A method for crystallographic mapping of an alpha-beta titanium alloy with nanometre resolution using scanning precession electron diffraction and open-source software libraries

An approach for the crystallographic mapping of two-phase alloys on the nanoscale using a combination of scanned precession electron diffraction and open-source python libraries is introduced in this paper. This method is demonstrated using the example of a two-phase α/β titanium alloy. The data were recorded using a direct electron detector to collect the patterns, and recently developed algorithms to perform automated indexing and analyse the crystallography from the results. Very high-quality mapping is achieved at a 3 nm step size. The results show the expected Burgers orientation relationships between the α laths and β matrix, as well as the expected misorientations between α laths. A minor issue was found that one area was affected by 180° ambiguities in indexing occur due to this area being aligned too close to a zone axis of the α with twofold projection symmetry (not present in 3D) in the zero-order Laue Zone, and this should be avoided in data acquisition in the future. Nevertheless, this study demonstrates a good workflow for the analysis of nanocrystalline two- or multi-phase materials, which will be of widespread use in analysing two-phase titanium and other systems and how they evolve as a function of thermomechanical treatments.

Laue-DIALS: Open-source software for polychromatic x-ray diffraction data

Most x-ray sources are inherently polychromatic. Polychromatic (“pink”) x-rays provide an efficient way to conduct diffraction experiments as many more photons can be used and large regions of reciprocal space can be probed without sample rotation during exposure—ideal conditions for time-resolved applications. Analysis of such data is complicated, however, causing most x-ray facilities to discard >99% of x-ray photons to obtain monochromatic data. Key challenges in analyzing polychromatic diffraction data include lattice searching, indexing and wavelength assignment, correction of measured intensities for wavelength-dependent effects, and deconvolution of harmonics. We recently described an algorithm, Careless, that can perform harmonic deconvolution and correct measured intensities for variation in wavelength when presented with integrated diffraction intensities and assigned wavelengths. Here, we present Laue-DIALS, an open-source software pipeline that indexes and integrates polychromatic diffraction data. Laue-DIALS is based on the dxtbx toolbox, which supports the DIALS software commonly used to process monochromatic data. As such, Laue-DIALS provides many of the same advantages: an open-source, modular, and extensible architecture, providing a robust basis for future development. We present benchmark results showing that Laue-DIALS, together with Careless, provides a suitable approach to the analysis of polychromatic diffraction data, including for time-resolved applications.

Super-resolution model for overlapping peak detection and improved spatial resolution in high-energy diffraction microscopy

Reconstruction quality in Far-field High-Energy Diffraction Microscopy (FF-HEDM) is limited by the spatial resolution of area detectors and the frequent occurrence of overlapping diffraction spots. To address these challenges, we developed a super-resolution (SR) framework using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to recreate 2D diffraction peaks at up to ×8 resolution from raw detector data. A specialized simulation tool was created to generate synthetic training datasets with varying degrees of peak overlap. Integrated into the Microstructural Imaging using Diffraction Analysis Software (MIDAS), the SR model improves the spatial accuracy and precision of 3D grain reconstruction by an order of magnitude. This approach provides a robust solution for investigation of complex micromechanical states and material classes where the analysis is limited by the presence of overlapping peaks. Furthermore, the methodology developed here can potentially be extended to other techniques that require sub-pixel accuracy for high-fidelity data analysis.

Correction to Unveiling the Role of Al 2 O 3 in Preventing Surface Reconstruction During High-Voltage Cycling of Lithium-Ion Batteries

A correction to this article was necessary to replace the original Figure 2 with the actual data in the revised Figure 2 shown here. An error was made while preparing the graphs from the neutron diffraction analysis software, and panel a was accidentally inserted into the panel b–d spots, such that all four panels were replicates. Since the original analysis of the data collected was made correctly, the conclusions and key points related to this section and the whole article remain unchanged. The revised goodness factors are slightly different because the refinements were repeated with small changes to the refinement conditions. The corresponding author has obtained approval from all coauthors in the article prior the submission of the Correction. The authors apologize for any inconveniences caused.

Strength of tantalum to 276 GPa determined by two x-ray diffraction techniques using diamond anvil cells

Tantalum (Ta) is a metal that has useful properties that make it useful in extreme environments. It is therefore important to understand how Ta performs in such extreme conditions by accurately measuring its properties. In this work, the yield strength of tantalum has been measured at pressures up to 276 GPa using axial and radial x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods in diamond anvil cells (DAC). We measured strength using XRD in a radial DAC to 50 GPa, in an axial DAC to 60 GPa using diamonds with standard flat culets, and in a final experiment to 276 GPa using toroidal diamond anvils. The radial XRD data were refined using the Material Analysis Using Diffraction (MAUD) Rietveld software package to extract lattice strain and the yield strength. The axial data were refined using the General Structure Analysis System (GSAS) II and a linewidth method was used to calculate the yield strength. The yield strength measured near ambient pressure was found to be 0.5 GPa and increased with pressure up to 50 GPa, where the yield strength plateaued at a value of 2.4 GPa. At pressures above 60 GPa, the strength increased again to a maximum value of 9 GPa at the highest pressure of 276 GPa. Here, the data from the three experiments show good agreement between the methods and previously reported experimental data. This agreement illustrates the value of axial diffraction data for material strength determination and allows for measurements at multihundreds of GPa using toroidal DACs.

MILK : a Python scripting interface to MAUD for automation of Rietveld analysis

Modern diffraction experiments ( e.g. in situ parametric studies) present scientists with many diffraction patterns to analyze. Interactive analyses via graphical user interfaces tend to slow down obtaining quantitative results such as lattice parameters and phase fractions. Furthermore, Rietveld refinement strategies ( i.e. the parameter turn-on-off sequences) tend to be instrument specific or even specific to a given dataset, such that selection of strategies can become a bottleneck for efficient data analysis. Managing multi-histogram datasets such as from multi-bank neutron diffractometers or caked 2D synchrotron data presents additional challenges due to the large number of histogram-specific parameters. To overcome these challenges in the Rietveld software Material Analysis Using Diffraction ( MAUD ), the MAUD Interface Language Kit ( MILK ) is developed along with an updated text batch interface for MAUD . The open-source software MILK is computer-platform independent and is packaged as a Python library that interfaces with MAUD . Using MILK , model selection ( e.g. various texture or peak-broadening models), Rietveld parameter manipulation and distributed parallel batch computing can be performed through a high-level Python interface. A high-level interface enables analysis workflows to be easily programmed, shared and applied to large datasets, and external tools to be integrated with MAUD . Through modification to the MAUD batch interface, plot and data exports have been improved. The resulting hierarchical folders from Rietveld refinements with MILK are compatible with Cinema: Debye–Scherrer , a tool for visualizing and inspecting the results of multi-parameter analyses of large quantities of diffraction data. In this manuscript, the combined Python scripting and visualization capability of MILK is demonstrated with a quantitative texture and phase analysis of data collected at the HIPPO neutron diffractometer.

Automated pipeline processing X-ray diffraction data from dynamic compression experiments on the Extreme Conditions Beamline of PETRA III

Presented and discussed here is the implementation of a software solution that provides prompt X-ray diffraction data analysis during fast dynamic compression experiments conducted within the dynamic diamond anvil cell technique. It includes efficient data collection, streaming of data and metadata to a high-performance cluster (HPC), fast azimuthal data integration on the cluster, and tools for controlling the data processing steps and visualizing the data using the DIOPTAS software package. This data processing pipeline is invaluable for a great number of studies. The potential of the pipeline is illustrated with two examples of data collected on ammonia–water mixtures and multiphase mineral assemblies under high pressure. The pipeline is designed to be generic in nature and could be readily adapted to provide rapid feedback for many other X-ray diffraction techniques, e.g. large-volume press studies, in situ stress/strain studies, phase transformation studies, chemical reactions studied with high-resolution diffraction etc.

Texture measurements on quartz single crystals to validate coordinate systems for neutron time-of-flight texture analysis

In crystallographic texture analysis, ensuring that sample directions are preserved from experiment to the resulting orientation distribution is crucial to obtain physical meaning from diffraction data. This work details a procedure to ensure instrument and sample coordinates are consistent when analyzing diffraction data with a Rietveld refinement using the texture analysis software MAUD . A quartz crystal is measured on the HIPPO diffractometer at Los Alamos National Laboratory for this purpose. The methods described here can be applied to any diffraction instrument measuring orientation distributions in polycrystalline materials.

Materials Characterization Techniques Lecture Series: X-Ray Diffraction, A Summary of LANL's Materials Capabilities in MPA-11 [Slides]

This presentation provides an overview on X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to cover background, fundamentals, limitations, best practices, applications, analysis, software, and resources. To summarize: XRD is a great tool for characterizing solid crystalline samples. X-Rays are E-Mag radiation and generate diffraction profiles based on the phase of the sample. Diffraction patterns are unique to the phase of the sample. Powder diffraction gives us better diffraction profiles. We can obtain both qualitative and quantitative data. Analysis requires us to know a little about our sample and a lot about our diffractometer.

Automated Crystal Orientation Mapping in py4DSTEM using Sparse Correlation Matching

Crystalline materials used in technological applications are often complex assemblies composed of multiple phases and differently oriented grains. Robust identification of the phases and orientation relationships from these samples is crucial, but the information extracted from the diffraction condition probed by an electron beam is often incomplete. We have developed an automated crystal orientation mapping (ACOM) procedure which uses a converged electron probe to collect diffraction patterns from multiple locations across a complex sample. We provide an algorithm to determine the orientation of each diffraction pattern based on a fast sparse correlation method. We demonstrate the speed and accuracy of our method by indexing diffraction patterns generated using both kinematical and dynamical simulations. We have also measured orientation maps from an experimental dataset consisting of a complex polycrystalline twisted helical AuAgPd nanowire. From these maps we identify twin planes between adjacent grains, which may be responsible for the twisted helical structure. All of our methods are made freely available as open source code, including tutorials which can be easily adapted to perform ACOM measurements on diffraction pattern datasets.

DXRD : a user-friendly suite of two- and multiple-beam dynamical X-ray diffraction programs

The DXRD program suite consisting of a series of dynamical theory programs is introduced for computing dynamical X-ray diffraction from single crystals. Its interactive graphical user interfaces (GUIs) allow general users to make complicated calculations with minimal effort. It can calculate plane-wave Darwin curves of single crystals (or multiple crystals) for both the Bragg and Laue cases, including grazing-incidence diffraction and backward diffraction (with Bragg angles approaching 90°). It is also capable of simulating rocking curves for divergent incident X-ray beams with finite bandwidths. A unique feature of DXRD is that it provides a convenient GUI-based multiple-beam diffraction program that can accurately compute arbitrary N-beam diffraction of any geometry using a universal 4N × 4N matrix method. DXRD also provides a mapping program for plotting all the multiple-beam diffraction lines (monochromator glitches) in the azimuth–energy coordinate system. All these functions make DXRD a convenient and powerful software tool for designing crystal-based synchrotron/X-ray optics (monochromators, analyzers, polarizers, phase plates etc.) and for crystal characterization, X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction teaching.
