with the rest of the system. The entanglement spectrum near the critical string-breaking distance exhibits a rapid transition from the dominance of a single state describing the confining electric string towards a strongly entangled state containing virtual fermion-antifermion pairs. Our findings establish a quantitative link between confinement, entanglement, and emergent thermality, and suggest that string breaking corresponds to a microscopic thermalization transition within the flux tube.

Heat generation due to the Anderson catastrophe in mesoscopic devices

Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe (AOC) theorem establishes that the ground state of the many-body fermion system is asymptotically orthogonal to the ground state of the same system perturbed by a scattering potential so that the overlap between the original and new ground states decays to zero with the system size. We adopt the AOC for a description of heat production in a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor transistor. We find that the heat released in the transistor comprises two distinct components, contribution from the dissipation accompanying electron transmission under the applied voltage and purely quantum-mechanical AOC part due to the change in scattering matrix for electrons upon switching between high and low conductance regimes. We calculate the AOC-induced heat production, which we call switching heat.
