Hierarchical distributed voltage regulation

Embodiments of the disclosure provide for hierarchically distributed voltage regulation and power flow optimization in a power distribution network. According to one embodiment, a regional coordinator system may determine power flow for an autonomous grid (AG) representing a portion of the distribution network based on a set of voltage parameters from nodes in the AG. The set of voltage parameters my include a current voltage magnitude. The regional coordinator system may provide, to a central controller system of the distribution network, one or more power flow parameters based on the determined power flow for the AG.

LLM-Based Adaptive Distribution Voltage Regulation Under Frequent Topology Changes: An In-Context MPC Framework

This paper proposes a large language model (LLM) based adaptive inverter control for distribution voltage regulation under frequent topology changes. We leverage the ability of the LLM to perform in-context learning and create a topology-adaptive surrogate model for power flow calculation. The surrogate model is then integrated with a long short-term memory-based load forecaster and a model predictive control (MPC) scheme to achieve the optimal inverter control that adapts to frequent topology changes. Unlike many existing works that assume fixed-topology grids or require the knowledge of all possible topologies when training a model, the proposed in-context MPC method tackles the distribution voltage control problem under various topologies and adapts to unknown topologies with limited data requirement for fine-tuning. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated on a modified IEEE 123-bus test system.

Experimental Analysis of Distribution Network Voltage Regulation Using Smart Inverters

Smart inverters (SIs) have demonstrated their potential to provide grid services for both transmission and distribution systems. One of these grid services, distribution network voltage regulation by SIs, has the potential to improve network voltage regulation through controlling the reactive and active power output of the SIs. Voltage regulation by SIs will be distributed and might be better suited to controlling local conditions to complement traditional voltage-regulating assets, e.g., tap-changing transformers, capacitor banks, and line voltage regulators. There is a gap in the literature on comparing the SI response characteristics when the SIs are controlled by a local controller or external control signals. This paper presents an experimental study to characterize SI reactive power regulation responses to two different control methods: autonomous control and remote dispatch. We found that SI reactive power regulation responses exhibit important differences between these methods in terms of delays and ramp rate. Finally, power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of these two methods. The PHIL test results show that the SI response characteristics for autonomous control and remote dispatch need to be considered when planning for distribution network voltage regulation using SIs.

Distributed Data-Driven Optimization for Voltage Regulation in Distribution Systems

Here, this paper proposes a distributed data-driven optimization framework for voltage regulation in distribution systems. The recursive kernel regression and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) are selected to cover the system learning and distributed optimization tasks. The proposed distributed data-driven framework is capable of having a rapid response to system or load changes while considering the operation optimality. Besides, the distributed algorithm parallels the computation tasks and reduces the computational expense of a single agent. To validate the performance of the proposed method, a hypothetical 7-Bus system and the IEEE 123-Bus system are selected to show the effectiveness of the proposed data-driven framework. According to the numerical study results, the proposed method offers great flexibility for selecting customized kernel models for different regions and can effectively improve the system voltage profile in a distributed manner.

A Fairness-based Distributed Energy Coordination for Voltage Regulation in Distribution Systems

The rapid adoption of photovoltaic (PV) systems combined with falling prices of energy storage is paving the way for a future in which customers could locally supply their energy needs and export surplus power to the grid. However, reverse power flow from multiple sites in a network can cause overvoltage that decreases system reliability and the utilization level of PV system. In this paper, we present a two-stage approach to solve the energy coordination problem in distribution networks. In the first stage, a household with PV and energy storage is optimized to allow customers to adopt different control strategies such as load following and tariff arbitrage. We show that such customer-led control strategies can cause reverse power flows during peak PV generation periods, thus resulting in overvoltage. In such cases, the second stage of the proposed approach is called upon to solve a fairness-based energy coordination problem that can maintain voltages within limits while maximizing the PV generation while fairly distributing the actions among all the PV systems. As a result, each of the resources in the network has equal opportunity to export power and shares the responsibility of voltage regulation. Simulation studies have been carried out on the IEEE 13-bus test feeder to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Voltage regulation in distribution grids: A survey

Environmental and sustainability concerns have caused a recent surge in the penetration of distributed energy resources into the power grid. This may lead to voltage violations in the distribution systems making voltage regulation more relevant than ever. Owing to this and rapid advancements in sensing, communication, and computation technologies, the literature on voltage control techniques is growing at a rapid pace in distribution networks. In particular, there is a paradigm shift from traditional offline centralized approaches to distributed ones leveraging increased and varied types of actuators, real-time sensing, fast and efficient computations, and an overall distributed situational awareness. This paper reviews state-of-the-art voltage control algorithms, summarizes the underlying methods, and classifies their coordination mechanisms into local, centralized, distributed, and decentralized. The underlying solution methodologies are further classified into two categories, open-loop and feedback-based. Two specific example workflows are provided to illustrate these solutions for voltage regulation.

Experimental Analysis of Distribution Network Voltage Regulation Using Smart Inverters: Preprint

Smart inverters (SI) have huge potential in providing grid services which has not been fully realized yet. One of these grid services, distribution network voltage regulation by SI, can improve the network voltage by regulating the SI reactive and active power output. Voltage regulation by SI is much faster compared to traditional voltage regulating devices, e.g. tap changing transformer, capacitor banks. However, there is gap in available published literature on the characteristics of SIs when the SI is controlled by local controller or external control signal. This paper presents the experimental study to characterize SI reactive power regulation response to two different control methods: autonomous control method and remote dispatch method. It was found that IS reactive power regulation response could be significantly different in terms of delay, and ramp rate for these two methods. Finally, Power-Hardware-in-The-Loop (PHIL) tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of these two methods. The PHIL tests results show that SI response characteristics for autonomous control method and remote dispatch method need to be considered during planning for distribution network voltage regulation using SI.

Fairness-Aware Distributed Energy Coordination for Voltage Regulation in Power Distribution Systems

The accelerating deployment of solar photovoltaics into low-voltage distribution networks can cause reverse power flow and overvoltage problems. However, if coordinated properly, the real and reactive power flexibility of these resources enables distribution operators to manage their networks more efficiently. Existing literature is rich in droop-based control (Volt-Watt and Volt-VAr) and optimization-based distributed energy coordination for four-quadrant control of photovoltaics to prevent overvoltage issues. While optimal coordination can effectively mitigate overvoltage, it tends to treat resources at sensitive parts of the grid unfairly. Here, to address this concern, we propose a distributed optimal power flow formulation that incorporates fairness in curtailing photovoltaic generation and utilizes the reactive power capability of smart inverters. The proposed distributed formulation allows for scalable resource aggregation that can be leveraged to achieve fairness within a certain segment of the grid and/or fairness across the entire network. Fair curtailment of photovoltaic systems is demonstrated with aggregation at each of two layers in a distribution network: 1) area-level fairness and 2) feeder-level fairness. To explore the trade-off between fairness and optimal utilization, the fairness-aware control actions are compared against the performance of a centralized controller that aims to maximize the aggregate PV generation without incorporating fairness. Simulation results show that introducing area-level fairness increased curtailment by 0.0101 percentage points and feeder-level fairness increased curtailment by 0.0458 percentage points compared to a fairness-agnostic control.

Two-Stage Deep Reinforcement Learning for Distribution System Voltage Regulation and Peak Load Management

The growing integration of distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) in distribution systems could result in adverse effects during grid operation. This paper develops a two-agent soft actor critic-based deep reinforcement learning (SAC-DRL) solution to simultaneously control PV inverters and battery energy storage systems for voltage regulation and peak demand reduction. The novel two-stage framework, featured with two different control agents, is applied for daytime and nighttime operations to enhance control performance. Comparison results with other control methods on a real feeder in Western Colorado demonstrate that the proposed method can provide advanced voltage regulation with modest active power curtailment and reduce peak load demand from feeder's head.

Data-Driven Voltage Regulation of Distribution Grid Using Nonlinear Autoregressive Model with Exogenous Inputs (NARX)

This article proposes data-driven control via a nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous inputs (NARX) for real-time voltage regulation of a modified feeder using reactive power sources. Traditional voltage control strategies rely on rule-based heuristics or optimization techniques, which often require detailed system models and extensive computational resources. The NARX-based controller learns system dynamics from historical data and predicts optimal reactive power dispatch in real-time for voltage correction. The proposed approach is evaluated on a power system feeder model under varying load and network conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the NARX-based controller achieves improved voltage regulation, offering higher adaptability to system fluctuations. This study highlights the potential of data-driven control for enhancing the reliability of power distribution networks.

Physics-Informed Graph Neural Networks for Collaborative Dynamic Reconfiguration and Voltage Regulation in Unbalanced Distribution Systems

Network reconfiguration has long been employed as a strategic approach to minimize power distribution system losses and effectively regulate voltage levels. Tap-changing voltage regulators are also critical for controlling bus voltages, especially in accommodating the increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) with intermittent outputs. This paper introduces novel methodologies to address the challenges of dynamic reconfiguration and optimal tap setting in unbalanced three-phase distribution systems. We propose an approximated mixed-integer quadratically constrained program (MIQCP) to model dynamic reconfiguration, along with a pioneering formulation for voltage regulator (VR) tap-setting based on Special Ordered Set type 1 (SOS1). To mitigate computational complexity, we propose a physics-informed spatial-temporal graph convolutional network (STGCN) with an integrated link classifier. The proposed approach enables efficient solution generation by fixing specific variables in the MIQCP instance and solving the simplified sub-MIP using an MIP solver. Numerical studies demonstrate the superior prediction accuracy of our STGCN model compared to baseline neural network models, resulting in reduced DER curtailment and voltage deviation with shorter computation time.

Assessing the Optimality of LinDist3Flow for Optimal Tap Selection of Step Voltage Regulators in Unbalanced Distribution Networks

The adoption of distributed energy resources such as photovoltaics (PVs) has increased dramatically during the previous decade. The increased penetration of PVs into distribution networks (DNs) can cause voltage fluctuations that have to be mitigated. One of the key utility assets employed to this end are step-voltage regulators (SVRs). It is desirable to include tap selection of SVRs in optimal power flow (OPF) routines, a task that turns out to be challenging because the resultant OPF problem is nonconvex with added complexities stemming from accurate SVR modeling. While several convex relaxations based on semi-definite programming (SDP) have been presented in the literature for optimal tap selection, SDP based schemes do not scale well and are challenging to implement in large-scale planning or operational frameworks. This paper deals with the optimal tap selection (OPTS) problem for wye-connected SVRs using linear approximations of power flow equations. Specifically, the LinDist3Flow model is adopted and the effective SVR ratio is assumed to be continuous- enabling the formulation of a problem called LinDist3Flow-OPTS, which amounts to a linear program. The scalability and optimality gap of LinDist3Flow-OPTS are evaluated with respect to existing SDP-based and nonlinear programming techniques for optimal tap selection in three standard feeders, namely, the IEEE 13-bus, 123-bus, and 8500-node DNs. For all DNs considered, LinDist3Flow-OPTS achieves an optimality gap of approximately 1% or less while significantly lowering the computational burden.

Analytic Neural Network Gaussian Process Enabled Chance-Constrained Voltage Regulation for Active Distribution Systems with PVs, Batteries and EVs

This paper proposes an analytic neural network Gaussian process (NNGP)-based chance-constrained real-time voltage regulation method for active distribution systems with photovoltaics (PVs), batteries, and electric vehicles (EVs). NNGP can utilize historical measurement data to achieve real-time probabilistic node voltage estimation through Bayesian inference. Then, NNGP is fully analytically embedded into the optimal power flow model to perform voltage regulation and adapt to various topological changes. The uncertainties of voltage estimations are easily considered via the chance constraint, and it has been shown that the adoption of this chance constraint can significantly improve the reliability of voltage regulation under various scenarios. The comparison results with other methods, carried out on a real 759-node distribution system located in western Colorado, U.S., show that the proposed method can achieve accurate voltage estimation across different topologies and reliably perform voltage regulation considering PVs, batteries, and EVs.

Employing Interacting Qubits for Distributed Microgrid Control

To empower flexible and scalable operations, distributed control of multi-inverter microgrids, based on classical communication networks among distributed energy resources, has attracted considerable attention as it can guarantee synchronization and provide suitable remedies to the problem of improper power sharing. Notwithstanding this, resilience of the current schemes on classical communication makes microgrids vulnerable to cyber attacks. Inspired by recent revolutionary breakthroughs in quantum communication, in this paper, we devise a novel synchronization mechanism. We extend the synchronization framework utilized in distributed control algorithms to networks of quantum systems by generating pinning terms and coupling mechanism for the new synchronization rule via exploiting proper quantum jump operators and observables, and show that the quantum system will converge to a time-variant target state. Our devised quantum distributed controller (QDC) gives rise to a novel quantum communication scheme for distributed control of microgrids and enables microgrids to exploit the state-of-the-art quantum communication frameworks as communication infrastructure. Finally, test results on two representative AC and DC networked microgrids validate the efficacy and universality of the quantum distributed control.

A Bilevel Voltage Regulation Operation for Distribution Systems With Self-Operated Microgrids

The emerging of microgrids in distribution systems has significantly enhanced the resilience of power grids. However, the operators of a distribution system and microgrids therein can be different and have accessibility to different devices. To model the operation of such a grid, this work proposes a bilevel formulation and probes into the voltage regulation operation, considering the interaction between different systems. The proposed bilevel formulation considers the cooperation of active energy resources (AER), transformer tap-changers, and capacitor banks that are controlled by different operators. To facilitate the solution time of the target bilevel optimization, the lower-level problems with different objectives are modeled using deep neural networks (DNNs) which are then converted into a set of constraints. Hence, the bilevel problem can be reformed to a single-level problem. Lastly, the proposed solution procedures are validated using a customized joint system constructed by the IEEE 123-bus system and a real distribution system in Iowa. According to the numerical validation results, the solution time of the proposed nonlinear activation function based DNN model is 69 times faster than other methods in solving voltage regulation with a bilevel structure.
