Asymptotics of transverse momentum broadening in dense QCD media

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the transverse momentum broadening distribution of an energetic quark or gluon propagating through dense QCD matter, in the large system size L L limit, taking into account radiative corrections in the double logarithmic approximation. Thanks to a connection between the evolution of the jet quenching parameter \hat{q} q ̂ and the formation of traveling wave fronts in nonlinear physics, we obtain a formula for the L L dependence of the characteristic transverse momentum scale Q_s Q s of the distribution valid up to terms of order 1/\ln(L) 1 / ln ( L ) . We briefly discuss the physical implications of this formula for jet quenching and small- x x phenomenology.

Jet charge modification in dense QCD matter

In these proceedings we report a recent calculation of the jet charge modification in heavy-ion relative to proton collisions at the LHC. Jets have played an essential role in constraining theories of in-medium parton shower evolution and in determining the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultra-relativistic nuclear reactions. It is important to extend these studies to flavor-tagged jets and explore observables that are sensitive to their partonic origin. The average jet charge, introduced early on in the history of quantum chromodynamics, is a proxy for the electric charge of the quark or gluon that initiates the jet. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, we show how to evaluate the jet charge in a dense strongly-interacting matter environments. We identify observables that can isolate the contribution of in-medium branching from isospin effects and present predictions for the transverse momentum dependence of the jet charge distribution in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its modification relative to the proton case.

Neural network reconstruction of the dense matter equation of state from neutron star observables

The Equation of State (EoS) of strongly interacting cold and hot ultra-dense QCD matter remains a major challenge in the field of nuclear astrophysics. With the advancements in measurements of neutron star masses, radii, and tidal deformabilities, from electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations, neutron stars play an important role in constraining the ultra-dense QCD matter EoS. Here, in this work, we present a novel method that exploits deep learning techniques to reconstruct the neutron star EoS from mass-radius (M-R) observations. We employ neural networks (NNs) to represent the EoS in a model-independent way, within the range of ~1-7 times the nuclear saturation density. The unsupervised Automatic Differentiation (AD) framework is implemented to optimize the EoS, so as to yield through TOV equations, an M-R curve that best fits the observations. We demonstrate that this method works by rebuilding the EoS on mock data, i.e., mass-radius pairs derived from a randomly generated polytropic EoS. The reconstructed EoS fits the mock data with reasonable accuracy, using just 11 mock M-R pairs observations, close to the current number of actual observations.

Large and massive neutron stars: Implications for the sound speed within QCD of dense matter

Here, the NASA telescope NICER has recently measured x-ray emissions from the heaviest of the precisely known two-solar mass neutron stars, PSR J0740 + 6620. Analysis of the data suggests that PSR J0740 + 6620 has a radius in the range of R 2.0 ≈ (11.4 – 16.1) km at the 68% credibility level. In this article, we study the implications of this analysis for the sound speed in the high-density inner cores by using recent chiral effective field theory (χEFT) calculations of the equation of state at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order to describe outer regions of the star at modest density. We find that the lower bound on the maximum speed of sound in the inner core, min {c$^{2}_{s,max}$}, increases rapidly with the radius of massive neutron stars. If χ EFT remains an efficient expansion for nuclear interactions up to about twice the nuclear saturation density, R 2.0 ≥ 13 km requires min {c$^{2}_{s,max}$} ≥ 0.562 and 0.442 at the 68% and 95% credibility level, respectively.

Universality aspects of quantum corrections to transverse momentum broadening in QCD media

We study non-linear quantum corrections to transverse momentum broadening (TMB) of a fast parton propagating in dense QCD matter in the leading logarithmic approximation. These non-local corrections yield an anomalous super-diffusive behavior characterized by a heavy tailed distribution which is associated with Lévy random walks. Using a formal analogy with the physics of traveling waves, we show that at late times the transverse momentum distribution tends to a universal scaling regime. We derive analytic solutions in terms of an asymptotic expansion around the scaling limit for both fixed and running coupling. We note that our analytic approach yields a good agreement with the exact numerical solutions down to realistic values of medium length. Finally, we discuss the interplay between system size and energy dependence of the diffusion coefficient $\hat{q}$ and its connection with the gluon distribution function that is manifest at large transverse momentum transfer.

Production of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays at high transverse momentum in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02 and 2.76 TeV

Measurements of the production of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 and 2.76 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported. The nuclear modification factor R AA at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is measured at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) as a function of transverse momentum p T in central, semi-central, and peripheral collisions over a wide p T interval, 3 < p T < 20 GeV/c, in which muons from beauty-hadron decays are expected to take over from charm as the dominant source at high p T (p T > 7 GeV/c). The R AA shows an increase of the suppression of the yields of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays with increasing centrality. A suppression by a factor of about three is observed in the 10% most central collisions. The R AA at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is similar to that at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. The precise R AA measurements have the potential to distinguish between model predictions implementing different mechanisms of parton energy loss in the high-density medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. They place important constraints for the understanding of the heavy-quark interaction with the hot and dense QCD medium.

Factorization for jet production in heavy-ion collisions

We develop an Effective Field Theory approach for jet observables in heavy-ion collisions, where the jet is treated as an open quantum system interacting with a hot and dense QCD medium. Within this framework, we derive a novel factorization formula for inclusive jet production, expressed as a series expansion with an increasing number of radiating subjet functions that encode forward scattering with the Quark-Gluon Plasma, convolved with perturbative matching coefficients. This work provides a systematic framework for computing jet observables at higher order and understanding their non-perturbative aspects, paving the way for future applications in heavy-ion phenomenology.

Measurement of substructure-dependent suppression of large-radius jets with charged particles in Pb+Pb collisions with ATLAS

Measurements of jet substructure in Pb+Pb collisions provide key insights into the mechanism of jet quenching in the hot and dense QCD medium created in these collisions. This Letter presents a measurement of the suppression of large-radius jets with a radius parameter of $R = 1.0$ and its dependence on the jet substructure. The measurement uses 1.72 nb$^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb data and 255 pb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ data, both at $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Large-radius jets are reconstructed by reclustering $R = 0.2$ calorimetric jets and are measured for transverse momentum above $200$ GeV. Jet substructure is evaluated using charged-particle tracks, and the overall level of jet suppression is quantified using the jet nuclear modification factor ($R_\mathrm{AA}$). The jet $R_\mathrm{AA}$ is measured as a function of jet $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, the charged $k_t$ splitting scale ($\sqrt{d_{12}}$), and the angular separation ($dR_{12}$) of two leading sub-jets. The jet $R_\mathrm{AA}$ gradually decreases with increasing $\sqrt{d_{12}}$, implying significantly stronger suppression of large-radius jets with larger $k_t$ splitting scale. The jet $R_\mathrm{AA}$ gradually decreases for $dR_{12}$ in the range $0.01{-}0.2$ and then remains consistent with a constant for $ΔR_{12} \gtrsim 0.2$. The observed significant dependence of jet suppression on the jet substructure will provide new insights into its role in the quenching process.

Quantum to classical parton evolution in the QGP

We study the time evolution of the density matrix of a high energy quark in the presence of a dense QCD background that is modeled as a stochastic Gaussian color field. At late times, we find that only the color singlet component of the quark’s reduced density matrix survives the in-medium evolution and that the density matrix becomes asymptotically diagonal in both transverse position and momentum spaces. In addition, we observe an accelerated entropy growth due to the larger phase space being explored by the quark and that the quantum and classical quark entropies converge at late times. We further observe that the quark state loses all memory of the initial condition. Combined with the fact that the reduced density matrix satisfies Boltzmann-diffusion transport, we conclude that the quark reduced density matrix can be interpreted as a classical phase space distribution.

Ultracompact hybrid stars consistent with multimessenger astrophysics

In this work, we consider the consequences of phase transition in dense QCD on the properties of compact stars and implications for the observational program in gravitational wave and x-ray astrophysics. The key underlying assumption of our modeling is a strong first-order phase transition past the point where the hadronic branch of compact stars reaches the two-solar mass limit. Furthermore, our analysis predicts ultracompact stars with very small radii—in the range of 6–9 km—living on compact star sequences that are entirely consistent with the current multimessenger data. We show that sequences featuring two-solar mass hadronic stars consistent with radio-pulsar observations are also consistent with the inferences of large radii for massive neutron stars by NICER x-ray observations of neutron stars and the small radii predicted by gravitational waves analysis of the binary neutron star inspiral event GW170817 for our models that feature a strong first-order QCD phase transition.

QCD Constraints on Isospin-Dense Matter and the Nuclear Equation of State

Understanding the behavior of dense hadronic matter is a central goal in nuclear physics as it governs the nature and dynamics of astrophysical objects such as supernovae and neutron stars. Because of the nonperturbative nature of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), little is known rigorously about hadronic matter in these extreme conditions. Here, lattice QCD calculations are used to compute thermodynamic quantities and the equation of state of QCD over a wide range of isospin chemical potentials with controlled systematic uncertainties. Agreement is seen with chiral perturbation theory when the chemical potential is small. Comparison to perturbative QCD at large chemical potential allows for an estimate of the gap in the superconducting phase, and this quantity is seen to agree with perturbative determinations. Since the partition function for an isospin chemical potential μ I bounds the partition function for a baryon chemical potential μ B = 3 μ I / 2 , these calculations also provide rigorous nonperturbative QCD bounds on the symmetric nuclear matter equation of state over a wide range of baryon densities for the first time. Nuclear Matter in 1 + 1 Dimensions

We review the solution of QCD in two spacetime dimensions. Following the analysis of Baluni, for a single flavor, the model can be analyzed using Abelian bosonization. The theory can be analyzed in strong coupling, when the quarks are much lighter than the gauge coupling. In this limit, the theory is given by a Luttinger liquid.
