In-plane and through-plane dielectric properties of graphene oxide membrane: Effect of Al 3 + modification

A graphene oxide (GO) membrane can be used in structural dielectric capacitors and planar micro-supercapacitors as a dielectric separator material due to its excellent through-plane and in-plane dielectric properties. The ability to tailor the dielectric properties of the GO membrane is crucial for dielectric applications. We believe this to be the first demonstration describing how Al 3+ ions impact the dielectric properties of the GO membrane through cation to oxygenated functional groups interactions. In this work, the Al 3+ -modification to the GO membrane was realized through a facile pre-coordination method followed by layer-by-layer assembling. The influence of Al 3+ on the GO membranes’ through-plane and in-plane dielectric properties (dielectric constant and dielectric loss) was investigated in the frequency range from 0.01 Hz to 10 5 Hz. Plane-to-plane and edge-to-edge Al 3+ coordination with the functional group on the basal plane or edge of the GO sheets was proposed to understand the metal ion's impact on the dielectric properties. The results demonstrated that the Al 3+ modification was an effective strategy to tailoring the GO membranes’ dielectric properties in a low frequency regime and further suggested the possibility of designing dielectric GO membranes with controllable dielectric performance. At a low frequency range (0.01–1 Hz), the addition of Al 3+ increased the through-plane dielectric constant and decreased the in-plane dielectric constant. In terms of dielectric loss, unmodified GO membranes exhibited a higher in-plane dielectric loss than the through-plane dielectric loss. Al 3+ -modified GO membranes exhibited increased through-plane dielectric loss and decreased in-plane dielectric loss compared to the unmodified GO membranes.

Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Aligned Electrospun Fibers

This review paper examines the current state-of-the-art in fabrication of aligned fibers via electrospinning techniques and the effects of these techniques on the mechanical and dielectric properties of electrospun fibers. Molecular orientation, system configuration to align fibers, and post-drawing treatment, like hot/cold drawing process, contribute to better specific strength and specific stiffness properties of nanofibers. The authors suggest that these improved, aligned nanofibers, when applied in composites, have better mechanical and dielectric properties for many structural and multifunctional applications, including advanced aerospace applications and energy storage devices. For these applications, most fiber alignment electrospinning research has focused on either mechanical property improvement or dielectric property improvement alone, but not both simultaneously. Relative to many other nanofiber formation techniques, the electrospinning technique exhibits superior nanofiber formation when considering cost and manufacturing complexity for many situations. Even though the dielectric property of pure nanofiber mat may not be of general interest, the analysis of the combined effect of mechanical and dielectric properties is relevant to the present analysis of improved and aligned nanofibers. A plethora of nanofibers, in particular, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofibers, are discussed for their mechanical and dielectric properties. In addition, other types of electrospun nanofibers are explored for their mechanical and dielectric properties. An exploratory study by the author demonstrates the relationship between mechanical and dielectric properties for specimens obtained from a rotating mandrel horizontal setup.

Exploring dielectric properties in atomistic models of amorphous boron nitride

Abstract We report a theoretical study of dielectric properties of models of amorphous Boron Nitride, using interatomic potentials generated by machine learning. We first perform first-principles simulations on small (about 100 atoms in the periodic cell) sample sizes to explore the emergence of mid-gap states and its correlation with structural features. Next, by using a simplified tight-binding electronic model, we analyse the dielectric functions for complex three dimensional models (containing about 10.000 atoms) embedding varying concentrations of sp 1 , sp 2 and sp 3 bonds between B and N atoms. Within the limits of these methodologies, the resulting value of the zero-frequency dielectric constant is shown to be influenced by the population density of such mid-gap states and their localization characteristics. We observe nontrivial correlations between the structure-induced electronic fluctuations and the resulting dielectric constant values. Our findings are however just a first step in the quest of accessing fully accurate dielectric properties of as-grown amorphous BN of relevance for interconnect technologies and beyond.

Investigation into the crystal structure–dielectric property correlation in barium titanate nanocrystals of different sizes

For high capacitance multilayer ceramic capacitors, high dielectric constant and lead-free ceramic nanoparticles are highly desired. However, as the particle size decreases to a few tens of nanometers, their dielectric constant significantly decreases, and the underlying mechanism has yet to be fully elucidated. Herein, we report a systematic investigation into the crystal structure–dielectric property relationship of combustion-made BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanocrystals. When the nanocrystal size was 100 nm and below, a metastable paraelectric cubic phase was found in the as-received BTO (denoted as arBTO) nanocrystals based on an X-ray diffraction (XRD) study. A stable ferroelectric tetragonal phase was present when the nanocrystal size was above 200 nm. Notably, the cubic arBTO (particle size ≤100 nm) exhibited tetragonal fluctuations as revealed by Raman spectroscopy, whereas the tetragonal arBTO (particle size ≥200 nm) contained ~10% cubic fraction according to the Rietveld fitting of the XRD profiles. Thermal annealing of the multi-grain tetragonal arBTO at 950 °C yielded single crystals of annealed BTO (denoted as anBTO), whose dielectric constants were higher than those of arBTO. However, the single crystalline anBTO prevented the formation of 90° domains; therefore, they exhibited a low dielectric constant of ~300. Although X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy could not identify the exact structural defects, our study revealed that surface and bulk defects formed during synthesis affect the final crystal structures and thus the dielectric properties of BTO nanocrystals with different sizes. Finally, the understanding obtained from this study will help us design high dielectric constant perovskite nanocrystals for next-generation multilayer ceramic capacitor applications.

Modulation of dielectric properties of hexagonal/cubic boron nitride composites

In this work, we synthesized mixed-phase hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN)/cubic-BN (c-BN) composites with varying ratios and investigated their frequency and temperature-dependent dielectric properties. As the ratio of c-BN increased, we observed a corresponding increase in the dielectric constant of the composites. Furthermore, we used spark-plasma sintering (SPS) to treat the mixed-phase composite, which resulted in a phase transformation from mixed phase to pure h-BN phase. Remarkably, the composite exhibited an increase in dielectric constant after the SPS process, which can be attributed to the densification of the composite and the enhancement in grain size. Our approach presents a promising strategy for effectively modulating the dielectric properties of BN, which is crucial for advanced electronics.

Effect of the filler morphology on the crystallization behavior and dielectric properties of the polyvinylidene fluoride‐based composite

Abstract Ceramic/polymer composites can be chemically stable, mechanically strong, and flexible, which make them candidates for electric devices, such as pressure or temperature sensors, energy storage or harvesting devices, actuators, and so forth. Depending on the application, various electrical properties are of importance. Polymers usually have low dielectric permittivity, but increased dielectric permittivity can be achieved by the addition of the ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant. With the aim to enhance dielectric properties of the composite without loss of flexibility, 5 wt% of BaTiO 3 ‐Fe 2 O 3 powder was added into a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. The powder was prepared by different synthesis conditions to produce core/shell structures. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the BaTiO 3 ‐Fe 2 O 3 core/shell filler on the structure and lattice dynamics of the polymer composites was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. Differences in the phase composition and morphology of the filler have an influence on the formation of various polyvinylidene fluoride allomorphs and the degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, the dielectric performances of pure polyvinylidene fluoride and the polymer/ceramic composites were measured.

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N on GaN exhibits attractive high-K dielectric properties

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N thin films of ~100 nm thickness grown on metal polar GaN substrates are found to exhibit significantly enhanced relative dielectric permittivity (ε r ) values relative to AlN. ε r values of ~17–21 for Sc mole fractions of 17%–25% ( x = 0.17–0.25) measured electrically by capacitance–voltage measurements indicate that Sc x Al 1- x N has the largest relative dielectric permittivity of any existing nitride material. Since epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N layers deposited on GaN also exhibit large polarization discontinuity, the heterojunction can exploit the in situ high-K dielectric property to extend transistor operation for power electronics and high-speed microwave applications.

Ag-doped As–S–Se chalcogenide glasses: a correlative study of structural and dielectrical properties

This work is focused on investigating the effect of Ag doping on the dielectric and structural properties of the As–S–Se glass system and their suitability for potential applications in optoelectronics, such as electronic and switching components. A series of glasses from the system Agx(As40S30Se30)100-x (x = 5 at.% Ag) were prepared with melt-quenching technique. Morphological and compositional analysis was performed by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy measurements have shown structural modifications of the glass network upon Ag doping, with creation of new Ag–(S,Se)–As structures, resulting in increased number of defect states. Variations in dielectric permittivity (e') and dielectric loss (e") were investigated in a wide frequency and temperature range, and explained by dominant dipolar and electronic polarization, as well as correlated with the observed structural changes. Improvement in dielectric properties is observed upon doping with Ag. Furthermore, the low dielectric tangent loss at high frequencies for all glassy samples points to a beneficial ability of the material to absorb energy of the external electric field. Good thermal stability of these glasses is confirmed by the calculated temperature coefficient of the dielectric permittivity. Density of localized states in all glasses was determined from AC conductivity and the dielectric tangent loss using a correlated barrier hopping model, and found to increase with Ag concentration. The overall results suggest that Ag doping enhances the electrical and optical quality of this type of glasses, making them suitable as nonlinear optical materials and their applications in devices.

Probing electronic and dielectric properties of ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 atomic layer stacks made with in vacuo atomic layer deposition

Ultrathin (1–4 nm) films of wide-bandgap semiconductors are important to many applications in microelectronics, and the film properties can be sensitively affected by defects especially at the substrate/film interface. Motivated by this, an in vacuo atomic layer deposition (ALD) was developed for the synthesis of ultrathin films of Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 atomic layer stacks (ALSs) on Al electrodes. It is found that the Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS can form an interface with the Al electrode with negligible interfacial defects under the optimal ALD condition whether the starting atomic layer is Ga 2 O 3 or Al 2 O 3 . Such an interface is the key to achieving an optimal and tunable electronic structure and dielectric properties in Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS ultrathin films. In situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy confirms that the electronic structure of Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS can have tunable bandgaps (E g ) between ~2.0 eV for 100% Ga 2 O 3 and ~3.4 eV for 100% Al 2 O 3 . With variable ratios of Ga:Al, the measured E g exhibits significant non-linearity, agreeing with the density functional theory simulation, and tunable carrier concentration. Furthermore, the dielectric constant of ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS capacitors is tunable through the variation in the ratio of the constituent Ga 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 atomic layer numbers from 9.83 for 100% Ga 2 O 3 to 8.28 for 100% Al 2 O 3 . The high ε leads to excellent effective oxide thickness ~1.7–2.1 nm for the ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS, which is comparable to that of high-K dielectric materials.

Ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline self-assembly of mesogen-free sulfonylated side-chain chiral polyethers and their high dielectric property

To achieve large spontaneous polarization for ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers, we have designed a series of mesogen-free isotactic polyethers with sulfonylated side chains. Different from prior studies using linear alkyl side chains, in this work a methyl branch was implemented in the alkyl side chains of the chiral polyethers. As a result of the continuous twist from the methyl branches and strong dipole-dipole interactions among neighboring sulfonyl groups, a helical chain conformation with tilted side chains was achieved. When the branched side chains were short (e.g., C5) and double chirality existed in both the main chain and side chains, a crystalline structure was obtained. When the branched side chains were long (e.g., ≥ C8) and single chirality existed in the main chain, an ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phase was induced. Their high-field dielectric property was studied by electric displacement-electric field (D-E) loop tests; however, no ferroelectric behavior was observed up to 200 MV/m. It was considered that the dipole-dipole interaction among neighboring sulfonyl groups in the helical chains was too strong to allow easy ferroelectric flipping.

Magnetic and dielectric property control in the multivalent nanoscale perovskite Eu 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3

We report nanoscale Eu 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3 , a multiferroic in the bulk and candidate in the search to quantify the electric dipole moment of the electron. Eu 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3 , in the form of nanoparticles and other nanostructures is interesting for nanocomposite integration, biomedical imaging and fundamental research, based upon the prospect of polarizability, f-orbital magnetism and tunable optical/radio luminescence. We developed a [non-hydrolytic]sol–[H 2 O-activated]gel route, derived from in-house metallic Ba (s) /Eu (s) alkoxide precursors and Ti{(OCH(CH 3 ) 2 } 4 . Two distinct nanoscale compounds of Ba:Ti:Eu with the parent perovskite crystal structure were produced, with variable dielectric, magnetic and optical properties, based on altering the oxidizing/reducing conditions. Eu 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3 prepared under air/O 2 atmospheres produced a spherical core–shell nanostructure (30–35 nm), with perovskite Eu 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3 nanocrystal core-insulating oxide shell layer (~3 nm), presumed a pre-pyrochlore layer abundant with Eu 3+ . Fluorescence spectroscopy shows a high intensity 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition at 622 nm and strong red fluorescence. The core/shell structure demonstrated excellent capacitive properties: assembly into dielectric thin films gave low conductivity (2133 GΩ mm -1 ) and an extremely stable, low loss permittivity of ε eff ~25 over a wide frequency range (tan δ < 0.01, 100 kHz–2 MHz). Eu 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3 prepared under H 2 /argon produced more irregular shaped nanocrystals (20–25) nm, with a thin film permittivity around 4 times greater ( ε eff 101, tan δ < 0.05, 10 kHz–2 MHz, σ ~59.54 kΩ mm -1 ). Field-cooled magnetization values of 0.025 emu g -1 for EBTO-Air and 0.84 emu g -1 for EBTO-Argon were observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals a complex interplay of Eu II/III /Ti III/IV configurations which contribute to the observed ferroic and fluorescence behavior.

Investigating the dielectric properties of barium titanate nanocomposites using transmission electron microscopy image processing

Abstract Barium titanate (BTO) is a ferroelectric perovskite material used in energy storage applications because of its high dielectric constant. A previous study showed that the dielectric constant for BTO nanoparticles drastically increases to over 15,000 at a particle size of 70 nm. This result is highly contested, but its implications to energy storage motivated our investigation into the dielectric constants of BTO nanoparticles that are incorporated into a polymer matrix. We developed a novel method of using image processing techniques on transmission electron microscope images of BTO-polymer nanocomposites. Data on the positions, shapes, sizes, and orientations of BTO nanoparticles were used to build more realistic computational models that simulate the dielectric behavior of the nanocomposites. Here, we investigate the relationship between regions of enhanced electric field and the composite dielectric constant.

Interfacial Effects on the Dielectric Properties of Elastomer Composites and Nanocomposites

Elastomer-based composites and nanocomposites are discussed, with the emphasis on the filler and interfacial effects on their dynamics, and the resulting manifestation in their macroscopic dielectric or mechanical response. Specifically, selected polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/barium-titanate and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)/graphene oxide nanocomposites are discussed, as examples where controlled spatial distribution of filler (structured composites) gives rise to significantly different dielectric and thermomechanical behaviors. Also, ethylene–propylene–diene (EPDM)/carbon black (CB) composites are presented, as examples of systems that exhibit an abnormal temperature dependence of dielectric relaxation; and this response is discussed in the context of CB cluster polarization and quantified through a simple scaling model of the same. Finally, multi-filler EPDM/CB/ceramic elastomer nanocomposites are discussed, as examples of systems with antagonistic interfacial effects between conductive and dielectric fillers, as well as with strong interphase responses that can overwhelm the dielectric contributions from the fillers; in these systems, interphasial responses result in counter-intuitive dielectric behaviors and in strong deviations from standard design principles typically employed in the design of dielectric composite systems.

Microwave dielectric properties of LiNbO$_{\mathbf{3}}$ and AlN at millikelvin temperatures and single-photon power

Electro-optic materials are paramount to achieving efficient and reliable microwave-optical signal transduction in the quantum regime. It is of great interest to investigate the performance of these materials at the quantum level and at cryogenic temperatures to assess their compatibility with superconducting circuit-based quantum systems. In this work, we present a detailed study of the microwave electric properties of single-crystal bulk LiNbO$_{3}$ and AlN at millikelvin temperatures and at the single-photon level. We characterize the materials' dielectric loss tangent throughout a wide range of electromagnetic power levels in a temperature range from a few tens of millikelvin to above 1~K. Our findings indicate that both materials' loss tangent behavior is consistent with the two-level system model up to a certain power threshold, beyond which it increases logarithmically with power. This suggests that two-level system loss mechanisms dominate at the single-photon level, while additional loss channels become relevant at higher powers and temperatures.

Dielectric properties of neutron and proton irradiated polymeric nanocomposite insulation for superconducting magnets of fusion power plants

Studies on radiation-resistant electrical insulation for superconducting magnets of nuclear fusion power plants are discussed. Metal oxide nanoparticle-incorporated organic polymer composite (MONAP) insulation films were manufactured and studied for their dielectric breakdown strength after exposure to neutrons and proton radiation at varying levels. Samples with up to 5 wt% of nanoparticles (NPs) of SiO 2 , MgO, and ZrO 2 were studied. The samples were exposed to radiation of up to 2 × 10 16 neutrons/cm 2 and 200 Mrad of protons. The addition of the nanoparticles improved the radiation resistance of the MONAP, and the performance depended on the type of NPs and the radiation exposure. Dielectric breakdown measurements at 77 K showed little degradation. Enhancement of dielectric strength was observed in some instances.

High Strain Response and Dielectric Properties of Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 TiO 3 Ceramics Doped with (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) 4+

Environmentally friendly piezoceramics Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 Ti 1-x (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) x O 3 (BNKT-FN) with FeNb (FN) ratios 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were synthesized via conventional solid-state reaction (CSSR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the FN complexes were completely dissolved in BNKT perovskite and the structural transition occurred from ferroelectric to relaxor state. The average grain sizes for x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were found to be 0.34 μm, 0.35 μm, 0.38 μm, 0.32 μm and 0.39 μm, respectively. It is observed that the grain size increased with the addition of FN, except for x = 0.03. Here, the coercive field (E c ) and remnant polarization (P r ) of the system were decreased with increasing FN concentration and the highest E c of 21.1 kV/cm and P r of 29.2 μC/cm 2 were noted for the base pure sample. In addition, the increase of FN content steadily broadened the dielectric anomaly at maximum dielectric constant temperature (T m ) in the BNKT-FN system. Consequently, unipolar normalized strain (S max /E max ) was found to be enhanced monotonically achieving the highest value of around 654 pm/V (x = 0.02). These properties suggest that the investigated system could be a promising eco-friendly candidate for piezoelectric actuators and many other applications requiring high piezoelectric induced strain.
