Neutron Electric Dipole Moments with Clover Fermions

We present preliminary results for the contributions to the neutron EDM arising from the QCD θ-term, the Weinberg three-gluon and the quark chromo-EDM operators from our ongoing lattice calculations using clover valence quarks on the MILC HISQ lattices. We use the gradient-flow technique to smooth the lattices and renormalize the gluonic operators, and use the Schwinger source method to incorporate the quark chromo-EDM interactions in the quark propagator. For the QCD θ-term and the Weinberg three-gluon operator, we report results in the gradient-flow scheme from 8 ensembles at four lattice spacings and three pion masses, including 2 physical pion mass ensembles. For the quark chromo-EDM, unrenormalized results are presented at two lattice spacings, a=0.12 and 0.09 fm, and two pion masses, M π =310 MeV and 220 MeV.

Flavor diagonal nucleon charges using clover fermions on MILC HISQ ensembles

We present lattice results for the flavor diagonal charges of the proton from the analysis of eight ensembles generated using 2+1+1-flavors of highly improved staggered quarks by the MILC Collaboration. The calculation includes all the needed connected and disconnected contributions to nucleon three-point function. For extracting matrix elements using fits to the spectral decomposition of these correlation functions, two strategies to remove excited state contributions are employed and compared. To renormalize these charges, the 2+1-flavor mixing matrix is calculated in the regularization independent symmetric momentum subtraction intermediate scheme on the lattice. The final results are presented in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at scale 2 GeV. The axial charges for the proton are $𝑔$$^{𝑢}_{𝐴}$ = 0.781⁢(25), $𝑔$$^{𝑑}_{𝐴}$ =−0.440⁢(39), and $𝑔$$^{𝑠}_{𝐴}$ = −0.055⁢(9); the tensor charges are $𝑔$$^{𝑢}_{𝑇}$ = 0.782⁢(28), $𝑔$$^{𝑑}_{𝑇}$ = −0.195⁢(16), and $𝑔$$^{𝑠}_{𝑇}$ = −0.0016⁢(12); and the scalar charges are $𝑔$$^{𝑢}_{𝑆}$ = 9.39⁢(88), $𝑔$$^{𝑑}_{𝑆}$ = 8.84⁢(93), and $𝑔$$^{𝑠}_{𝑆}$ = 0.37⁢(14). Results for the neutron are given by the 𝑢 ↔ 𝑑 interchange. Results for the sigma terms are 𝜎 𝜋⁢𝑁 | standard = 42⁢(6) MeV from a “standard” analysis and 𝜎 𝜋⁢𝑁 | 𝑁⁢𝜋 = 61⁢(6) MeV from an “𝑁⁢𝜋” analysis that includes the contributions of multihadron 𝑁⁢𝜋 excited states as motivated by chiral perturbation theory. Our preferred value 𝜎 𝜋⁢𝑁 | 𝑁⁢𝜋 is consistent with the phenomenological extraction from 𝜋 −𝑁 scattering data. The strangeness content of the proton, for which the standard analysis is appropriate, is 𝜎 𝑠 | standard = 35⁢(13) MeV.

$\mathrm{O}(a)$ improvement of the flavour singlet scalar density in a setup with Wilson fermions

We report on our Ward identity determination of the O(a) improvement coefficient for the flavour singlet scalar density, namely gS , from three-flavour lattice QCD with Wilson-clover fermions and the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action. We employ five couplings, g20∈[1.5,1.77] , that cover the range used in large-volume CLS simulations. While gS itself is for instance relevant for the O(a) improvement of meson and baryon sigma terms, a relation to bg , the O(a) improvement parameter of the gauge coupling, can also be established, allowing for its non-perturbative extraction as well. With Wilson fermions, bg is in principle required for full O(a) improvement at non-vanishing sea quark masses. We outline our procedure for extracting bg

Determination of the Collins-Soper Kernel from Lattice QCD

We present lattice results for the non-perturbative Collins-Soper (CS) kernel, which describes the energy-dependence of transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs). The CS kernel is extracted from the ratios of first Mellin moments of quasi-TMDs evaluated at different nucleon momenta. The analysis is done with dynamical N f = 2 + 1 clover fermions for the CLS ensemble H101 (a = 0. 0854 fm, m π = m K = 422 MeV). The computed CS kernel is in good agreement with experimental extractions and previous lattice studies.

Gluon parton distribution of the pion from lattice QCD

We present the first determination of the x-dependent pion gluon distribution from lattice QCD using the pseudo-PDF approach. We use lattice ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by MILC Collaboration, at two lattice spacings a ≈ 0.12 and 0.15 fm and three pion masses M π ≈ 220, 310 and 690 MeV. We use clover fermions for the valence action and momentum smearing to achieve pion boost momentum up to 2.29 GeV. We find that the dependence of the pion gluon parton distribution on lattice spacing and pion mass is mild. We compare our results from the lightest pion mass ensemble with the determination by JAM and xFitter global fits.

Third moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from physical-point lattice QCD

Using forward matrix elements of local leading-twist operators, we present a determination of the isovector third Mellin moments ⟨𝑥 2 ⟩ of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used, which were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2+1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. Leveraging a wide set of operators, two extraction methods for the matrix elements, and the automatic inclusion of model uncertainties via bootstrapped model averages, we extract values of the third Mellin moments. Furthermore, this is the first direct calculation of these observables performed at the physical pion mass.

Nonperturbatively renormalized nucleon gluon momentum fraction in the continuum limit of N f = 2 + 1 + 1 lattice QCD

We present the nonperturbatively renormalized nucleon gluon momentum fraction using ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by the MILC Collaboration. The calculation is done using clover fermions for the valence action with three pion masses, 220, 310, and 690 MeV, and three lattice spacings, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm. The renormalization is done using RI/MOM nonperturbative renormalization and using cluster-decomposition error reduction (CDER) to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the renormalization constant. We find the CDER technique is particularly important to improve the signal at the finer lattice ensembles where the lattice volume is larger. We extrapolate the gluon momentum fraction to the continuum-physical limit and obtain $\langle{x}\rangle$ g = 0.502⁢(53) stat+NPR ⁢(50) mixing in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 2 GeV, where first error includes the statistical error and uncertainties in nonperturbative renormalization, while the latter systematic error accounts for ignoring quark mixing. Our gluon momentum fraction is consistent with other recent lattice-QCD results at physical pion mass.

Nucleon isovector axial form factors

We present results for the isovector axial vector form factors obtained using thirteen 2 + 1 + 1 -flavor highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. The calculation of nucleon two- and three-point correlation functions has been done using Wilson-clover fermions. In the analysis of these data, we quantify the sensitivity of the results to strategies used for removing excited state contamination and invoke the partially conserved axial current relation between the form factors to choose between them. Our data driven analysis includes removing contributions from multihadron N π states that make significant contributions. Our final results are g A = 1.292 ( 53 ) stat ( 24 ) sys for the axial charge; g S = 1.085 ( 50 ) stat ( 103 ) sys and g T = 0.991 ( 21 ) stat ( 10 ) sys for the scalar and tensor charges; ⟨ r A 2 ⟩ = 0.439 ( 56 ) stat ( 34 ) sys fm 2 for the mean squared axial charge radius, g P * = 9.03 ( 47 ) stat ( 42 ) sys for the induced pseudoscalar charge; and g π N N = 14.14 ( 81 ) stat ( 85 ) sys for the pion-nucleon coupling. We also provide a parametrization of the axial form factor G A ( Q 2 ) over the range 0 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 1 GeV 2 for use in phenomenology and a comparison with other lattice determinations. We find that the various lattice data agree within 10% but are significantly different from the extraction of G A ( Q 2 ) from the ν -deuterium scattering data. Moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from lattice QCD at the physical point

The second Mellin moments ⟨ x ⟩ of the nucleon’s unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions are computed. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used: these were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2 + 1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. The moments are extracted from forward matrix elements of local leading twist operators. We determine renomalization factors in RI-(S)MOM and match to MS ¯ at scale 2 GeV. Our findings show that operators that exhibit vanishing kinematics at zero momentum can have significantly reduced excited-state contamination. The resulting polarized moment is used to quantify the longitudinal contribution to the quark spin-orbit correlation. All our results agree within two sigma with previous lattice results. Gluon moment and parton distribution function of the pion from 𝑁 𝑓 = 2 +1 +1 lattice QCD

We present the first calculation of the pion gluon moment from lattice QCD in the continuum-physical limit. The calculation is done using clover fermions for the valence action with three pion masses, 220, 310 and 690 MeV, and three lattice spacings, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm, using ensembles generated by MILC Collaboration with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ). On the lattice, we nonperturbatively renormalize the gluon operator in RI/MOM scheme using the cluster-decomposition error reduction (CDER) technique to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the renormalization constant. We extrapolate the pion gluon moment to the continuum-physical limit and obtain ⟨𝑥⟩ 𝑔 = 0.394⁢(58) stat+NPR ⁢(39) mixing in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 2 GeV, with first error being the statistical error and uncertainties in nonperturbative renormalization, and the second being a systematic uncertainty estimating the effect of ignoring quark mixing. Our pion gluon momentum fraction has a central value lower than two recent single-ensemble lattice-QCD results near physical pion mass but is consistent with the recent global fits by JAM and xFitter and with most QCD-model estimates.

Unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions of the nucleon from lattice QCD

We present a first lattice QCD calculation of the unpolarized nucleon’s isovector transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs), which are essential to predict observables of multiscale, semi-inclusive processes in the standard model. We use a N f = 2 + 1 + 1 MILC ensemble with valence clover fermions on a highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) sea to compute the quark momentum distributions in a large-momentum nucleon on the lattice. The state-of-the-art techniques in renormalization and extrapolation in the correlation distance on the lattice are adopted. The perturbative kernel up to next-to-next-to-leading order is taken into account, and the dependence on the pion mass and the hadron momentum is explored. Our results are qualitatively comparable with phenomenological TMDPDFs, which provide an opportunity to predict high energy scatterings from first principles. Nucleon valence quark distribution functions from Lattice QCD

We present results on the nucleon valence quark distribution extracted from Lattice QCD simulations, using a gauge ensemble of Nf=2+1 Wilson-Clover fermions with a pion mass of m?=350 MeV and lattice spacing of a=0.091 fm. We obtain reduced Ioffe Time Distributions (rITDs) by computing appropriate matrix elements on the lattice, and elaborate on the extraction of the desired quark distributions from the rITDs following the pseudo-PDF approach. A set of techniques are considered in order to ensure ground state dominance. Theoretical and experimental implications of our calculation are discussed.

Update on flavor diagonal nucleon charges

This talk provides an update on the calculation of matrix elements of flavor diagonal axial, scalar and tensor quark bilinear operators between the nucleon ground state. The simulations are done using Wilson-clover fermions on a sea of eight 2+1+1-flavor HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. We discuss the signal in the sum of the connected and disconnected contributions for the up, down and strange quarks, control over fits to remove excited state contamination, and the simultaneous chiral-continuum fit used to extract the charges.

Three-dimensional imaging of pion using lattice QCD: generalized parton distributions

In this work, we report a lattice calculation of x-dependent valence pion generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness with multiple values of the momentum transfer −t. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 gauge ensemble of highly improved staggered quarks with Wilson-Clover valence fermion. The lattice spacing is 0.04 fm, and the pion valence mass is tuned to be 300 MeV. We determine the Lorentz-invariant amplitudes of the quasi-GPD matrix elements for both symmetric and asymmetric momenta transfers with similar values and show the equivalence of both frames. Then, focusing on the asymmetric frame, we utilize a hybrid scheme to renormalize the quasi-GPD matrix elements obtained from the lattice calculations. After the Fourier transforms, the quasi-GPDs are then matched to the light-cone GPDs within the framework of large momentum effective theory with improved matching, including the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative corrections, and leading renormalon and renormalization group resummations. We also present the 3-dimensional image of the pion in impact-parameter space through the Fourier transform of the momentum transfer −t.

Kaon gluon parton distribution and momentum fraction from 2+1+1 lattice QCD with high statistics

We present a high-statistics lattice-QCD determination of the kaon gluon parton distribution function and gluon momentum fraction. We use clover valence fermion action to take 1,296,640 kaon-correlator measurements on a highly improved staggered quark ensemble with 𝑎 ≈ 0.12 fm and 310-MeV pion mass generated by the MILC Collaboration. A detailed investigation into the impact of gauge-link smearing on the gluonic matrix elements indicates that five steps of hypercubic smearing offer an effective balance between signal quality and preservation of long-distance physics. We report a nonperturbatively renormalized kaon gluon momentum fraction of Math output error at 𝜇 = 2 GeV in the Math output error scheme. Using reduced pseudo-Ioffe-time-distribution matrix elements and pseudo-parton-distribution-function (PDF) matching, we extract the kaon gluon PDF and compare with the prediction from the Dyson-Schwinger equation and with the pion PDF obtained from the same ensemble.
