Atomic electron correlation in nuclear electron capture

The effect of electron-electron Coulomb correlation on orbital electron capture by the nucleus was treated by the multiconfigurational Hartree-Fock approach. The theoretical Be-7 L/K capture ratio was found to be 0.086, and the Ar-37 M/L ratio, 0.102. Both ratios were smaller than the independent particle predictions. Measurements exist for the Ar M/L ratio, and agreement between theory and experiment was excellent.

The utilization of abelian point group symmetry in the graphical unitary group approach to the calculation of correlated electronic wavefunctions

A procedure is described for the utilization of abelian point group symmetry in the graphical unitary group approach (GUGA) to calculations of correlated electronic wavefunctions. The procedure is based on a recursively computed set of symmetry dependent counting indices, and results in the separate numbering, without gaps, of the Gelfand states (configuration functions) belonging to each symmetry species

Electron parameter correlations in high-speed streams and heat flux instabilities

Statistical electron parameter correlations associated with high-speed streams are determined with the aim of identifying one or more locally active solar wind heat flux instabilities. Evidence that points toward local regulation of the heat flux at 1 AU is presented, and the results of a search for special signatures expected from the action of the Alfven, magnetosonic, and whistler flux instabilities are discussed. It is shown that under certain conditions, the whistler mode can be active in regulating the heat flux at 1 AU.

Jovian electron bursts - Correlation with the interplanetary field direction and hydromagnetic waves

The bursts of relativistic electrons detected on Pioneer 10 upstream from Jupiter and within 400 Jovian radii of the planet have been found to be correlated with the interplanetary magnetic field. In three examples, electrons with energies between 3 and 6 MeV escaping from Jupiter's magnetosphere were observed only when the interplanetary magnetic field was along the Jupiter-spacecraft line. Large-amplitude interplanetary waves with characteristic periods of 10 min were found to be well correlated with intervals during which the field was along the Jupiter-spacecraft line. Abrupt changes in the field away from the preferred direction caused equally abrupt terminations of the waves with an accompanying reduction in the electron flux. These results are consistent with propagation of the electrons from Jupiter to Pioneer along the magnetic field lines. Hydromagnetic wave generation by Jovian charged particles, presumably the relativistic electrons themselves, as they travel upstream, appears to be an attractive explanation for the origin of the waves. At the observed frequency, hydromagnetic waves are Doppler-shifted to the gyrofrequency of the relativistic electrons. A plasma instability that appears capable of explaining the observations is a cyclotron overstability that occurs when the velocity of runaway electrons exceeds the velocity of hydromagnetic waves.

Feasibility study consisting of a review of contour generation methods from stereograms

A review of techniques for obtaining contour information from stereo pairs is given. Photogrammetric principles including a description of stereoscopic vision are presented. The use of conventional contour generation methods, such as the photogrammetric plotting technique, electronic correlator, and digital correlator are described. Coherent optical techniques for contour generation are discussed and compared to the electronic correlator. The optical techniques are divided into two categories: (1) image plane operation and (2) frequency plane operation. The description of image plane correlators are further divided into three categories: (1) image to image correlator, (2) interferometric correlator, and (3) positive negative transparencies. The frequency plane correlators are divided into two categories: (1) correlation of Fourier transforms, and (2) filtering techniques.

Reducing streak film data via electronic cross correlator

Continuous /nonframing/ motion picture projector, two photocells, a cross-correlator, and a ground glass screen where the photocells intercept the stream image determine the time delay between successive streak images. Velocities corresponding to the streaks are determined from the delay together with the distance separating the photocells.
