Method and system for measurement of impedance of electrochemical devices

The present disclosure provides methods for determining impedance of an electrochemical device by electrically connecting a variable impedance in parallel with the electrochemical device; electrically connecting a power supply to the electrochemical device, the power supply generating a power supply current; modulating a current through the variable impedance; measuring a stack current flowing through the electrochemical device; measuring, at the electrochemical device, a voltage across at least a portion of the electrochemical device; and calculating, based on the measured stack current and the measured voltage, the impedance of the electrochemical device. Systems for performing such methods are also provided.

Electrochemical device comprising thin porous metal sheet

Electrochemical device using thin micro-porous metal sheets. The porous metal sheet may have a thickness less than 200 μm, provides three-dimensional networked pore structures of pore sizes in the range of 2.0 nm to 5.0 μm, and is electrically conductive. The micro-porous metal sheet is used for positively and/or negatively-charged electrodes by providing large specific contact surface area of reactants/electron. Nano-sized catalyst or features can be added inside pores of the porous metal sheet of pore sizes at sub- and micrometer scale to enhance the reaction activity and capacity. Micro-porous ceramic materials may be coated on the porous metal sheet at a thickness of less than 40 μm to enhance the functionality of the porous metal sheet and may function as a membrane separator. The electrochemical device may be used for decomposing molecules and for synthesis of molecules such as synthesis of ammonia from water and nitrogen molecules.

Broadband THz Modulation via Solid–State Organic Electrochemical Devices

The sub-Terahertz and Terahertz bands play a critical role in next-generation wireless communication and sensing technologies, thanks to the large amount of available bandwidth in this spectral regime. While long-wavelength (microwave to mm-Wave) and short-wavelength (near-infrared to ultraviolet) devices are well-established and studied, the sub-THz to THz regime remains relatively underexplored and underutilized. Traditional approaches used in the aforementioned spectral regions are more difficult to replicate in the THz band, leading to the need for the development of novel devices and structures that can manipulate THz radiation effectively. Herein a novel organic, solid-state electrochemical device is presented, capable of achieving modulation depths of over 90% from ≈500 nm of a conducting polymer that switches conductivity over a large dynamic range upon application of an electronically controllable external bias. The stability of such devices under long-term, repeated voltage switching, as well as continuous biasing at a single voltage, is also explored. Switching stabilities and long-term bias stabilities are achieved over two days for both use cases. Additionally, both depletion mode (always “ON”) and accumulation mode (always “OFF”) operation are demonstrated. These results suggest applications of organic electrochemical THz modulators in large area and flexible implementations.

Surface electron modulation of metal oxide‐based electrochemical devices by surface additives—linking sensors and fuel cells

Abstract The interaction between ambient oxygen and the metal oxide surface is central to various electrochemical devices. Solid oxide fuel cell cathodes and semiconducting metal oxide gas sensors are two prominent examples. Parallels between these two systems are highlighted in this perspective. In both cases, the presence of foreign surface species has been found to significantly alter the interactions of the metal oxides’ surfaces with oxygen. On the one hand, interactions are hindered due to the presence of certain impurities, such as the degradation of fuel cell cathode by Si‐species that originate from processing or from operating environments. On the other hand, electrochemically active noble metal additives have been intentionally used to tune the sensor response of metal oxides. In the case of electrochemically active additives, the need for operando spectroscopies to elucidate the mechanism is discussed. Electronic coupling of the surface additive with the metal oxide is found to play a central role in both cases. We use these results to demonstrate that insights gained from either field can be effectively applied to the other.

Development of Roll-to-Roll Simultaneous Multilayer Deposition Methods for Solid-state Electrochemical Devices using Highly Particulate Loaded Aqueous Inks

A platform for simultaneous multilayer roll-to-roll coating was developed for solid-state electrochemical devices through Saint-Gobain’s Solid Oxide Fuel Cell. Six wet layers were successfully coated one top of another using multilayer slide coating following design rules developed through a step-wise approach. Solid oxide fuel cells, which comprise of engineered ceramic films, were made with dual slot and multi-layer slide dies and shown to have similar performance to cells made with incumbent coating methods. Additionally, interlayers were coated below their individual singular low flow limits using simultaneous multilayer coating.

Triple ionic–electronic conducting oxides for next-generation electrochemical devices

Triple ionic–electronic conductors (TIECs) are materials that can simultaneously transport electronic species alongside two ionic species. The recent emergence of TIECs provides intriguing opportunities to maximize performance in a variety of electrochemical devices, including fuel cells, membrane reactors and electrolysis cells. However, the potential application of these nascent materials is limited by lack of fundamental knowledge of their transport properties and electrocatalytic activity. The goal of this Review is to summarize and analyse the current understanding of TIEC transport and electrochemistry in single-phase materials, including defect formation and conduction mechanisms. In this work, we particularly focus on the discovery criteria (for example, crystal structure and ion electronegativity), design principles (for example, cation and anion substitution chemistry) and operating conditions (for example, atmosphere) of materials that enable deliberate tuning of the conductivity of each charge carrier. Lastly, we identify important areas for further advances, including higher chemical stability, lower operating temperatures and discovery of n-type TIEC materials.
