Blueprint: Open Worldwide Application Security Project Top 10 Common Weakness Enumerations for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment

This report categorizes the top 10 security weaknesses in electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) using a similar approach by the Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) Top 10, and it describes example exploitations, methods for prevention, and related common weakness enumerations (CWEs) for each category. The weaknesses listed in this report could lead to security issues or vulnerabilities in EVSE if they are exploited by an attacker to compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of a system. This report also recommends EVSE industry best practices and remediations for the identified weaknesses to use as guidelines for their secure products and systems.

Integrity Enhancing Protocols: Performance and Recommendations for Nuclear Systems

In today’s communication landscape there are multiple technologies and protocols used for communication between end devices. Within security paradigms for these protocols, integrity management is a common goal of system designers. Communication protocols focused on maintaining message integrity can provide assurance that some received data has not been altered or tampered with. While integrity is often coupled with confidentiality in protocol design, this analysis focuses on an evaluation of only integrity protocols. This report outlines various ways message integrity may be preserved with respect to high performance operational technology (OT) systems. It describes a series of experiments and an evaluation framework used to evaluate the performance of the identified integrity approaches regarding common system design goals. Finally, it addresses the testing environment utilized and closes the report with a summary of experimental results.

DER Cybersecurity Standards: Assessment and Gap Analysis

The purpose of this report is to share the comprehensive gap analysis of existing cybersecurity standards applicable to Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) within the electric power sector. This analysis aims to identify critical deficiencies in current standards, assess their alignment with industry needs, and provide actionable recommendations for enhancing cybersecurity measures. The scope encompasses various DER technologies, including solar, wind, energy storage, and hydrogen fuel cells, and emphasizes the significance of establishing robust cybersecurity frameworks and standards to safeguard these increasingly integrated systems. The report provides valuable insights for stakeholders in the DER ecosystem, including manufacturers, utilities, and regulators. It underscores the importance of continued development and refinement of cybersecurity standards to keep up with the technical advances in DERs and associated cybersecurity challenges. The analysis evaluated IEC, IEEE, ISA, ISO, and UL standards relevant to DER cybersecurity. Standards were assessed on their coverage of key requirements including data availability, integrity, confidentiality, access control, authentication, encryption, and system hardening. For each standard, the analysis assessed its alignment with current industry practices, regulatory compliance, effectiveness in addressing known risks, coverage of emerging risks, and how it promotes interoperability. The evaluation also considered potential integration challenges and barriers to adoption.
