A US perspective on closing the carbon cycle to defossilize difficult-to-electrify segments of our economy

Electrification to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions is essential to mitigate climate change. However, a substantial portion of our manufacturing and transportation infrastructure will be difficult to electrify and/or will continue to use carbon as a key component, including areas in aviation, heavy-duty and marine transportation, and the chemical industry. In this Roadmap, we explore how multidisciplinary approaches will enable us to close the carbon cycle and create a circular economy by defossilizing these difficult-to-electrify areas and those that will continue to need carbon. Here, we discuss two approaches for this: developing carbon alternatives and improving our ability to reuse carbon, enabled by separations. Furthermore, we posit that co-design and use-driven fundamental science are essential to reach aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Difficult Measurements of Materials Systems at Cryogenic Temperatures: Cryo-EELS and Cryo-4D-STEM

Scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM) in materials science has traditionally been accomplished at room temperature due to their solid state in this temperature range and relative insensitivity to radiolysis damage. Cooling to cryogenic temperatures tended to introduce instabilities such as vibration and drift and can lead to the buildup of carbon contamination or ice reducing contrast. The need to expand TEM experimental techniques into new fields such as quantum and battery materials led to new efforts to reduce these instabilities while achieving temperatures at or well below liquid nitrogen (77 K). Further, developments in detector and spectrometer technology brought new capabilities for high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and scanning nanodiffraction (4D-STEM). These experimental modalities can require even tighter controls of drift, vibration, and exposure time. Here this presentation will discuss accomplishing difficult experiments at cryogenic temperatures in honor of the late Dr. Lena Kourkoutis who inspired and led many such experiments.

Proteogenomic characterization of difficult-to-treat breast cancer with tumor cells enriched through laser microdissection

Abstract Background Breast cancer (BC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among women globally. Despite advances, there is considerable variation in clinical outcomes for patients with non-luminal A tumors, classified as difficult-to-treat breast cancers (DTBC). This study aims to delineate the proteogenomic landscape of DTBC tumors compared to luminal A (LumA) tumors. Methods We retrospectively collected a total of 117 untreated primary breast tumor specimens, focusing on DTBC subtypes. Breast tumors were processed by laser microdissection (LMD) to enrich tumor cells. DNA, RNA, and protein were simultaneously extracted from each tumor preparation, followed by whole genome sequencing, paired-end RNA sequencing, global proteomics and phosphoproteomics. Differential feature analysis, pathway analysis and survival analysis were performed to better understand DTBC and investigate biomarkers. Results We observed distinct variations in gene mutations, structural variations, and chromosomal alterations between DTBC and LumA breast tumors. DTBC tumors predominantly had more mutations inTP53,PLXNB3, Zinc finger genes, and fewer mutations inSDC2,CDH1,PIK3CA,SVIL, andPTEN. Notably, Cytoband 1q21, which contains numerous cell proliferation-related genes, was significantly amplified in the DTBC tumors. LMD successfully minimized stromal components and increased RNA–protein concordance, as evidenced by stromal score comparisons and proteomic analysis. Distinct DTBC and LumA-enriched clusters were observed by proteomic and phosphoproteomic clustering analysis, some with survival differences. Phosphoproteomics identified two distinct phosphoproteomic profiles for high relapse-risk and low relapse-risk basal-like tumors, involving several genes known to be associated with breast cancer oncogenesis and progression, includingKIAA1522,DCK,FOXO3,MYO9B,ARID1A,EPRS,ZC3HAV1, andRBM14. Lastly, an integrated pathway analysis of multi-omics data highlighted a robust enrichment of proliferation pathways in DTBC tumors. Conclusions This study provides an integrated proteogenomic characterization of DTBC vs LumA with tumor cells enriched through laser microdissection. We identified many common features of DTBC tumors and the phosphopeptides that could serve as potential biomarkers for high/low relapse-risk basal-like BC and possibly guide treatment selections.

Smoothed aggregation for difficult stretched mesh and coefficient variation problems

Abstract Four adaptations of the smoothed aggregation algebraic multigrid (SA‐AMG) method are proposed with an eye toward improving the convergence and robustness of the solver in situations when the discretization matrix contains many weak connections. These weak connections can cause higher than expected levels of fill‐in within the coarse discretization matrices and can also give rise to suboptimal smoothing within the prolongator smoothing phase. These smoothing drawbacks are due to the relatively small size of some diagonal entries within the filtered matrix that one obtains after dropping the weak connections. The new algorithms consider modifications to the Jacobi‐like step that defines the prolongator smoother, modifications to the filtered matrix, and also direct modifications to the resulting grid transfer operators. Numerical results are given illustrating the potential benefits of the proposed adaptations.

Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 : Probing site mixing of the Ru 3 Sn 7 structure type with elements difficult to distinguish by diffraction

Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 was synthesized through arc-melting stoichiometric ratios of the elements, and a Ru 3 Sn 7 -type structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Because Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 contains Ga and Ge, which have very similar X-ray and neutron scattering factors, any Ga/Ge crystallographic site preference cannot be determined with diffraction alone. The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of using multiple techniques to characterize otherwise structurally ambiguous intermetallic compounds. Here, we utilize 71 Ga nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and an analysis of the X-ray absorption fine structure to clarify the amount of Ga/Ge site mixing. Our combined use of X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy provides a comprehensive structural analysis of Ga site mixing across the Ge crystallographic sites, enhancing the understanding of the structure and properties of Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 .

Triplet Excitons in Pentacene Are Intrinsically Difficult to Dissociate via Charge Transfer

Singlet fission (SF) has the potential to bypass the Shockley–Queisser limit for solar cell efficiency through the production of two electron–hole pairs per photon. However, in polycrystalline pentacene this goal is hindered by slow charge transfer from triplets (=10 7 s –1 ) after SF. In this paper we demonstrate that slow charge transfer is an intrinsic property of triplet states in this material and most likely not connected with the triplet pair states that may result from singlet fission. We compare two perylene diimide/pentacene charge transfer systems that differ only by triplet generation mechanism: SF versus intersystem crossing (ISC), sensitized by using a soluble lead phthalocyanine derivative. We use time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) to measure the charge yield in each system and transient absorption (TA) to follow the triplet population dynamics. These experiments are described by a single global kinetic model, with most of its parameters fixed via control experiments. While we observe modest differences in the charge-transfer rate constants between each sample, 4–10× as a function of triplet generation mechanism, all samples remain far below the predicted diffusion-limited rate constant of 10 7 –10 8 s –1 .

In search of molecular ions for optical cycling: a difficult road

Optical cycling, a continuous photon scattering off atoms or molecules, plays a central role in the quantum information science. While optical cycling has been experimentally achieved for many neutral species, few molecular ions have been investigated. We present a systematic theoretical search for diatomic molecular ions suitable for optical cycling using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods. Inspired by the electronic structure patterns of laser-cooled neutral molecules, we establish the design principles for molecular ions and explore various possible cationic molecular frameworks. The results show that finding a perfect molecular ion for optical cycling is challenging, yet possible. Among various possible diatomic molecules we suggest several candidates, which require further attention from both theory and experiment: YF + , SiO + , PN + , SiBr + , and BO + .

Alignment of the magnetic field in star-forming regions and why it might be difficult to observe

ABSTRACT Magnetic fields are an important component of the interstellar medium (ISM) and exhibit strongly varying field strengths and a non-trivial correlation with the gas density. Its dynamical impact varies between individual regions of the ISM and correlates with the orientation of the field with respect to the gas structures. Using high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of the ISM, we explore the connection between the orientation of the field and the dynamical state of the gas. We find that the onset of gravitational instability in molecular gas above a density of $\rho \sim 10^{-21}\, \mathrm{g\, cm}^{-3}$$(n\sim 400\, \mathrm{cm}^{-3})$ coincides with an alignment of the magnetic field lines and the gas flow. At this transition, the gradient of the density changes from mainly perpendicular to preferentially parallel to the field lines. A connection between the three-dimensional alignment and projected two-dimensional observables is non-trivial, because of a large dispersion of the magnetic field orientation along the line of sight. The turbulent correlation lengths can be small compared to the typical integration lengths. As a consequence, the small-scale signal of the orientation can sensitively depend on the line of sight or the dynamical state of the cloud can fluctuate stochastically or be completely averaged out. With higher spatial resolution more small-scale structures are resolved, which aggravates the link between magneto-hydrodynamical quantities and projected observables.

To Dim or Not to Dim: Why Is That Still a Difficult Question?

LED lighting is becoming widely adopted and is displacing most traditional lighting technologies. However, the traditional methods used to control light sources have not been similarly displaced. In an effort to address some of the long-standing weaknesses of one of the most popular control methods, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently released the ANSI C137.1-2019 standard for 0-10V control of LED drivers and fluorescent ballasts. The new standard builds upon previous specifications by providing requirements for some aspects of dimming-curve shape and endpoints. In order to characterize the performance variation found in market-available LED drivers, and to explore the potential impact of ANSI C137.1, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Connected Lighting Test Bed was used to evaluate the response to 0-10V controls signals of 21 different LED outdoor cobrahead luminaires (typically used for street-lighting applications) that claimed dimmability via a 0-10V interface. The results provide insights about how ANSI C137.1 will affect the performance variation currently found among such products.
