Do Programmers Prefer Predictable Expressions in Code?

Source code is a form of human communication, albeit one where the information shared between the programmers reading and writing the code is constrained by the requirement that the code executes correctly. Programming languages are more syntactically constrained than natural languages, but they are also very expressive, allowing a great many different ways to express even very simple computations. Still, code written by developers is highly predictable, and many programming tools have taken advantage of this phenomenon, relying on language model surprisal as a guiding mechanism. Additionally, while surprisal has been validated as a measure of cognitive load in natural language, its relation to human cognitive processes in code is still poorly understood. In this paper, we explore the relationship between surprisal and programmer preference at a small granularity—do programmers prefer more predictable expressions in code? Using meaning-preserving transformations, we produce equivalent alternatives to developer-written code expressions and run a corpus study on Java and Python projects. In general, language models rate the code expressions developers choose to write as more predictable than these transformed alternatives. Then, we perform two human subject studies asking participants to choose between two equivalent snippets of Java code with different surprisal scores (one original and transformed). We find that programmers do prefer more predictable variants, and that stronger language models like the transformer align more often and more consistently with these preferences.

Optimizing Transportation Networks for E-Waste Reverse Logistics: A Multi-Modal Cost Allocation and Pricing Strategy

The exponential growth of electronic waste (e-waste) poses critical challenges for sustainable reverse logistics and transportation network optimization. This study develops a dual-channel transportation framework for e-waste logistics that integrates dynamic freight pricing, cost allocation mechanisms, and game-theoretic coordination. The model captures interactions between centralized hubs and distributed processing networks, accounting for freight rate elasticity, volume allocation, and capacity constraints. Using Stackelberg game theory and cost-sharing strategies, the framework optimizes transportation efficiency and profit distribution across logistics channels. Numerical simulations show that the dual-channel structure increases centralized hub profit by 226.8% compared to baseline single-channel operations, while boosting total transported volume by 1.2% and nearly doubling freight collector profit under cost-sharing. Scenario analyses across regional infrastructures reveal that network density, policy incentives, and logistics costs shape routing efficiency and profit allocation. These findings suggest that coordinated strategies combining dynamic pricing, targeted infrastructure investment, and strategic cost allocation are needed to design efficient, resilient, and regionally adaptable e-waste transportation systems.

Constrained Deep Reinforcement Learning for Energy Sustainable Multi-UAV Based Random Access IoT Networks With NOMA

In this paper, we apply the Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) technique to improve the massive channel access of a wireless IoT network where solar-powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) relay data from IoT devices to remote servers. Specifically, IoT devices contend for accessing the shared wireless channel using an adaptive p-persistent slotted Aloha protocol; and the solar-powered UAVs adopt Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) to decode multiple received data from IoT devices to improve access efficiency. To enable an energy-sustainable capacity-optimal network, we study the joint problem of dynamic multi-UAV altitude control and multi-cell wireless channel access management of IoT devices as a stochastic control problem with multiple energy constraints. We first formulate this problem as a Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP), and propose an online model-free Constrained Deep Reinforcement Learning (CDRL) algorithm based on Lagrangian primal-dual policy optimization to solve the CMDP. Extensive simulations demonstrate that our proposed algorithm learns a cooperative policy in which the altitude of UAVs and channel access probability of IoT devices are dynamically controlled to attain the maximal long-term network capacity while ensuring energy sustainability of UAVs, outperforming baseline schemes. The proposed CDRL agent can be trained on a small network, yet the learned policy can efficiently manage networks with a massive number of IoT devices and varying initial states, which can amortize the cost of training the CDRL agent.

Performance and Achievable Rates of the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill Code for Pure-Loss and Amplification Channels

Quantum error-correction codes protect information from realistic noisy channels and lie at the heart of quantum computation and communication tasks. Understanding the optimal performance and other information-theoretic properties, such as the achievable rates, of a given code is crucial, as these factors determine the fundamental limits imposed by the encoding in conjunction with the noise channel. Here, we use the transpose channel to analytically obtain the near-optimal performance of any Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code under pure loss and pure amplification. We present rigorous connections between GKP code’s near-optimal performance and its dual lattice geometry and average input energy. With no energy constraint, we show that when |𝜏/(1−𝜏)| is an integer, specific families of GKP codes simultaneously achieve the loss and amplification capacity. 𝜏 is the transmissivity (gain) for loss (amplification). Our results establish GKP code as the first structured bosonic code family that achieves the capacity of loss and amplification.

Constraint energy minimizing generalized multiscale finite element method for multi-continuum Richards equations

In fluid flow simulation, the multi-continuum model is a useful strategy. When the heterogeneity and contrast of coefficients are high, the system becomes multiscale, and some kinds of reduced order methods are demanded. Combining these techniques with nonlinearity, we will consider in this paper a dual-continuum model which is generalized as a multi-continuum model for a coupled system of nonlinear Richards equations as unsaturated flows, in complex heterogeneous fractured porous media; and we will solve it by a novel multiscale approach utilizing the constraint energy minimizing generalized multiscale finite element method (CEM-GMsFEM). In particular, such a nonlinear system will be discretized in time and then linearized by Picard iteration (whose global convergence is proved theoretically). Subsequently, we tackle the resulting linearized equations by the CEM-GMsFEM and obtain proper offline multiscale basis functions to span the multiscale space (which contains the pressure solution). More specifically, we first introduce two new sources of samples, and the GMsFEM is used over each coarse block to build local auxiliary multiscale basis functions via solving local spectral problems, that are crucial for detecting high-contrast channels. Second, per oversampled coarse region, local multiscale basis functions are created through the CEM as constrainedly minimizing an energy functional. Various numerical tests for our approach reveal that the error converges with the coarse-grid size and that only few oversampling layers as well as basis functions are needed.
