Charm physics with overlap fermions on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations*

Decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons D, D s , η c , and vector mesons D*, D$^{*}_{s}$, J/ψ are determined from the N f = 2 + 1 lattice QCD at a lattice spacing a ~ 0.08 fm. For vector mesons, the decay constants defined by tensor currents are given in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 2 GeV. The calculation is performed on domain wall fermion configurations generated by the RBC-UKQCD collaborations and the overlap fermion action is used for the valence quarks. Comparing the current results with our previous results at a coarser lattice spacing a ~ 0.11 fm provides a better understanding of the discretization error. We obtain $f$$^{T}_{D^*_s}$($\overline{MS}$, 2 GeV)/f D$^{*}_{s}$ = 0.909(18) with a better precision than our previous result. Combining our f D$^{*}_{s}$ = 277(11) MeV with the total width of D$^{*}_{s}$ determined in a recent study gives a branching fraction 4.26(52) x 10 –5 for D$^{*}_{s}$ leptonic decay.

𝐹 𝐾 ⁡/𝐹 𝜋 from Möbius domain-wall fermions solved on gradient-flowed HISQ ensembles

We report the results of a lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation of 𝐹 𝐾 ⁡/𝐹 𝜋 using Möbius domain-wall fermions computed on gradient-flowed 𝑁 𝑓 =2 +1 +1 highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles. The calculation is performed with five values of the pion mass ranging from 130 ≲ 𝑚 𝜋 ≲ 400 MeV , four lattice spacings of 𝑎 ∼ 0.15, 0.12, 0.09 and 0.06 fm and multiple values of the lattice volume. The interpolation/extrapolation to the physical pion and kaon mass point, the continuum, and infinite volume limits are performed with a variety of different extrapolation functions utilizing both the relevant mixed-action effective field theory expressions as well as discretization-enhanced continuum chiral perturbation theory formulas. We find that the 𝑎 ∼ 0.06 fm ensemble is helpful, but not necessary to achieve a subpercent determination of 𝐹 𝐾 ⁡/𝐹 𝜋 . We also include an estimate of the strong isospin breaking corrections and arrive at a final result of 𝐹 $\hat{K}$ + ⁡ /𝐹 $\hat{𝜋}$ + = 1.1942⁢(45) with all sources of statistical and systematic uncertainty included. This is consistent with the Flavour Lattice Averaging Group average value, providing an important benchmark for our lattice action. Combining our result with experimental measurements of the pion and kaon leptonic decays leads to a determination of |𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑠 |/|𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 | = 0.2311⁢(10).

Lattice QCD calculation of the pion distribution amplitude with domain wall fermions at physical pion mass

We present a direct lattice QCD calculation of the x-dependence of the pion distribution amplitude (DA), which is performed using the quasi-DA in large momentum effective theory on a domain-wall fermion ensemble at physical quark masses and spacing a ≈ 0.084 fm. The bare quais-DA matrix elements are renormalized in the hybrid scheme and matched to $\overline{MS}$ with a subtraction of the leading renormalon in the Wilson-line mass. For the first time, we include threshold resummation in the perturbative matching onto the light-cone DA, which resums the large logarithms in the soft gluon limit at next-to-next-to-leading log. The resummed results show controlled scale-variation uncertainty within the range of momentum fraction x ϵ [0.25, 0.75] at the largest pion momentum P z ≈ 1.85 GeV. In addition, we apply the same analysis to quasi-DAs from a highly-improved-staggered-quark ensemble at physical pion mass and a = 0.076 fm. By comparison we find with 2σ confidence level that the DA obtained from chiral fermions is flatter and lower near x = 0.5.

Scale setting the Möbius domain wall fermion on gradient-flowed HISQ action using the omega baryon mass and the gradient-flow scales 𝑡 0 and 𝑤 0

We report on a subpercent scale determination using the omega baryon mass and gradient-flow methods. The calculations are performed on 22 ensembles of 𝑁 𝑓 =2 +1 +1 highly improved, rooted staggered sea-quark configurations generated by the MILC and CalLat Collaborations. The valence quark action used is Möbius domain wall fermions solved on these configurations after a gradient-flow smearing is applied with a flowtime of 𝑡 gf = 1 in lattice units. The ensembles span four lattice spacings in the range 0.06 ≲ 𝑎 ≲0.15 fm, six pion masses in the range 130 ≲ 𝑚 𝜋 ≲ 400 MeV and multiple lattice volumes. On each ensemble, the gradient-flow scales 𝑡 0 /𝑎 2 and 𝑤 0 /𝑎 and the omega baryon mass 𝑎⁢𝑚 Ω are computed. The dimensionless product of these quantities is then extrapolated to the continuum and infinite volume limits and interpolated to the physical light, strange and charm quark mass point in the isospin limit, resulting in the determination of $\sqrt{t}_0$ = 0.1422⁢(14) fm and 𝑤 0 = 0.1709⁢(11) fm with all sources of statistical and systematic uncertainty accounted for. The dominant uncertainty in both results is the stochastic uncertainty, though for $\sqrt{t}_0$ there are comparable continuum extrapolation uncertainties. For 𝑤 0 , there is a clear path for a few-per-mille uncertainty just through improved stochastic precision, as recently obtained by the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal Collaboration.

Transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions for longitudinally polarized nucleons from domain wall fermion calculations at the physical pion mass

Previous Lattice QCD calculations of nucleon transverse momentum-dependent parton distribu?tions (TMDs) focused on the case of transversely polarized nucleons, and thus did not encompass two leading-twist TMDs associated with longitudinal polarization, namely, the helicity TMD and the worm-gear TMD corresponding to transversely polarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon. Based on a definition of TMDs via hadronic matrix elements of quark bilocal operators containing staple-shaped gauge connections, TMD observables characterizing the aforementioned two TMDs are evaluated, utilizing an RBC/UKQCD domain wall fermion ensemble at the physical pion mass.

Chiral edge states on spheres for lattice domain wall fermions

Recently Weyl edge states on manifolds in dimension 𝑑 +1 with a connected 𝑑-dimensional boundary were proposed as candidates for lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories, for even 𝑑. The examples considered to date include solid cylinders in any odd dimension, and the 3 ball with boundary 𝑆 2 . Here we consider the general case of a (𝑑+1)-dimensional ball for any even 𝑑 and show that the theory for the edge states on 𝑆 𝑑 describe a conventional Weyl fermion on a sphere with half-integer momenta. A possible advantage of such theories is that they can be discretized by a square lattice without breaking the underlying discrete hypercubic symmetry.

Trace anomaly form factors from lattice QCD

The hadron mass can be obtained through the calculation of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in the hadron which includes the trace anomaly and sigma terms. The anomaly due to conformal symmetry breaking is believed to be an important ingredient for hadron mass generation and confinement. In this work, we will present the calculation of the glue part of the trace anomaly form factors of the pion up to Q 2 ∼ 4.3 GeV 2 and the nucleon up to Q 2 ∼ 1 GeV 2 . The calculations are performed on a domain wall fermion ensemble with overlap valence quarks at seven valence pion masses varying from ∼ 250 to ∼ 540 MeV , including the unitary point ∼ 340 MeV . We calculate the radius of the glue trace anomaly for the pion and the nucleon from the z expansion. By performing a two-dimensional Fourier transform on the glue trace anomaly form factors in the infinite momentum frame with no energy transfer, we also obtain their spatial distributions for several valence quark masses. The results are qualitatively extrapolated to the physical valence pion mass with systematic errors from the unphysical sea quark mass, discretization effects in the renormalization sum rule, and finite-volume effects to be addressed in the future. We find the pion’s form factor changes sign, as does its spatial distribution, for light quark masses. This explains how the trace anomaly contribution to the pion mass approaches zero toward the chiral limit. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Exact chiral symmetry with quantum signal processing

We give a quantum signal processing (QSP) algorithm for the overlap fermion Hamiltonian which preserves the Ginsparg-Wilson relation up to a controllable error $ε_e$. Quantum simulations of Dirac fermions with exact chiral symmetry are thus nearly free: applying the overlap Hamiltonian costs only a factor logarithmic in $ε_e$ more than the Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian. Comparing to domain-wall fermions, a mild overhead is found in circuit complexity while reducing qubit costs. We show how QSP effectively constructs an extra dimension when simulating the overlap operator, illustrating that the scaling of quantum algorithms reflects the deeper physics of overlap fermions arising at the boundary of domain-wall fermions.

Extracting $B_s\to D_s^*\ellν_\ell$ form factors

Semileptonic $B_{(s)}$ decays are of great phenomenological interest because they allow to determine e.g. CKM matrix elements or test lepton flavor universality. Taking advantage of already existing lattice data, we demonstrate the analysis steps to extract the four form factors describing exclusive semileptonic $B_s\to D_s^*\ellν_\ell$ decays using the narrow width approximation. Our data are based on RBC/UKQCD's set of 2+1 flavor gauge field ensembles with Shamir domain-wall fermion and Iwasaki gauge field action featuring inverse lattice spacings of $a^{-1}=$1.785, 2.383, and 2.785 GeV as well as pion masses between 268 and 433 MeV. Light, strange and charm quarks are simulated using domain-wall fermions, whereas bottom quarks are generated with the relativistic heavy quark (RHQ) action.

Kaon mixing beyond the standard model with physical masses

We present nonperturbative results for beyond the standard model kaon mixing matrix elements in the isospin symmetric limit ( m u = m d ) of QCD, including a complete estimate of all dominant sources of systematic error. Our results are obtained from numerical simulations of lattice QCD with N f = 2 + 1 flavors of dynamical domain wall fermions. For the first time, these quantities are simulated directly at the physical pion mass m π ∼ 139 MeV for two different lattice spacings. We include data at three lattice spacings in the range a = 0.11 – 0.07 fm and with pion masses ranging from the physical value up to 450 MeV. Compared to our earlier work, we have added both direct calculations at physical quark masses and a third lattice spacing making the removal of discretization effects significantly more precise and eliminating the need for any significant mass extrapolation beyond the range of simulated data. We renormalize the lattice operators nonperturbatively using RI-SMOM off-shell schemes. These schemes eliminate the need to model and subtract nonperturbative pion poles that arises in the RI-MOM scheme and, since the calculations are performed with domain wall fermions, the unphysical mixing between chirality sectors is suppressed. Our results for the bag parameters in the MS ¯ scheme at 3 GeV are B K ≡ B 1 = 0.5240 ( 17 ) ( 54 ) , B 2 = 0.4794 ( 25 ) ( 35 ) , B 3 = 0.746 ( 13 ) ( 17 ) , B 4 = 0.897 ( 02 ) ( 10 ) and B 5 = 0.6882 ( 78 ) ( 94 ) , where the first error is from lattice uncertainties and the second is the uncertainty due to the perturbative matching to MS ¯ . Lattice QCD Calculation of Electroweak Box Contributions to Superallowed Nuclear and Neutron Beta Decays

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the universal axial γ W -box contribution □ γ W V A to both superallowed nuclear and neutron beta decays. This contribution emerges as a significant component within the theoretical uncertainties surrounding the extraction of | V u d | from superallowed decays. Our calculation is conducted using two domain wall fermion ensembles at the physical pion mass. To construct the nucleon four-point correlation functions, we employ the random sparsening field technique. Furthermore, we incorporate long-distance contributions to the hadronic function using the infinite-volume reconstruction method. Upon performing the continuum extrapolation, we arrive at □ γ W V A = 3.65 ( 7 ) lat ( 1 ) PT × 10 − 3 . Consequently, this yields a slightly higher value of | V u d | = 0.973 86 ( 11 ) exp ( 9 ) RC ( 27 ) NS , reducing the previous 2.1 σ tension with the CKM unitarity to 1.8 σ . Additionally, we calculate the vector γ W -box contribution to the axial charge g A , denoted as □ γ W V V , and explore its potential implications. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Lattice calculation of short-range contributions to neutrinoless double-beta decay 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 at physical pion mass

Neutrinoless double-beta (0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽) decays provide an excellent probe for determining whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana fermions. The short-range matrix elements associated with the 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 process contribute at leading order in the 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 decay channel 𝑛⁢𝑛 → 𝑝⁢𝑝⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 through pion exchange between nucleons. However, current lattice calculations show notable discrepancies in predicting these short-range contributions. To address this issue, we perform a lattice QCD calculation of the 𝜋 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑒⁢𝑒 matrix elements using domain wall fermion ensembles at the physical pion mass generated by the RBC/UKQCD Collaboration. To mitigate contamination from around-the-world effects, we develop a new method to reconstruct and subtract them directly from lattice data. We then perform nonperturbative renormalization in the regularization-independent symmetric momentum-subtraction scheme (RI/SMOM), using the (𝛾 𝜇 , 𝛾 𝜇 ) and ($\not{𝑞}$, $\not{𝑞}$) projectors. Compared with previous studies, this work reduces the uncertainties in the matrix elements and provides an independent cross-check that helps to reconcile the discrepancies among previous lattice calculations.

Isospin-breaking corrections to light-meson leptonic decays from lattice simulations at physical quark masses

The decreasing uncertainties in theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of several hadronic observables related to weak processes, which in many cases are now smaller than O(1%), require theoretical calculations to include subleading corrections that were neglected so far. Precise determinations of leptonic and semi-leptonic decay rates, including QED and strong isospin-breaking effects, can play a central role in solving the current tensions in the first-row unitarity of the CKM matrix. In this work we present the first RBC/UKQCD lattice calculation of the isospin-breaking corrections to the ratio of leptonic decay rates of kaons and pions into muons and neutrinos. The calculation is performed at fixed lattice spacing (a –1 ≃ 1.730 GeV) on a 48 3 × 96 volume with N f = 2 + 1 dynamical quarks close to the physical point and domain wall fermions in the Möbius formulation are employed. Long-distance QED interactions are included according to the QED L prescription and the crucial role of finite-volume electromagnetic corrections in the determination of leptonic decay rates, which produce a large systematic uncertainty, is extensively discussed. Finally, we study the different sources of uncertainty on |V us |/|V ud | and observe that, if finite-volume systematics can be reduced, the error from isospin-breaking corrections is potentially sub-dominant in the final precision of the ratio of the CKM matrix elements.

Charmed and ϕ meson decay constants from 2+1-flavor lattice QCD *

Abstract On a lattice with 2+1-flavor dynamical domain-wall fermions at the physical pion mass, we calculate the decay constants of , , and . The lattice size is , which corresponds to a spatial extension of fm, with a lattice spacing of fm. For the valence light, strange, and charm quarks, we use overlap fermions at several mass points close to their physical values. Our results at the physical point are MeV, MeV, MeV, MeV, and MeV. The couplings of and to the tensor current ( ) can be derived from ratios and , respectively, which are the first lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) results. We also obtain ratios and , which reflect the size of heavy quark symmetry breaking in charmed mesons. Ratios and can be taken as a measure of SU (3) flavor symmetry breaking.
