A new statistic for the analysis of circular data in gamma-ray astronomy

A new statistic is proposed for the analysis of circular data. The statistic is designed specifically for situations where a test of uniformity is required which is powerful against alternatives in which a small fraction of the observations is grouped in a small range of directions, or phases.

Formulas for the Stress Analysis of Circular Rings in a Monocoque Fuselage

The formulas given in this report provide a simplified method for the stress-analysis of fuselage bulkheads that are approximately circular rings of uniform cross section. Complicated load systems acting on a ring can usually be resolved into simplified load systems; and formulas for moment, axial force, and shear for such simplified load systems are given in this report. Illustrative examples showing the use of this method in practical stress-analysis work are also included.

Stress analysis of circular semimonocoque cylinders with cutouts by a perturbation load technique

A method is presented for analyzing the stresses about a cutout in a circular cylinder of semimonocoque construction. The method involves the use of so-called perturbation solutions which are superposed on the stress distribution that would exist in the structure with no cutout in such a way as to give the effects of a cutout. The method can be used for any loading case for which the structure without the cutout can be analyzed and is sufficiently versatile to account for stringer and shear reinforcement about the cutout. Stress analysis of circular semimonocoque cylinders with cutouts

A method is presented for analyzing the stresses about cutouts in circular semimonocoque cylinders with flexible rings. The method involves the use of so-called perturbation stress distributions which are superposed on the stress distribution that would exist in the structure with no cutout in such a way as to give the effects of a cutout. The method can be used for any loading case for which the structure without the cutout can be analyzed and is sufficiently versatile to account for stringer and shear reinforcement about the cutout.

Stress Analysis of Circular Frames

The stresses in circular frames of constant bending stiffnesses, as encountered in thin-wall shells, are investigated from the point of view of finite depth of sectional area of frame. The solution is carried out for four fundamental load conditions. The method is illustrated on a worked out example.

Modal analysis applied to circular, rectangular, and coaxial waveguides

Recent developments in the analysis of various waveguide components and feedhorns using Modal Analysis (Mode Matching Method) are summarized. A brief description of the theory is presented, and the important features of the method are pointed out. Specific examples in circular, rectangular, and coaxial waveguides are included, with comparisons between the theory and experimental measurements. Extensions to the methods are described.

Analysis of a Circular Composite Disk Subjected to Edge Rotations and Hydrostatic Pressure

The structural analysis results for a graphite/epoxy quasi-isotropic circular plate subjected to a forced rotation at the boundary and pressure is presented. The analysis is to support a specialized material characterization test for composite cryogenic tanks. Finite element models were used to ensure panel integrity and determine the pressure necessary to achieve a predetermined equal biaxial strain value. The displacement results due to the forced rotation at the boundary led to a detailed study of the bending stiffness matrix [D]. The variation of the bending stiffness terms as a function of angular position is presented graphically, as well as, an illustrative technique of considering the laminate as an I-beam.

Linear and circular digital spectral analysis of serial data

Two methods of digital spectral analysis of unevenly sampled data are developed and illustrated here. One method uses a linear function of time (or space), the other uses circular functions. The circular method turns out to be essentially equivalent to a least-squares sine-wave analysis. The linear, anharmonic method uses only the field of real numbers and elementary algebraic operations, and hence it can be made computationally very fast and accurate. Both methods are very general, properly handling all kinds of time series ranging from simple series consisting only of the times of events to complicated series consisting of pulses with long duty cycles. The two methods are here applied to the analysis of annual mean relative sunspot numbers.

Analysis and closed-form solutions of circular and rectangular apertures in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide

An analysis is carried out to determine the discontinuity susceptance of a circular or rectangular aperture in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide. Closed-form solutions based on the scattered amplitude calculation and aperture coupling theory are derived. Example solutions for a small circular aperture and a resonant rectangular aperture are given. The calculated results agree very well with the experiments. The results have many applications in the design of circular waveguide components and circular waveguide-backed aperture antennas.

Analysis of A Circular, Cylindrical Shell Loaded as A Simple Cantilever

The stresses and deflections in a circular, cylindrical shell loaded at each end by a force and moment applied through rigid rings are presented. The shell may be stiffened by additional rings, and it is assumed that rapid changes in stress and deflection occur only in the axial direction in the immediate vicinity of a ring.

Three-dimensional elastic stress and displacement analysis of finite circular geometry solids containing cracks

A seminumerical method is presented for solving a set of coupled partial differential equations subject to mixed and coupled boundary conditions. The use of this method is illustrated by obtaining solutions for two circular geometry and mixed boundary value problems in three-dimensional elasticity. Stress and displacement distributions are calculated in an axisymmetric, circular bar of finite dimensions containing a penny-shaped crack. Approximate results for an annular plate containing internal surface cracks are also presented.
