Visualizing conical intersection passages via vibronic coherence maps generated by stimulated ultrafast X-ray Raman signals

Significance The capabilities of modern X-ray sources have substantially increased the temporal and spectral resolutions for the observation of elementary molecular events. Theoretically, it has been shown that these unique features can be exploited to probe vibronic coherences that emerge when molecules pass through conical intersections. Here, we demonstrate this technique for the photorelaxation of the RNA-nucleobase uracil after UV excitation. The generated coherence maps reveal the path of the nuclear wavepacket on the excited-state surface in the vicinity of the conical intersection. This information is directly accessible from the spectroscopically recorded signal. Being transferrable to other molecules, these coherence maps will provide detailed visualizations of other nonadiabatic passages in the future.

Coherence mapping to identify the intermediates of multi-channel dissociative ionization

Identifying the short-lived intermediates and reaction mechanisms of multi-channel radical cation fragmentation processes remains a current and important challenge to understanding and predicting mass spectra. We find that coherent oscillations in the femtosecond time-dependent yields of several product ions following ultrafast strong-field ionization represent spectroscopic signatures that elucidate their mechanism of formation and identify the intermediate(s) they originate from. Experiments on endo-dicyclopentadiene show that vibrational frequencies from various intermediates are mapped onto their resulting products. Aided by ab initio methods, we identify the vibrational modes of both the cleaved and intact molecular ion intermediates. These results confirm stepwise and concerted fragmentation pathways of the dicyclopentadiene ion. This study highlights the power of tracking the femtosecond dynamics of all product ions simultaneously and sheds further light onto one of the fundamental reaction mechanisms in mass spectrometry, the retro-Diels Alder reaction.

Optical quantum memory for noble-gas spins based on spin-exchange collisions

Optical quantum memories, which store and preserve the quantum state of photons, rely on a coherent mapping of the photonic state onto matter states that are optically accessible. Here we outline and characterize schemes to map the state of photons onto long-lived but optically inaccessible collective states of noble-gas spins. The mapping employs coherent spin-exchange interaction arising from random collisions with alkali vapor. We propose efficient storage strategies in two operating regimes and analyze their performance for several proposed experimental configurations.

Towards full surface Brillouin zone mapping by coherent multi-photon photoemission

Abstract We report a novel approach for coherent multi-photon photoemission in the entire Brillouin zone with infrared light that is readily implemented in a laboratory setting. We excite a solid state material, Ag(110), with intense femtosecond laser pulses to excite higher-order multi-photon photoemission; angle-resolved electron spectroscopic acquisition records photoemission at large in-plane momenta involving optical transitions from the occupied to unoccupied bands of the sample that otherwise might remain hidden by the photoemission horizon. We propose this as a complementary ultrafast method to time- and angle-resolved two-color, e.g. infrared pump and extreme ultraviolet probe, photoemission spectroscopy, with the advantage of being able to measure and control the coherent electron dynamics.

Damage Proxy Map from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Coherence

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture provide the ability to generate a damage proxy map. A master coherence map and a slave coherence map, for an area prior and subsequent to (including) a damage event are obtained. The slave coherence map is registered to the master coherence map. Pixel values of the slave coherence map are modified using histogram matching to provide a first histogram of the master coherence map that exactly matches a second histogram of the slave coherence map. A coherence difference between the slave coherence map and the master coherence map is computed to produce a damage proxy map. The damage proxy map is displayed with the coherence difference displayed in a visually distinguishable manner.

Atomic fluctuations in electronic materials revealed by dephasing

The microscopic origin and timescale of the fluctuations of the energies of electronic states has a significant impact on the properties of interest of electronic materials, with implication in fields ranging from photovoltaic devices to quantum information processing. Spectroscopic investigations of coherent dynamics provide a direct measurement of electronic fluctuations. Modern multidimensional spectroscopy techniques allow the mapping of coherent processes along multiple time or frequency axes and thus allow unprecedented discrimination between different sources of electronic dephasing. Exploiting modern abilities in coherence mapping in both amplitude and phase, we unravel dissipative processes of electronic coherences in the model system of CdSe quantum dots (QDs). The method allows the assignment of the nature of the observed coherence as vibrational or electronic. The expected coherence maps are obtained for the coherent longitudinal optical (LO) phonon, which serves as an internal standard and confirms the sensitivity of the technique. Fast dephasing is observed between the first two exciton states, despite their shared electron state and common environment. This result is contrary to predictions of the standard effective mass model for these materials, in which the exciton levels are strongly correlated through a common size dependence. In contrast, the experiment is in agreement with ab initio molecular dynamics of a single QD. Electronic dephasing in these materials is thus dominated by the realistic electronic structure arising from fluctuations at the atomic level rather than static size distribution. The analysis of electronic dephasing thereby uniquely enables the study of electronic fluctuations in complex materials.

Quantum optical memory for entanglement distribution

Optical photons are powerful carriers of quantum information, which can be delivered in free space by satellites or in fibers on the ground over long distances. Entanglement of quantum states over long distances can empower quantum computing, quantum communications, and quantum sensing. Quantum optical memories are devices designed to store quantum information in the form of stationary excitations, such as atomic coherence, and are capable of coherently mapping these excitations to flying qubits. Quantum memories can effectively store and manipulate quantum states, making them indispensable elements in future long-distance quantum networks. Over the past two decades, quantum optical memories with high fidelities, high efficiencies, long storage times, and promising multiplexing capabilities have been developed, especially at the single-photon level. In this review, we introduce the working principles of commonly used quantum memory protocols and summarize the recent advances in quantum memory demonstrations. We also offer a vision for future quantum optical memory devices that may enable entanglement distribution over long distances.

Coherent focal volume mapping of a CW CO2 Doppler lidar

In this paper, the coherent response to a 100-micron diam spinning wire is determined as a function of its position within the focal volume of a 10.6-micron coherent Doppler lidar, and SNR contours are generated, both transverse to and along the system line of sight. Application of the contours to single-particle scattering is discussed.

High-fidelity entanglement and coherent multi-qubit mapping in an atom array

Neutral atoms in optical tweezer arrays possess broad applicability for quantum technologies, such as computing, analogue simulation and metrology. The atomic species ytterbium-171 is able to host multiple types of qubits, making it a strong candidate for bridging various applications of tweezer arrays. Realizing this potential requires high-fidelity generation and transfer of many-body entanglement between these distinct qubit degrees of freedom. Here, in this study, we demonstrate the creation and coherent mapping of entangled quantum states across multiple qubits in ytterbium-171 tweezer arrays. We map entangled states onto the optical clock qubit from the nuclear spin qubit or the Rydberg qubit. We coherently transfer Z 2 -ordered Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger states of up to 20 atoms from the interacting Rydberg manifold to the metastable nuclear spin manifold. Furthermore, we find that clock-qubit-based spin detection, when applied to Rydberg and nuclear spin qubits, facilitates atom-loss-detectable qubit measurements and Rydberg decay detection. This enables delayed-erasure detection, yielding an error-detected two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.78(4)% in metastable qubits. These results establish a versatile architecture that advances multiple fields of quantum information science while also establishing bridges between them.

Rapid and Reliable Damage Proxy Map from InSAR Coherence

Future radar satellites will visit SoCal within a day after a disaster event. Data acquisition latency in 2015-2020 is 8 to approx. 15 hours. Data transfer latency that often involves human/agency intervention far exceeds the data acquisition latency. Need interagency cooperation to establish automatic pipeline for data transfer. The algorithm is tested with ALOS PALSAR data of Pasadena, California. Quantitative quality assessment is being pursued: Meeting with Pasadena City Hall computer engineers for a complete list of demolition/construction project 1. Estimate the probability of detection and probability of false alarm 2. Estimate the optimal threshold value.

Polarization-resolved core exciton dynamics in LiF using attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy

The ability to control absorption by modifying the polarization of light presents an exciting opportunity to experimentally determine the orbital alignment of absorption features. Here, attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate the polarization dependence of core exciton dynamics in LiF thin films at the Li + K edge. XUV pulses excite electrons from the Li 1s core level into the conduction band, allowing for the formation of a p-orbital-like core exciton, aligned along the XUV light polarization axis. A sub-5 fs near-infrared (NIR) probe pulse then arrives at variable time delays, perturbing the XUV-excited states and allowing the coherence decay of the core exciton to be mapped. The coherence lifetimes are found to be ≈ 2.4 ± 0.4 fs, which is attributed to a phonon-mediated dephasing mechanism as in previous core exciton studies. The differential absorption features are also shown to be sensitive to the relative polarization of the XUV and NIR fields. The parallel NIR probe induces couplings between the initial XUV-excited p-like bright exciton and s-like dark excitons. When crossed pump and probe polarizations are used, the coupling between the bright and dark states is no longer dipole-allowed, and the transient absorption signal associated with the coupling is suppressed by approximately 90%. This interpretation is supported by simulations of a few-level model system, as well as analysis of the calculated band structure. Here, the results indicate that laser polarization can serve as a powerful experimental tool for exploring the orbital alignment of core excitonic states in solid-state materials.

Linear systematics mitigation in galaxy clustering in the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 Data

ABSTRACT We implement a linear model for mitigating the effect of observing conditions and other sources of contamination in galaxy clustering analyses. Our treatment improves upon the fiducial systematics treatment of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 (Y1) cosmology analysis in four crucial ways. Specifically, our treatment (1) does not require decisions as to which observable systematics are significant and which are not, allowing for the possibility of multiple maps adding coherently to give rise to significant bias even if no single map leads to a significant bias by itself, (2) characterizes both the statistical and systematic uncertainty in our mitigation procedure, allowing us to propagate said uncertainties into the reported cosmological constraints, (3) explicitly exploits the full spatial structure of the galaxy density field to differentiate between cosmology-sourced and systematics-sourced fluctuations within the galaxy density field, and (4) is fully automated, and can therefore be trivially applied to any data set. The updated correlation function for the DES Y1 redMaGiC catalogue minimally impacts the cosmological posteriors from that analysis. Encouragingly, our analysis does improve the goodness-of-fit statistic of the DES Y1 3 × 2pt data set (Δχ2 = −6.5 with no additional parameters). This improvement is due in nearly equal parts to both the change in the correlation function and the added statistical and systematic uncertainties associated with our method. We expect the difference in mitigation techniques to become more important in future work as the size of cosmological data sets grows.

Mapping high-latitude plasma convection with coherent HF radars

Several methods developed for mapping high-latitude plasma convection with a high-latitude HF radar are described, which utilize coherent backscatter from electron density irregularities at F-region altitudes to observe convective plasma motion. Several examples of two-dimensional convection-velocity maps are presented, showing instances of L-shell-aligned flow in the dusk sector, the reversal of convection near magnetic midnight, and counterstreaming in the dayside cleft.

Mangrove Mapping With the Freeman-Durden Polarimetric Decomposition and InSAR Coherence From ALOS-2

We map mangrove extents in Pongara National Park, Gabon using the Freeman-Durden Decomposition and InSAR Coherence derived from ALOS-2 imagery. Specifically, we obtain a land cover map derived from both this polarimetric decomposition and a 14-day repeat-pass coherence. Our classification model and results are highly interpretable based on a depth 2 decision tree. We further illustrate the correlation between InSAR coherence and height obtaining rough mangrove height estimates from TanDEM-X data. From our results, we observe that repeat-pass interferometric coherence provides invaluable information about mangrove extents and coastal forests. The clear identification of mangrove extents presents a significant opportunity for NISAR, which will provide 12-day repeat pass images over coastal areas globally.
