Medium- and Heavy-Duty Truck Duty Cycles

This dataset provides second-by-second duty cycle data for Class 6 and Class 8 diesel trucks in Texas, including key vehicle metrics, engine-related data, and GPS data (excluding GPS latitude and longitude to ensure confidentiality). The data were collected via tablets installed on the trucks and organized into daily datasets, each associated with a unique vehicle ID and date. There are 12 daily datasets for Class 6 diesel trucks (three unique vehicle IDs) and 43 daily datasets for Class 8 diesel trucks (six unique vehicle IDs). The units associated with each column are included in the name. The engine performance data include columns such as engine speed, engine percent torque, and engine fuel rate. Road grade (%/100) was estimated using the GPS altitude and wheel-based vehicle speed, which is used as an input for FASTSim. Cumulative distance was also calculated using the wheel-based vehicle speed. Additional columns include: - Engine Speed (RPM): Removed inaccurate readings and used to calculate angular velocity (radians/second). - Torque (N·m): Calculated using engine percent torque, nominal friction percent torque, and engine reference torque values (those columns were removed from dataset), then normalized to express as torque (%). - Flywheel Power (%): Calculated using the angular velocity and torque (in kW), then normalized as a percentage of the maximum value. - Engine Fuel Rate (%) and Torque (%): Both metrics were normalized by dividing by their respective maximum values within each dataset to express them as percentages. The datasets were analyzed to assess the energy impact of various driving behaviors, simulate energy efficiency, and recommend optimal routes for diesel trucks using NLR’s tool called RouteE. For driver coaching, factors like speed and acceleration limits were considered, and idle periods were reduced (assuming the engine was off during idling) to adjust each drive cycle. These adjusted drive cycles were then simulated in FASTSim to evaluate their effect on fleet energy consumption and estimate potential energy savings. The original cycles are available for download on this page ![image](CoVaR_Image_for_Data_Page_Kenworth_Truck.jpg)

CRADA Final Report: Ultralong Cycle Life and Ultrafast Charging Batteries to Electrify High Duty-Cycle, Mobile Platforms

As part of the Cyclotron Road program, Tyfast Energy Corp. aimed to investigate the Li 3 V 2 O 5 (LVO) anode material for next generation lithium batteries. State of the art and fast charging lithium-ion batteries are based on the lithium titanate or Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) anode chemistry. LTO cells demonstrate fast charging times (<6 mins), long cycle life (>20,000 cycles), but at the expense of very low energy density (<200Wh/L, <80Wh/kg). Silicon anodes have the promise of achieving fast charging times, however, issues with cycling stability in combination with fast charging is unknown. LVO has unique properties that enable new performance window for lithium batteries. First, LVO operates at an average potential of 0.6V vs. Li/Li + , well above the Li-metal plating region allowing ultrafast charge capability without sacrificing safety. Second, the LVO has a high specific capacity of 250 mAh/g making battery pack energy density equivalent with current high-energy Li-ion chemistries.

EV Shuttle Bus Pilot

The EV Shuttle Bus Pilot dataset contains data and analysis from Hocking-Athens-Perry Community Action's demonstration of an electric bus on routes of their rural Athens Public Transit system. The vehicle used in the demonstration was a Ford E-450 cutaway equipped with an electric drivetrain, a 127-kWh battery system by Motiv Power Systems, and a cabin upfit by Turtle Top. Data gathered include route assignments, running time and distance, fuel economy, and charge cycles. A comparison of the vehicle's observed duty cycle with duty cycle modeling from other rural transit fleets in the National Transit Database is included to help better understand the rural adoption potential for this fleet technology.

The influence of laser power modulation on melt pool dynamics in laser powder bed fusion

While the majority of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) metal additive manufacturing uses a continuous wave (CW) laser heat source, some commercial applications of LPBF additive manufacturing instead involve the modulation of the laser power on tens-of-microsecond timescales as an adjustable process variable. This article reports the use of in situ, high speed x-ray and optical imaging to probe melt pool fluid flow, defect formation, and nearby powder motion during LPBF with both modulated and CW laser heat sources. We observe melt pool dynamics unique to modulated laser melting even at very high duty cycles that are related to fluctuations in vapor depression depth, complex pore formation mechanisms, and changes to denudation physics when compared to CW melting. These behaviors are present in Ti–6Al–4V, 316L stainless steel, and AL1100 alloys but vary slightly as a function of material, indicating a substantial dependence on the viscosity and surface tension of the liquid metal. While high duty cycles produce weld tracks of comparable quality to CW melting, lower duty cycles introduce substantial defect concentrations. At intermediate duty cycles, careful control of modulation parameters can repeatably and precisely yield one pore per laser pulse, suggesting a method for intentionally inserting engineered porosity at specific sites during an LPBF build.

Electrochemically modulated single-molecule localization microscopy for in vitro imaging cytoskeletal protein structures

A new concept of electrochemically modulated single-molecule localization super-resolution imaging is developed. Applications of single-molecule localization super-resolution microscopy have been limited due to insufficient availability of qualified fluorophores with favorable low duty cycles. The key for the new concept is that the “On” state of a redox-active fluorophore with unfavorable high duty cycle could be driven to “Off” state by electrochemical potential modulation and thus become available for single-molecule localization imaging. The new concept was carried out using redox-active cresyl violet with unfavorable high duty cycle as a model fluorophore by synchronizing electrochemical potential scanning with a single-molecule localization microscope. The two cytoskeletal protein structures, the microtubules from porcine brain and the actins from rabbit muscle, were selected as the model target structures for the conceptual imaging in vitro. The super-resolution images of microtubules and actins were obtained from precise single-molecule localizations determined by modulating the On/Off states of single fluorophore molecules on the cytoskeletal proteins via electrochemical potential scanning. Importantly, this method could allow more fluorophores even with unfavorable photophysical properties to become available for a wider and more extensive application of single-molecule localization microscopy.
