The Bouger's Law Shell Ionospheric Transfer Function

Ionospheric transfer function (ITF) algorithms determine the effects of the ionosphere on an electromagnetic (EM) radio-frequency (RF) signal as it propagates through. In this report, the Bouger’s law shell model is outlined. This ITF is very similar to the Snell’s Law Shell ITF; however, in this formulation, plasma parameters in the ionosphere are allowed to change radially. This algorithm is expressed in the frequency domain. In this way, it is applied as linear time invariant (LTI) filter function. Signals in this report are assumed to have only a single component (i.e. x, y or z in a rectangular coordinate system). Multi-component signals can be treated simply by applying the specific ITF to each component separately.

A filtering strategy for the numerical convergence of radiation transport through purely absorbing particle clouds

Radiation transport through particle clouds plays a major role in many engineering applications. Here in this paper, we study this problem by means of solving the radiative transport equation (RTE) on a Eulerian continuous domain. The particle clouds are generated through direct numerical simulation of Navier-Stokes equations coupled with Lagrangian particle transport at different Stokes numbers. We confirm the earlier observation noted in the literature that the solution to the RTE on Eulerian mesh diverges when the Eulerian mesh size is of the order of the particle diameter. This observation is often called the homogenization error stemming from relegation of number density onto the Eulerian domain. In order to circumvent this divergence problem, we propose a filtering strategy that spreads the information of the particles to the neighboring cells in a way that the representation of the particles remains the same even when the mesh size is smaller than that of the particle size. We show through our simulations that our filtering strategy solves the issue of homogenization error for the cases where the Beer-Bouger law is valid.

Utah FORGE: 3D Gravity Data

These resources describe the 3D geophysical inversion modeling of gravity data at the FORGE site near Milford, Utah. FORGE is the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy and the site in Utah has been selected by the U.S. Dept. of Energy for a 5-year R&D program to test technologies for the development of Engineered Geothermal Systems (EGS). 3D modelling of gravity data at the FORGE site is to help characterize the subsurface geologic framework. Specifically, modelling of gravity data in 3D, used in conjunction with rock density measurements and other subsurface geologic information can provide an independent test of an existing 3D geologic model (e.g. Witter et al., 2018). Such an exercise can be useful for reducing uncertainty in 3D geologic models (Witter et al, 2019).
