Stimulated Nucleation of Skyrmions in a Centrosymmetric Magnet

Understanding the dynamics of skyrmion nucleation and manipulation is important for applications in spintronic devices. In this contribution, the spin textures at magnetic domain-boundaries stimulated by application of in-plane magnetic fields in a centrosymmetric kagome ferromagnet, Fe 3 Sn 2 , with thickness gradient are investigated using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Switching of the in-plane magnetic field is shown to induce a reversible transformation from magnetic stripes to skyrmions, or vice versa, at the interface between differently oriented domains. Micromagnetic simulations combined with experiments reveal that the rotatable anisotropy and thickness dependence of the response to the external in-plane field are the critical factors for the skyrmion formation. In addition, it is shown that the helicity of skyrmions can also be controlled using this dynamic process. Finally, the results suggest that magnetic materials with rotatable anisotropy are potential skyrmionic systems and provides a different approach for nucleation and manipulation of skyrmions in spintronic devices.

Magnetic vortex control with current-induced axial magnetization in centrosymmetric Weyl materials

We consider magnetic Weyl metals as a platform to achieve current control of magnetization textures with transport currents utilizing their underlying band geometry. We show that the transport current in a Weyl semimetal produces an axial magnetization due to orbital magnetic moments of the Weyl electrons. The associated axial magnetization can generate a torque acting on the localized magnetic moments. For the case of a magnetic vortex in a nanodisk of Weyl materials, this current-induced torque can be used to reverse its circulation and polarity. We discuss the axial magnetization torques in Weyl metals on general symmetry grounds and compare their strength to current-induced torques in more conventional materials.

Fermi Surface Nesting Driving the RKKY Interaction in the Centrosymmetric Skyrmion Magnet Gd 2 PdSi 3

The magnetic skyrmions generated in a centrosymmetric crystal were recently first discovered in Gd 2 PdSi 3 . In light of this, we observe the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and unveil its direct relationship with the magnetism in this compound. The Fermi surface and band dispersions are demonstrated to have a good agreement with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations carried out with careful consideration of the crystal superstructure. Most importantly, we find that the three-dimensional Fermi surface has extended nesting which matches well the q vector of the magnetic order detected by recent scattering measurements. Finally, the consistency we find among ARPES, DFT, and the scattering measurements suggests the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction involving itinerant electrons to be the formation mechanism of skyrmions in Gd 2 PdSi 3 .

Zoology of Multiple- Q Spin Textures in a Centrosymmetric Tetragonal Magnet with Itinerant Electrons

Magnetic skyrmion is a topologically stable particle-like swirling spin texture potentially suitable for high-density information bit, which was first observed in noncentrosymmetric magnets with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. Recently, nanometric skyrmion has also been discovered in centrosymmetric rare-earth compounds, and the identification of their skyrmion formation mechanism and further search of nontrivial spin textures are highly demanded. Here, magnetic structures in a prototypical skyrmion-hosting centrosymmetric tetragonal magnet GdRu2Si2 is exhaustively studied by performing the resonant X-ray scattering experiments. A rich variety of double-Q magnetic structures, including the antiferroic order of meron(half-skyrmion)/anti-meron-like textures with fractional local topological charges are identified. The observed intricate magnetic phase diagram is successfully reproduced by the theoretical framework considering the four-spin interaction mediated by itinerant electrons and magnetic anisotropy. The present results will contribute to the better understanding of the novel skyrmion formation mechanism in this centrosymmetric rare-earth compound, and suggest that itinerant electrons can ubiquitously host a variety of unique multiple-Q spin orders in a simple crystal lattice system.

Periodicity staircase in a centrosymmetric Fe/Gd magnetic thin film system

Abstract The presence of multiple competing periodicities may result in a system to go through states with modulated periodicities, an example of which is the self-similar staircase-like structure called the Devil’s Staircase. Herein we report on a novel staircase structure of domain periodicity in an amorphous and centrosymmetric Fe/Gd magnetic thin film system wherein the reciprocal space wavevector Q due to the ordered stripe domains does not evolve continuously, rather exhibits a staircase structure. Resonant X-ray scattering experiments show jumps in the periodicity of the stripe domains as a function of an external magnetic field. When resolved in components, the length-scale step change along Q x was found to be an integral multiple of a minimum step height of 7 nm, which resembles closely to the exchange length of the system. Modeling the magnetic texture in the Fe/Gd system as an achiral spin arrangement, we have been able to reproduce the steps in the magnetization using a Landau-Lifshitz spin dynamics calculation. Our results indicate that anisotropy and not the dipolar interaction is the dominant cause for the staircase pattern, thereby revealing the effect of achiral magnetism.

Meron, skyrmion, and vortex crystals in centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets

The recent experimental confirmation of a transformation between meron and skyrmion topological spin textures in the chiral magnet Co 8 Zn 9 Mn 3 confirms that the skyrmion crystals discovered in 2009 are just the tip of the iceberg. Crystals of topological textures, including skyrmions, merons, vortices, and monopoles, can be stabilized by combining simple physical ingredients, such as lattice symmetry, frustration, and spin anisotropy. The current challenge is to find the combinations of these ingredients that produce specific topological spin textures. In this work, we report a simple mechanism for the stabilization of meron, skyrmion, and vortex crystals in centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets. In particular, the meron/skyrmion crystals can form even in absence of magnetic field. The application of magnetic field leads to a rich variety of topological spin textures that survive in the long wavelength limit of the theory. When conduction electrons are coupled to the spins, these topological spin textures twist the electronic wave functions to induce Chern insulators and Weyl semimetals for specific band filling fractions.

Pseudogap and Fermi arc induced by Fermi surface nesting in a centrosymmetric skyrmion magnet

Skyrmions in noncentrosymmetric materials are believed to occur due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. By contrast, the skyrmion formation mechanism in centrosymmetric materials remains elusive. Here, in this work, we reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of the centrosymmetric GdRu 2 Si 2 by selectively measuring magnetic domains using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We found robust Fermi surface (FS) nesting, consistent with the magnetic modulation q -vector detected by the previous resonant x-ray scattering measurements. The pseudogap opens at the nested FS portions, which vary for different magnetic domains. The anomalous pseudogap disconnects the FS to generate Fermi arcs with twofold symmetry. These results indicate that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction plays a decisive role in generating the screw spin modulation responsible for the skyrmion formation in GdRu 2 Si 2 . Furthermore, we demonstrate the flexible nature of magnetism in GdRu 2 Si 2 by manipulating magnetic domains with magnetic field and temperature cyclings, providing potential future applications for data storage and processing devices.

Observation of Weyl fermions in a magnetic non-centrosymmetric crystal

The absence of inversion symmetry in non-centrosymmetric materials has a fundamental role in the emergence of a vast number of fascinating phenomena, like ferroelectricity, second harmonic generation, and Weyl fermions. The removal of time-reversal symmetry in such systems further extends the variety of observable magneto-electric and topological effects. Here we report the striking topological properties in the non-centrosymmetric spin-orbit magnet PrAlGe by combining spectroscopy and transport measurements. By photoemission spectroscopy below the Curie temperature, we observe topological Fermi arcs that correspond to projected topological charges of ±1 in the surface Brillouin zone. In the bulk, we observe the linear energy-dispersion of the Weyl fermions. We further observe a large anomalous Hall response in our magneto-transport measurements, which is understood to arise from diverging bulk Berry curvature fields associated with the Weyl band structure. These results establish a novel Weyl semimetal phase in magnetic non-centrosymmetric PrAlGe.

Squeezing the periodicity of Néel-type magnetic modulations by enhanced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction of 4d electrons

In polar magnets, such as GaV 4 S 8 , GaV 4 Se 8 and VOSe 2 O 5 , modulated magnetic phases namely the cycloidal and the Néel-type skyrmion lattice states were identified over extended temperature ranges, even down to zero Kelvin. Our combined small-angle neutron scattering and magnetization study shows the robustness of the Néel-type magnetic modulations also against magnetic fields up to 2 T in the polar GaMo 4 S 8 . In addition to the large upper critical field, enhanced spin-orbit coupling stabilize cycloidal, Néel skyrmion lattice phases with sub-10 nm periodicity and a peculiar distribution of the magnetic modulation vectors. Moreover, we detected an additional single-q state not observed in any other polar magnets. Thus, our work demonstrates that non-centrosymmetric magnets with 4d and 5d electron systems may give rise to various highly compressed modulated states.

Electric Field Control of Magnetic Skyrmion Helicity in a Centrosymmetric 2D van der Waals Magnet

Two-dimensional van der Waals magnets hosting topological magnetic textures, such as skyrmions, show promise for spintronics and quantum computing. Electrical control of these topological spin textures is crucial for enhancing operational performance and functionality. Here, using electron microscopy combined with in situ electric and magnetic biasing, we show that the skyrmion helicity in insulating Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 can be controlled by the direction of the external electric field applied during the field cooling process. The electric field-tuned helicity remains stable at low temperature, even amid variations in magnetic and electric fields. Our theoretical investigation reveals that nonzero Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions between nearest neighbors, induced by the electric field, change their sign upon reversing the electric field direction, thereby facilitating helicity selection. The electrical control of magnetic helicity demonstrated in this study can be extended to other centrosymmetric skyrmion-hosting magnets, paving the way for future device designs in topological spintronics and quantum computing.

NiSi: A New Venue for Antiferromagnetic Spintronics

Envisaging antiferromagnetic spintronics pivots on two key criteria of high transition temperature and tuning of underlying magnetic order using straightforward application of magnetic field or electric current. Here, it is shown that NiSi metal can provide suitable new platform in this quest. First, the study unveils high-temperature antiferromagnetism in single-crystal NiSi with Néel temperature, T N $\geqslant$ 700 K. Antiferromagnetic order in NiSi is accompanied by non-centrosymmetric magnetic character with small ferromagnetic component in the a–c plane. Second, it is found that NiSi manifests distinct magnetic and electronic hysteresis responses to field applications due to the disparity in two moment directions. While magnetic hysteresis is characterized by one-step switching between ferromagnetic states of uncompensated moment, electronic behavior is ascribed to metamagnetic switching phenomena between non-collinear spin configurations. Importantly, the switching behaviors persist to high temperature. In conclusion, the properties underscore the importance of NiSi in the pursuit of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Magnetic Interactions of the Centrosymmetric Skyrmion Material Gd 2 PdSi 3

The experimental realization of magnetic skyrmion crystals in centrosymmetric materials has been driven by theoretical understanding of how a delicate balance of anisotropy and frustration can stabilize topological spin structures in applied magnetic fields. Recently, the centrosymmetric material Gd 2 PdSi 3 was shown to host a field-induced skyrmion crystal, but the skyrmion stabilization mechanism remains unclear. Here, we employ neutron-scattering measurements on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline Gd 2 PdSi 3 sample to quantify the interactions that drive skyrmion formation. Our analysis reveals spatially extended interactions in triangular planes, and large ferromagnetic interplanar magnetic interactions that are modulated by the Pd/Si superstructure. The skyrmion crystal emerges from a zero-field helical magnetic order with magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic propagation vector, indicating that the magnetic dipolar interaction plays a significant role. To conclude, our experimental results establish an interaction space that can promote skyrmion formation, facilitating identification and design of centrosymmetric skyrmion materials.

Giant topological Hall effect in centrosymmetric tetragonal Mn 2–x Zn x Sb

Topological magnetism typically appears in noncentrosymmetric compounds or compounds with geometric frustration. Here, we report the effective tuning of magnetism in centrosymmetric tetragonal Mn 2–x Zn x Sb by Zn substitution. The magnetism is found to be closely coupled to the transport properties, giving rise to a very large topological Hall effect with fine-tuning of Zn content, which even persists to high temperature (~250K). The further magnetoentropic analysis suggests that the topological Hall effect is possibly associated with topological magnetism. Furthermore, our finding suggests Mn 2–x Zn x S is a candidate material for a centrosymmetric tetragonal topological magnetic system, offering opportunities for studying and tuning spin textures and developing near room temperature spin-based devices.

Local Inversion Symmetry Breaking and Thermodynamic Evidence for Ferrimagnetism in Fe 3 GaTe 2

The layered compound Fe 3 GaTe 2 is attracting attention due to its high Curie temperature, low dimensionality, and the presence of topological spin textures above room temperature, making Fe 3 GaTe 2 a good candidate for applications in spintronics. Here, in this study, we show, through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, that Fe 3 GaTe 2 single crystals break local inversion symmetry while maintaining global inversion symmetry according to X-ray diffraction. Coupled to the observation of Néel skyrmions via Lorentz-TEM, our structural analysis provides a convincing explanation for their presence in centrosymmetric materials. Magnetization measurements as a function of the temperature displays a sharp first-order thermodynamic phase-transition leading to a reduction in the magnetic moment. This implies that the ground state of Fe 3 GaTe 2 is globally ferrimagnetic and not a glassy magnetic state composed of ferrimagnetic, and ferromagnetic domains as previously claimed. Neutron diffraction studies indicate that the ferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition upon reducing the external magnetic field is associated with a change in the magnetic configuration/coupling between Fe1 and Fe2 moments. We observe a clear correlation between the hysteresis observed in both the skyrmion density and the magnetization of Fe 3 GaTe 2 . This indicates that its topological spin textures are affected by the development of ferrimagnetism upon cooling. Observation, via magnetic force microscopy, of magnetic bubbles at the magnetic phase boundary suggests skyrmions stabilized by the competition among magnetic phases and distinct exchange interactions. Our study provides an explanation for the observation of Néel skyrmions in centrosymmetric systems, while exposing a correlation between the distinct magnetic phases of Fe 3 GaTe 2 and topological spin textures.

Magnetic structure and magnetoelectric effect in the centrosymmetric antiferromagnet Cu 2 ( MoO 4 ) ( SeO 3 )

Magnetic properties of Cu 2 ⁢(MoO 4 )⁢(SeO 3 ), an S = $\frac{1}{2}$ centrosymmetric antiferromagnet (AFM), were investigated using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, neutron diffraction, and magnetoelectric (ME) measurements. Here, the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a broad peak at ~50 K, followed by a phase transition into AFM order at T N = 23.6⁢(1) K. Above T N , a fit to the Curie-Weiss law gives a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ CW = -68⁢(1) K, suggesting the dominant AFM coupling. Neutron powder diffraction reveals that the C⁢u 2+ spins are aligned AFM along the c axis with weak noncollinearity under the magnetic space group of P2$^{'}_{1}$/c. The ME response indicates that a nondiagonal component of a ME tensor is active, supporting the simultaneous spatial and time reversal symmetry breaking under P2$^{'}_{1}$/c.

Magnetic and transport behaviors of non-centrosymmetric Nd 7 Ni 2 Pd

Crystallographic, magnetic, electrical transport and thermodynamic properties of pseudo-binary Nd 7 Ni 2 Pd compound have been studied using temperature-dependent x-ray powder diffraction and physical property measurements. Compared to the ferromagnetic parent Nd 7 Pd 3 , the ground state of Nd 7 Ni 2 Pd is antiferromagnetic, and it exhibits strong metamagnetism. The measurements indicate two antiferromagnetic transitions in fields less than 8 kOe: a second-order paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic at T N2 = 29 K and a weak first-order antiferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at T N1 = 24.5 K. Here, the compound becomes ferromagnetic in fields of 8 kOe and higher with T C = 30 K. Temperature dependence of lattice parameters is anomalous, most prominently in the basal plane at ~30 K; however, there is no detectable structural distortion or clear volume discontinuity around 25 K, suggesting a significant weakening of the first-order transition when compared to the binary Nd 7 Pd 3 .
