Giant exciton-enhanced shift currents and direct current conduction with subbandgap photo excitations produced by many-electron interactions

Significance Shift current, a bulk photovoltaic effect, arises from nonlinear light–matter interaction in a noncentrosymmetric crystal under continuous wave illumination. Although it is a promising mechanism for photocurrent generation without p–n junctions, the short-circuit current (which is related to the power efficiency of a solar cell device) is usually low. It is therefore important to understand the physics of the phenomenon and find materials with strong shift current conductivity. We calculate the shift current conductivity including excitonic effects in a real material (monolayer GeS) from first principles. We show that electron–hole interactions can dramatically enhance and qualitatively change shift current in reduced-dimensional materials. Our results indicate low-dimensional materials are promising candidates for next-generation photovoltaic devices with high efficiencies.

Production and diffusion of H 2 O 2 during the interaction of a direct current pulsed atmospheric pressure plasma jet on a hydrogel

The interaction of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jets with hydrogels has been used as a model system to study the interaction of plasmas with tissues. In this study, we analyze the diffusion of reactive oxygen species (in particular H 2 O 2 ) and quantify the amount of plasma-produced H 2 O 2 species that penetrates into a gelatin hydrogel. We show that the diffusion constant of H 2 O 2 in 10% gelatin hydrogel is similar to its diffusion constant in water and that the production of H 2 O 2 in the hydrogel is significantly less than the production of H 2 O 2 in distilled water for the same plasma operation conditions suggesting that the scavenging of OH radicals at the plasma-gel interface significantly reduces the H 2 O 2 production.

Rugged Direct-Current Transducer

Direct-current transducer withstands thermal and mechanical shocks. Operates from single, nominally 15-V power supply and nearly insensitive to both large variations in temperature and variations of as much as plus or minus 5 V in supply voltage. Its output voltage highly linear function of sensed current, with full-scale value of about 3 Vdc and offset of about 0.1 Vdc at 0 sensed current. Ruggedness of transducer due in large part to novel magnetic core, machined from solid block of nickel/iron high-permeability, low-hysteresis alloy.

New Approaches for Direct Current (DC) Balanced SpaceWire

Direct Current (DC) line balanced SpaceWire is attractive for a number of reasons. Firstly, a DC line balanced interface provides the ability to isolate the physical layer with either a transformer or capacitor to achieve higher common mode voltage rejection and or the complete galvanic isolation in the case of a transformer. And secondly, it provides the possibility to reduce the number of conductors and transceivers in the classical SpaceWire interface by half by eliminating the Strobe line. Depending on the modulator scheme the clock data recovery frequency requirements may be only twice that of the transmit clock, or even match the transmit clock: depending on the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) decoder design. In this paper, several different implementation scenarios will be discussed. Two of these scenarios are backward compatible with the existing SpaceWire hardware standards except for changes at the character level. Three other scenarios, while decreasing by half the standard SpaceWire hardware components, will require changes at both the character and signal levels and work with fixed rates. Other scenarios with variable data rates will require an additional SpaceWire interface handshake initialization sequence.

Study on Conversion from an Existing Alternating Current Medium-Voltage Line to a Direct Current Line: A Case of Load or Source Expansion

Simultaneous increase of power generation through renewable systems and load due owing to the rapid growth in electrified road transportation systems, leads to new challenges in the design, operation, and protection of distribution-level electrical power systems. This paper addresses challenges related to the integration of new sources or loads to a distribution grid through long alternating current lines. The International Council on Large Electric Systems medium-voltage benchmark model developed for North America was used for simulation studies. Use cases were developed to illuminate the issues related to long alternating current lines and the usefulness of medium-voltage direct current lines in a distribution network.

Determination of work functions near melting points of refractory metals by using a direct-current arc.

A direct-current arc in argon at atmospheric pressure was used to determine effective work functions of refractory metals, including tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, and niobium. The procedure is experimentally advantageous, because surface cleanliness of the specimen is not critical, high vacuum is not required, and the anode-cathode spacing is not critical. The experimental procedure involves striking an arc to a metal wire cathode to form a melted ball having an emitting area defined by its diameter. The literature melting point of the metal is taken as the emitting temperature. By using these parameters and the known arc current, effective work functions were calculated from the Richardson-Dushman equation. The calculated work functions agree with recommended handbook values to within about 0.1 V and have typical repeatabilities of 0.02 V.

Magnetic Direct-Current-Measuring Circuits

Two circuits measure large direct currents in main conductors by use of magnetic fields produced by currents in glassy metal toroidal ferromagnetic cores surrounding main conductors. In both circuits, direct currents to be measured deduced from transient voltages generated in multiturn windings by transitions between magnetic fields produced by measured currents and saturation magnetic fields of cores.

Direct current ballast circuit for metal halide lamp

A direct current ballast circuit for a two electrode metal halide lamp is described. Said direct current ballast circuit includes a low voltage DC input and a high frequency power amplifier and power transformer for developing a high voltage output. The output voltage is rectified by diodes and filtered by inductor and capacitor to provide a regulated DC output through commutating diodes to one terminal of the lamp at the output terminal. A feedback path from the output of the filter capacitor through the bias resistor to power the high frequency circuit which includes the power amplifier and the power transformer for sustaining circuit operations during low voltage transients on the input DC supply is described. A current sensor connected to the output of the lamp through terminal for stabilizing lamp current following breakdown of the lamp is described.

Starting characteristics of direct current motors powered by solar cells

Direct current motors are used in photovoltaic systems. Important characteristics of electric motors are the starting to rated current and torque ratios. These ratios are dictated by the size of the solar cell array and are different for the various dc motor types. Discussed here is the calculation of the starting to rated current ratio and starting to rated torque ratio of the permanent magnet, and series and shunt excited motors when powered by solar cells for two cases: with and without a maximum-power-point-tracker (MPPT) included in the system. Comparing these two cases, one gets a torque magnification of about 3 for the permanent magnet motor and about 7 for other motor types. The calculation of the torques may assist the PV system designer to determine whether or not to include an MPPT in the system.

Alternating Direct Current (ADC) - A New Form of Efficient Energy Transmission for Renewable Sources

The prevailing means of electricity transmission through Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC) have limitations with the ongoing transition to renewable energy sources. In this paper, we discuss a new form of energy transmission, known as alternating direct current (ADC) that would provide significant savings in energy consumption and simultaneously allow efficient utilization of generated energy from renewable sources. This has become possible due to substantial advances in electronics and optoelectronics technologies since the days of Nicholas Tesla and Thomas Edison. Recent efforts of implementing the proposed ADC technology in relevant environments have demonstrated significant energy savings and opened a new paradigm that has the potential to provide an efficient and cost-effective pathway for transition to renewable energy sources even with the existing grid infrastructure. The DC power utilization initiated by Thomas Edison can be stored in battery arrangement but suffers from line loss and hence is not efficient for long-distance transmission. However, AC power developed by Nicholas Tesla cannot be stored efficiently but can be transmitted over long distances due to significantly lower line losses. Currently, AC power is the global foundational energy transmission methodology used because of events that took place over 135 years ago involving Edison, Tesla, and Westinghouse, and since AC power can transmit long distances from power plants to end users efficiently and economically. Approximately 50 years ago, the introduction of semiconductors in commercialized electronic devices and products changed the way people consume electricity. Also, over the years, the expanding adaptation of nonlinear loads has adversely affected the grid stability and hence the utility infrastructures worldwide.

Stability of Large Direct-Current Power Systems That Use Switching Converters and the Application of Switching Converters to the International Space Station

As direct-current space power systems continue to grow in size, switching power converters are playing an ever larger role in power conditioning and control. When a large direct-current system that uses power converters of this type is being designed, special attention must be placed on the electrical stability of the system and of the individual loads on the system. The impedance specification approach for system stability was accomplished as a result of cooperative work of the International Space Station program team, which consists of the NASA Lewis Research Center, the Boeing Company, and Rocketdyne Division/Rockwell International. In addition, major contributions were provided by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University working under a grant to NASA Lewis.
