Proton and deuteron double differential cross sections at angles from 10 deg to 60 deg from Be, C, Al, Fe, Cu, Ge, W, and Pb under 558-MeV-proton irradiation

The double differential cross sections for the production of protons and deuterons from targets of Be, C, Al, Fe, Cu, Ge, W, and Pb were obtained at laboratory angles of scatter of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 degrees for 558-MeV incident protons. The position of the quasi-elastic peak, discernible in the cross sections up to approximately 40 degrees, corresponded closely to the theoretical predictions for proton-proton elastic scattering at 558 MeV. The mean ratio of deuteron to proton energy-integrated cross sections was 0.056 + or - 0.008. The dependence of energy-integrated cross sections for both protons and deuterons on target mass number A varied from A to the 1/3 power at 10 degrees to A to the 2/3 power above approximately 30 degrees. The ratio of energy-integrated deuteron cross sections for quasielastic processes to that for reactions yielding a deuteron-pi-meson pair was approximately 10 percent.

Propagation of trans-equatorial deuteron whistlers in the low latitude topside ionosphere

The high latitude limit of transequatorial deuteron whistlers is found to occur at latitudes where B(m) = B/2, in which B is the local magnetic field at the satellite and B(m) is the minimum magnetic field on the field line through the satellite. The high latitude limit of transequatorial proton whistlers, often extends to the latitude where B(m) = B/4 in the autumn and winter. Transequatorial deuteron whistlers have a constant time interval for an echo train. The damping rate of the cyclotron resonant interaction with rare deuteron is large enough to generate deuteron whistlers. Ray tracing results for nonducted propagation of transequatorial deuteron whistlers show that rays are guided by the geomagnetic field within one degree in invariant latitude for several bounces between the two hemispheres.

Elastic scattering of deuterons by carbon

Deuteron-carbon elastic scattering is studied within the framework of the Glauber approximation. The full Glauber multiple scattering series is evaluated with simplified nuclear wave functions. An approximation in which deuteron-nucleus scattering is expressed in terms of nucleon-nucleus scattering amplitudes is shown to be accurate for small momentum transfers. The effects of the Coulomb field and the deuteron D state are investigated. The impressive fit to the 650 MeV d-(C-12) elastic scattering data, obtained in a recent calculation, is shown to be due to additional approximations made in that analysis.

Intermediate energy nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering

The adequacy of a multiple scattering description of nucleon-deuteron scattering at intermediate energy is examined. Although the multiple-scattering series is expected to converge slowly, model calculations indicate that the higher-order multiple-scattering terms contribute only to the low-order partial waves. The first two terms, nucleon exchange and single scattering, are assumed to describe the high-order partial waves completely. It is assumed that the deuteron is coupled only to the nucleon channel and that the internal structure is adequately defined by a nonrelativistic wave function.

Proton-deuteron double scattering

A simple but accurate form for the proton-deuteron elastic double scattering amplitude, which includes both projectile and target recoil motion and is applicable at all momentum transfer, is derived by taking advantage of the restricted range of Fermi momentum allowed by the deuteron wave function. This amplitude can be directly compared to approximations which have neglected target recoil or are limited to small momentum transfer; the target recoil and large momentum transfer effects are evaluated explicitly within the context of a Gaussian model.

Deuteron whistler and trans-equatorial propagation of the ion cyclotron whistler

The paper investigates two unusual types of ion cyclotron whistlers that were found in the low-latitude topside ionosphere by analyzing ISIS VLF electric-field data received at Kashima, Japan. One type is characterized by an asymptotic frequency equal to one half the local proton gyrofrequency; the asymptotic frequency of the other type corresponds to the minimum proton gyrofrequency along the geomagnetic field line passing through the satellite. The observations are compared with theoretical spectrograms of the ion cyclotron whistlers computed for appropriate model distributions of electrons and ions in the topside ionosphere. It is found that the whistlers with the asymptotic frequency of one half the local proton gyrofrequency are deuteron whistlers and that the other whistlers are due to the transequatorial propagation of proton or deuteron whistlers originating in the southern hemisphere.

Nucleon and deuteron scattering cross sections from 25 MV/Nucleon to 22.5 GeV/Nucleon

Within the context of a double-folding optical potential approximation to the exact nucleus-nucleus multiple-scattering series, eikonal scattering theory is used to generate tables of nucleon and deuteron total and absorption cross sections at kinetic energies between 25 MeV/nucleon and 22.5 GeV/nucleon for use in cosmic-ray transport and shielding studies. Comparisons of predictions for nucleon-nucleus and deuteron-nucleus absorption and total cross sections with experimental data are also made.

The reaction proton deuteron yields triton pion at 470 and 590 MeV

The preliminary results from a study of the deuteron (proton, positive pion)triton reaction are reported. The differential cross section for this reaction was measured for a number of center of mass angles from 37 deg to 160 deg at incident proton energies of 470 and 590 MeV. The cross sections measured at 590 MeV agree with predictions made considering a two-nucleon process. The 470 MeV data shows a peak in the backward direction which is not predicted by this mechanism.

Intermediate energy nucleon-deuteron scattering theory.

Sloan's conclusion (1969) that terms of the multiple-scattering series beyond single scattering contribute only to S- and P-wave amplitudes in an S-wave separable model is examined. A comparison of experiments with the calculation at 146 MeV shows that the conclusion is valid in nucleon-deuteron scattering applications.
