Nanomanufacturing of Nanophononic Devices: Ultra-high ZT Thermoelectrics for Efficient Conversion of Waste Heat

Fabrication and Characterization Summary: For this program, the team fabricated and tested silicon thermoelectric test structures that experimentally demonstrated record thermal conductivity reduction (> 85 %) without changes in electrical properties (conductivity and Seebeck coefficient). We also demonstrated the highest ever reported energy conversion efficiency for silicon thermoelectric devices. The team developed a design for 1 cm 2 die with thousands of nanophononic metamaterial structures in the form of nanowalled membranes but were unable to solve all fabrication challenges before the end of the program. Multiple aspects of the design were submitted for patent protection. Primary challenges were related to silicon-on-insulator material quality and high-aspect-ratio etching.

Toward High Conversion Efficiency of Thermoelectric Modules through Synergistical Optimization of Layered Materials

Abstract Waste‐heat electricity generation using high‐efficiency solid‐state conversion technology can significantly decrease dependence on fossil fuels. Here, a synergistical optimization of layered half‐Heusler (hH) materials and module to improve thermoelectric conversion efficiency is reported. This is realized by manufacturing multiple thermoelectric materials with major compositional variations and temperature‐gradient‐coupled carrier distribution by one‐step spark plasma sintering. This strategy provides a solution to overcome the intrinsic concomitants of the conventional segmented architecture that only considers the matching of the figure of merit ( zT ) with the temperature gradient. The current design is dedicated to temperature‐gradient‐coupled resistivity and compatibility matching, optimum zT matching, and reducing contact resistance sources. By enhancing the quality factor of the materials by Sb‐vapor‐pressure‐induced annealing, a superior zT of 1.47 at 973 K is achieved for (Nb, Hf)FeSb hH alloys. Along with the low‐temperature high‐ zT hH alloys of (Nb, Ta, Ti, V)FeSb, the single stage layered hH modules are developed with efficiencies of ≈15.2% and ≈13.5% for the single‐leg and unicouple thermoelectric modules, respectively, under Δ T of 670 K. Therefore, this work has a transformative impact on the design and development of next‐generation thermoelectric generators for any thermoelectric material families.

Optically thin light-absorbers for increasing photochemical energy-conversion efficiencies

Photochemical energy conversion is more efficient when a single light-absorbing unit is split into multiple light-absorbing units (N) that are each 1/N as thick as the single light-absorbing unit and thus use the same amount of material as the single light-absorbing unit. For electrocatalytic parameters relevant to water electrolysis, the maximum efficiency for solar-to-fuel conversion from a 1.75 eV bandgap material increases from approximately 1% for a single light-absorbing unit to greater than 20% for 128 identical stacked light-absorbing units. Alterations in utilization of photons results in a better match of the light-absorber power output to the load of the chemical transformation and in the case of high-quality light-absorbers there is an added benefit from radiative coupling between the light-absorbing units via photon recycling.

Bandwidth extension and conversion efficiency improvements beyond phase matching limitations using cavity-enhanced OPCPA

The conversion efficiency and phase matching bandwidth of ultrafast optical parametric amplification (OPA) are constrained by the dispersion and nonlinear coefficient of the employed crystal as well as pulse shaping effects. In our work we show that an enhancement cavity resonant with the pump seeded at the full repetition rate of the pump laser can automatically reshape the small-signal gain in optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) to achieve close-to-optimal operation. This new method termed cavity-enhanced OPCPA or C-OPCPA significantly increases both the gain bandwidth and the conversion efficiency, in addition to boosting gain for high-repetition-rate amplification. The goal in C-OPCPA is to arrive at a condition of impedance matching at all temporal coordinates, such that, in the absence of linear losses, all the incident pump power is dissipated in the nonlinear loss element, i.e., converted to signal and idler. The use of a low finesse enhancement cavity resonant with a low average power (<1W) and a high repetition rate (78MHz) pump source is shown to achieve more than 50% conversion efficiency into signal and idler from the coupled pump in an optical parametric process, whereas an equivalent amount of pump power in a single-pass configuration leads to negligible conversion. Additionally, the gain bandwidth is extended by a factor of 3-4 beyond the phase-matching limit. Our empirical observations are corroborated by a numerical analysis of depletion optimizing the single-pass case, which assesses the underlying impedance matching that is responsible for the observed performance improvements.

Six-junction III–V solar cells with 47.1% conversion efficiency under 143 Suns concentration

Single-junction flat-plate terrestrial solar cells are fundamentally limited to about 30% solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency, but multiple junctions and concentrated light make much higher efficiencies practically achievable. Until now, four-junction III–V concentrator solar cells have demonstrated the highest solar conversion efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate 47.1% solar conversion efficiency using a monolithic, series-connected, six-junction inverted metamorphic structure operated under the direct spectrum at 143 Suns concentration. Furthermore, when tuned to the global spectrum, a variation of this structure achieves a 1-Sun global efficiency of 39.2%. Nearly optimal bandgaps for six junctions were fabricated using alloys of III–V semiconductors. To develop these junctions, it was necessary to minimize threading dislocations in lattice-mismatched III–V alloys, prevent phase segregation in metastable quaternary III–V alloys and understand dopant diffusion in complex structures. Further reduction of the series resistance within this structure could realistically enable efficiencies over 50%.

Laser-to-proton conversion efficiency studies for proton fast ignition

We assess the conversion efficiency from intense picosecond laser pulses to multi-MeV ion beams for a wide range of laser and target parameters, using 2D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. Scalings are addressed in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry, leaving out beam divergence. Then, we study the conversion efficiency into a narrow spatial band along the laser axis for flat and hemispherical targets in large-scale 2D simulations. Combining these findings allows us to calculate the energy requirements for ignition of a compressed ICF target with an intense proton beam in a fast-ignition scenario.

Significant improvement of conversion efficiency by passivation of low-angle grain boundaries in flexible low-cost single-crystal-like GaAs thin-film solar cells directly deposited on metal tape

We develop an easily implementable yet effective process to achieve high power conversion efficiency in newly-developed flexible single-crystal-like GaAs thin-film photovoltaic solar cells on cheap metal tape. We study various techniques on the fabricated devices to passivate the defect states associated with dangling bonds at low-angle grain boundaries (LA-GBs) existing in the single-crystal-like GaAs material. We report that sulfur by trioctylphosphine sulfide (TOP:S) solution treatment can partially but effectively passivate the defect states at the LA-GBs to increase all the solar cell performance parameters of open-circuit voltage VOC (33.2%), short-circuit current JSC (19.5%), and fill factor FF (25.8%), resulting in the improvement of the power conversion efficiency more than double. The material and device characterizations and numerical modeling are performed to propose a mechanism, also suggesting that the power conversion efficiency higher than 20%, which is an important target milestone in emerging solar cell technologies, can be achieved. This work presents the first effective passivation of the bulk defects in GaAs at the device level and can also offer a solution for other photonic and electronic devices using non-single-crystalline GaAs films for flexible electronics.

Green synthesis of cellulose formate and its efficient conversion into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production from cellulose is a hot topic, while the rigidity of cellulose limits its efficient conversion into HMF. Cellulose formate has exhibited the great potential for HMF production but it’s synthesis via direct formylation of cellulose in formic acid is difficult. We reported a green synthetic route of cellulose formate and its efficient conversion into HMF. Ball milled cellulose formate (BCF) was synthesized via ball milling followed by formylation in formic acid at 80 °C for 0.5 h. The structure of BCF was thoroughly characterized and BCF was subsequently converted to HMF catalyzed by AlCl3 and HCl in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H 2 O media. Results showed that ball milling of cellulose for 1–1.5 h efficiently deconstructed its crystallinity and degree of polymerization, boosting its further formylation and catalytic conversion. An overall 66.9% HMF yield from cellulose was achieved at 150 °C for 20 min using BCF derived from cellulose ball milled for 1.5 h as the substrate. BCF exhibits high reactivity toward HMF due to its excellent solubility and accessibility in DMSO-H 2 O media, and the release of formic acid in reaction further facilitates HMF production. BCF synthesized with different ball milling times shows different degrees of substitution of formyl groups, which could serve as an indicator and regulate the HMF production. The green synthesis of cellulose formate creates an efficient pathway for HMF production.

Conversion efficiency improvement of ELO GaAs solar cell, deposited on water soluble sacrificial buffer

Here, we demonstrate the improvement of power conversion efficiency of an epitaxially-lifted-off single junction GaAs solar cell deposited on a water-soluble sacrificial buffer architecture by introducing an additional germanium (Ge) interlayer between GaAs and the fluoride buffer. The epitaxial lift-off (ELO) technique has been extensively used to separate III-V device layers from their single crystal GaAs substrates. However, conventional ELO requires the use of concentrated hydrofluoric acid (HF) for extended times to etch out the sacrificial layer, subsequently degrading the surface roughness of the parent wafer. As a result, the wafer has to undergo expensive and intensive chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) processes, costing about 25% of a pristine 6-inch GaAs substrate. In our previous work, we demonstrated a method to eliminating the need for CMP post-processing by using water-assisted ELO (H 2 O-ELO). A water-soluble, 3-layer buffer architecture was developed using alkaline earth compounds. However, devices suffered low performance due to a high defect density in the GaAs active layers. A Ge interlayer was introduced to provide a more favorable surface energy for GaAs growth, which leads to an improvement of GaAs crystal quality. The Ge deposition conditions were optimized to achieve a high-quality Ge layer on triple-layer fluoride buffer. Single junction GaAs devices fabricated on Ge/(Ca,Sr)F 2 /BaF 2 /(Ca,Sr)F 2 showed improvement of solar cell performance parameters featuring increases in V oc by 23.7%, and fill factor (F.F.) by 4.9%, which results in an overall improvement of power conversion efficiency from 10.3% to 12.69%.

Conversion efficiency of soliton Kerr combs

We investigate the conversion efficiency (CE) of soliton modelocked Kerr frequency combs. Our analysis reveals three distinct scaling regimes of CE with the cavity free spectral range (FSR), which depends on the relative contributions of the coupling and propagation loss to the total cavity loss. Our measurements, for the case of critical coupling, verify our theoretical prediction over a range of FSRs and pump powers. Our numerical simulations also indicate that mode crossings have an adverse effect on the achievable CE. Our results indicate that microresonator combs operating with spacings in the electronically detectable regime are highly inefficient, which could have implications for integrated Kerr comb devices.

BiVO 4 –Liquid Junction Photovoltaic Cell with 0.2% Solar Energy Conversion Efficiency

BiVO 4 is an important photoanode material for water oxidation, but its photoelectrochemistry regarding the triiodide/iodide redox couple is not well understood. Here, we use a combination of open circuit potential measurements, photoelectrochemical scans, and liquid surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) to confirm that BiVO 4 /triiodide/iodide electrolyte contacts produce up to 0.55 V photovoltage under 23 mW/cm –2 illumination from a 470 nm LED. Inspired by these results, we construct FTO/BiVO 4 /KI(I 2 ) aq /Pt sandwich photoelectrochemical cells from electrochemically grown 0.5 × 0.5 cm 2 BiVO 4 and Mo-doped BiVO 4 films. Under AM 1.5 illumination, the devices have up to 0.22% energy conversion efficiency, 0.32 V photovoltage, and 1.8 mA cm –2 photocurrent. Based on SPS, hole transfer to iodide is sufficiently fast to prevent the competing water oxidation reaction. Mo doping increases the incident photon-to-current efficiency to up to 55% (at 425 nm under front illumination) by improving the BiVO 4 conductivity, but this comes at the expense of a lower photovoltage resulting from recombination at the Mo defects and a detrimental Schottky junction at the interface with FTO. Additional photovoltage losses are caused by the offset between the BiVO 4 valence band edge and the triiodide/iodide electrochemical potential and by electron back transfer to iodide at the FTO back contact (shunting). Overall, this work provides the first example of a BiVO 4 –liquid photovoltaic cell and an analysis of its limitations. Finally, even though the larger band gaps of metal oxides constrain their solar energy conversion efficiency, their transparency to visible light and deep valence bands makes them suitable for tandem photovoltaic devices.

Monolithic Two-Terminal All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells with Power Conversion Efficiency Exceeding 21%

Monolithic two-terminal (2-T) all-perovskite tandem solar cells are a promising candidate for the next generation solar cells with ultrahigh efficiency and low fabrication cost. Here, we report on the fabrication of 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells consisting of solution-processed wide-bandgap and low-bandgap perovskite subcells connected by a vacuum processed interconnection layer. We employed a bulk-passivation strategy to enlarge the grain size, increase carrier mobilities, reduce electronic disorder, and suppress trap-assisted recombination in the low bandgap mixed Sn-Pb perovskite films, which leads to improved performance of low bandgap perovskite solar cells with an absorber thickness over 750 nm. This advance in high-quality low-bandgap perovskite layers enables the fabrication of efficient 2-T all-perovskite solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of more than 21% and decent stability. Our approach provides a suitable pathway to realize ultra-high efficiency 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells.

Four–Terminal Perovskite–CdSeTe Tandem Solar Cells: From 25% toward 30% Power Conversion Efficiency and Beyond

Thin-film tandem photovoltaic (PV) technology has emerged as a promising avenue to enhance power conversion efficiency beyond the radiative efficiency limit of single-junction devices. Combining a tunable wide-bandgap perovskite cell with a commercially established narrow-bandgap cadmium selenium telluride (CdSeTe) cell in a comparatively easy-to-fabricate four-terminal (4-T) arrangement is a great step in that direction. Herein, the impact of the transparent back contact and the perovskite absorber bandgap on the performance of 4-T perovskite–CdSeTe tandem solar cells is investigated. 4-T perovskite–CdSeTe tandem device architecture with ≈25% efficiency is demonstrated and a feasible pathway is shown to improve the tandem efficiency to more than 30%. Furthermore, the results show that the integration of CdSeTe with perovskite in 4-T tandem PV configurations represents a significant advancement toward achieving higher efficiency and low-cost tandem PVs.

Chemometric modeling of power conversion efficiency of organic dyes in dye sensitized solar cells for the future renewable energy

The present study reports chemometric modeling of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using the biggest available data set till date which comprises around 1200 dyes covering 7 chemical classes. To extract the best structural features required for higher PCE, we have developed multiple partial least squares (PLS) quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models for the Triphenylamine, Phenothiazine, Indoline, Porphyrin, Coumarin, Carbazole and Diphenylamine chemical classes using descriptors derived from the best subset selection method followed by selection of best five models in each dataset based on the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values. The models were validated both internally and externally followed by the consensus predictions employing “Intelligent Consensus Predictor” tool to examine whether the quality of predictions can be improved with the “intelligent” selection of multiple PLS models. The quality of predictions for the respective external sets showed that the consensus models (CM) are better than the individual models (IM) in most of the cases. From the insights of the developed models, we concluded that attributes like a packed structure toward higher conductivity of electrons, auxiliary donor fragment of aromatic tertiary amines, number of thiophenes inducing the bathochromic shift and augmenting the absorption, presence of additional electron donors, enhancement of electron-donating abilities, number of non-aromatic conjugated C(sp 2 ) which helps as conjugation extension units to broaden the absorption and highly conjugated $π$-systems exert positive contributions to the PCE. On the contrary, features negatively contributing to PCE are the followings: fragments which lower the tendency of localized $π–π*$ transition, fragments related to larger volume and surface area of dyes along with hydrophobicity resulting in poor adhesion, fragment RC = N causing dye hydrolysis, steric hindrance for π electronic mobility, fragments enhancing polarity, etc. Finally, the identified features from the best QSPR model of the coumarin dataset was employed in designing of ten more efficient coumarin dyes (predicted %PCE ranging from 8.93 to 10.62) than the existing ones.

X-ray Conversion Efficiencies for Diffraction Experiments on Z

We have used a deep-depletion CCD camera in single-hit mode to measure X-ray conversion efficiencies with Z-Beamlet and Z-Petawatt. Z-Petawatt is superior to Z-Beamlet for X-rays harder than 10 keV. For diffraction samples with Z > 42, we likely require X-rays with 15 keV or higher photon energy (Z-Petawatt). We are developing a robust, reproducible setup for X-ray polycapillaries as a part for X-ray diffraction experiments (XRD).
