Virtual reality for automotive design evaluation

A general description of Virtual Reality technology and possible applications was given from publicly available material. A video tape was shown demonstrating the use of multiple large-screen stereoscopic displays, configured in a 10' x 10' x 10' room, to allow a person to evaluate and interact with a vehicle which exists only as mathematical data, and is made only of light. The correct viewpoint of the vehicle is maintained by tracking special glasses worn by the subject. Interior illumination was changed by moving a virtual light around by hand; interior colors are changed by pointing at a color on a color palette, then pointing at the desired surface to change. We concluded by discussing research needed to move this technology forward.

Remote Sensing of Dipole Rings

Historical satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) data are reanalyzed with a zebra color palette and a thermal separatrix method. The new results from this reanalysis are as follows: (a) Thirteen observational sequences of six rings from the Gulf Stream and the Brazil Current, which have historically been interpreted as solitary vortices or monopoles are shown to have a dipolar character; (b) some of these dipole rings have been observed in the open ocean, thereby eliminating the possibility that they are sustained by topographic interactions with the continental slope; (c) whether interacting with other features or evolving as isolated circulations, dipoles are seen to rotate within a relatively narrow range of approximately 4-8 deg/day (interacting) and 10-11 deg/day (isolated); and (d) feature tracking delineates energetic fluid in both vortices and eliminates the possibility of interpreting dipole rings as transient features produced by active monopoles and patches of entrained fluid.

Improving AIRS NRT Imagery for the Enhancement of Visualization Services in LANCE

The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) has been the home of processing, archiving, and distribution services for data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) mission since its launch in 2002. AIRS provides data enabling global observations of the atmospheric state. The GES DISC provides service to both AIRS standard products and Near Real-time (NRT) products. The AIRS NRT product is one important element in the Land, Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE). The LANCE processing of the AIRS NRT product and the generation of the imagery are performed at the GES DISC. The AIRS NRT imagery are generated by mosaicking and mapping the available AIRS 6-minute retrieval granules to a global cylindrical projection. The images are constantly refreshed when new granules are produced. The AIRS NRT Viewer and LANCE Worldview provide visualization services to online users for AIRS NRT imagery. The imagery include atmospheric temperature, humidity, precipitation, Dust Score, CO, and SO2. The AIRS Applications Development Team at NASA JPL developed a new orbit-based algorithm and software to improve the AIRS NRT imagery. The GES DISC is collaborating with the AIRS Applications Development Team for the implementation of the new algorithm and software. The improvements include image quality, new color palettes, and variable changes. In this presentation, we will detail the improvements and demonstrate visualization of the new imagery.

Using NASA's Worldview to Convey Scientific Finding

NASA Worldview is an interactive interface for browsing full-resolution, global satellite imagery. The application can show single or multiple layers of satellite imagery with over 700 layers available. Each layer has options such as opacity and color palettes which can be adjusted to differentiate layers or underlying data values. The timeline feature allows end-users to study historical events: changes over time can be visualized using the animation tool and exported to animated GIFs. Users can even compare two separate days using the A|B comparison feature. Every time the state of the application changes, it is saved in the URL making it easy to share findings with others. The application is accessible online for anyone to use at any time and the source code is available on GitHub.com. The Worldview source code was designed to be customizable allowing end users to turn on/off features and brand the application for their specific use case. Worldview has code contributors and end-users from all over the world who use the official tool and create personal instances to test and convey their own data. From a team of scientists studying weather over the Philippines, to a group in France studying high environmental risks, Worldview's features and portability allows end-users all over the World to gain valuable earth science insights in a multitude of ways. This presentation will emphasis how end-users are using Worldview to convey their findings.

A color graphics environment in support of supercomputer systems

An initial step in the integration of an upgrade of a VPS-32 supercomputer to 16 million 64-bit words, to be closely followed by a further upgrade to 32 million words, was to develop a graphics language commonality with other computers at the Langley Center. The power of the upgraded supercomputer is to users at individual workstations, who will aid in defining the direction for future expansions in both graphics software and workstation requirements for the supercomputers. The LAN used is an ETHERNET configuration featuring both CYBER mainframe and PDP 11/34 image generator computers. The system includes a film recorder for image production in slide, CRT, 16 mm film, 35 mm film or polaroid film images. The workstations have screen resolutions of 1024 x 1024 with each pixel being one of 256 colors selected from a palette of 16 million colors. Each screen can have up to 8 windows open at a time, and is driven by a MC68000 microprocessor drawing on 4.5 Mb RAM, a 40 Mb hard disk and two floppy drives. Input is from a keyboard, digitizer pad, joystick or light pen. The system now allows researchers to view computed results in video time before printing out selected data.

Graphics-Printing Program For The HP Paintjet Printer

IMPRINT utility computer program developed to print graphics specified in raster files by use of Hewlett-Packard Paintjet(TM) color printer. Reads bit-mapped images from files on UNIX-based graphics workstation and prints out three different types of images: wire-frame images, solid-color images, and gray-scale images. Wire-frame images are in continuous tone or, in case of low resolution, in random gray scale. In case of color images, IMPRINT also prints by use of default palette of solid colors. Written in C language.
