Control of hybrid boosting in highly diluted internal combustion engines

A novel hybrid system enabling both flexible supercharging and limited torque assist is studied to mitigate transient response challenges of a turbocharged spark ignition engine equipped with low pressure exhaust gas recirculation. The hybrid system, called a power split supercharger (SC), is configured with a planetary gear set that splits the supercharging power between a small low-voltage electric motor and the engine crankshaft. The air path controller relies on the coordination of four actuators on the engine side and three low-level actuators on the hybrid boosting device. A decentralized control scheme is used in this work, in which the master–slave structure of the boost pressure controller decreases the turbo-lag associated with exhaust gas recirculation, while minimizing the SC operation for fuel economy. A vector reference governor is used to prevent compressor surge during engine tip-outs. In addition, the desired intake manifold pressure is modified to provide time for evacuating the exhaust gas recirculation and avoiding misfires when transitioning to low load, while the hybrid capability of the power split SC is used to recuperate the unwanted generated power. All controllers are validated on both a mean value engine model and a high-fidelity engine model. Practical challenges of implementing the vector reference governor to the highly nonlinear engine air path with pressure pulsations originating from the engine reciprocation are discussed and some solutions are proposed.

Gantry-Based 5-Fraction Elective Nodal Irradiation in Unfavorable-Risk Prostate Cancer: Outcomes From 2 Prospective Studies Comparing SABR Boost With MR Dose-Painted HDR Brachytherapy Boost

Guidelines from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Cancer Care Ontario recommend brachytherapy boost for patients with intermediate-risk or high-risk prostate cancer. SABR is an emerging technique for prostate cancer, but its use in high-risk disease is limited. Efficacy, toxic effects, and quality of life (QoL) were compared in patients treated on 2 prospective protocols that used SABR boost or magnetic resonance–guided high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) boost with 6 to 18 months of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT).

Na + -gated water-conducting nanochannels for boosting CO 2 conversion to liquid fuels

Robust, gas-impeding water-conduction nanochannels that can sieve water from small gas molecules such as hydrogen (H 2 ), particularly at high temperature and pressure, are desirable for boosting many important reactions severely restricted by water (the major by-product) both thermodynamically and kinetically. Identifying and constructing such nanochannels into large-area separation membranes without introducing extra defects is challenging. We found that sodium ion (Na + )–gated water-conduction nanochannels could be created by assembling NaA zeolite crystals into a continuous, defect-free separation membrane through a rationally designed method. Highly efficient in situ water removal through water-conduction nanochannels led to a substantial increase in carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) conversion and methanol yield in CO 2 hydrogenation for methanol production.

Dynamic Interplay between Copper Tetramers and Iron Oxide Boosting CO2 Conversion to Methanol and Hydrocarbons under Mild Conditions.

Atomically precise subnanometer catalysts are of significant interest because of their remarkable efficiency in a variety of catalytic reactions. However, the dynamic changes of active sites under reaction conditions, in particular, the transition of cluster-oxide interface structure have not yet been well-elucidated, lacking in situ measurements. By using multiple state-of-the-art in situ characterizations, here we show a dynamic interplay between copper tetramers and iron oxides in a single-size Cu-4/Fe2O3 catalyst, yielding an enrichment of surface Cu-4-Fe2+ species under reaction conditions that boosts CO2 hydrogenation at near-atmospheric pressures. During reaction, Cu-4 clusters facilitate the reduction of Fe2O3 producing surface-rich Fe2+ species in the proximate sites. The as-formed Fe2+ species in return promotes CO2 activation and transformation over Cu4 cluster, resulting in strikingly high methanol synthesis at low temperatures and C-1/C-3 hydrocarbon production in a high-temperature regime. The discovery of highly active Cu-4-Fe2+ sites thus provides new insights for the atomic-level design of copper catalyst toward high-efficiency CO2 conversion under mild conditions.

Learning electric vehicle driver range anxiety with an initial state of charge-oriented gradient boosting approach

This manuscript focuses on the modeling of electric vehicle (EV) driver’s range anxiety, a fear that a vehicle does not have sufficient range, or state of charge (SOC) of the battery pack, to reach its destination and would strand its occupants. Despite numerous research studies on the modeling of charging behaviors, modeling efforts to understand at what battery percentages do EV drivers charge their vehicles, and what are the associated contributing factors, are rather limited. To this end, an ensemble learning model based on gradient boosting is developed. The model sequentially fits new predictors to new residuals of the previous prediction and, then, minimizes the loss when adding the latest prediction. A total of 18 features are defined and extracted from the multisource data, which cover information on driver, vehicles, stations, traffic conditions, as well as spatial-temporal context information of the charging events. The analyzed dataset includes 4.5-year’s charging event log data from 3,096 users and 468 public charging stations in Kansas City Missouri, and the macroscopic travel demand model maintained by the metropolitan planning organization. Here, the result shows the proposed model achieved a satisfactory result with a R square value of 0.54 and root mean square error of 0.14, both better than multiple linear regression model and random forest model. To reduce range anxiety, it is suggested that the priorities of deploying new charging facilities should be given to the areas with higher daily traffic prediction, with more conservative EV users or that are further from residential areas.

Why Increased CdSeTe Charge Carrier Lifetimes and Radiative Efficiencies did not Result in Voltage Boost for CdTe Solar Cells

After a focused effort over the last decade, order-of-magnitude improvements in doping and electro-optical characteristics (radiative efficiency, carrier lifetime, and passivation) have been reported for polycrystalline CdSeTe solar cells. Surprisingly, this did not result in higher solar cell voltages regardless of device contacting layers, absorber grading profiles, and other changes in device architecture. From detailed evaluation of radiative emission and carrier dynamics in CdSeTe heterostructures and devices, it is shown that the complexity introduced to the absorber to achieve lifetime and passivation metrics resulted in charge carrier trapping, which now negatively affects CdSeTe absorbers.

Boosting solid oxide fuel cell performance via electrolyte thickness reduction and cathode infiltration

Increasing the power density and reducing the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is important for improving commercial viability. Here we discuss two strategies for achieving such improvements in Ni–YSZ supported SOFCs – electrolyte thickness reduction and cathode infiltration. Microstructural and electrochemical results are presented showing the effect of reducing YSZ/GDC electrolyte thickness from 8 to 2.5 μm, and the effect of PrO x infiltration into the LSCF–GDC cathode. Both of these measures are effective, particularly at lower temperatures, leading to an increase in the maximum power density at 650 °C from 0.4 to 0.95 W cm –2 , for example. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy utilizing subtractive analysis shows that PrO x enhances the cathode charge transfer process. Reducing the electrolyte thickness reduces not only the cell ohmic resistance but also the electrode polarization resistance. Furthermore, the latter effect appears to be an artifact associated with a slight increase in the steam partial pressure at the anode due to minor gas leakage across the thinner electrolyte.

Identification of boosted Higgs bosons decaying into b -quark pairs with the ATLAS detector at 13 TeV

This study describes a study of techniques for identifying Higgs bosons at high transverse momenta decaying into bottom-quark pairs, $H → b\bar{b}$, for proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{\bar{s}}$ = 13 TeV. These decays are reconstructed from calorimeter jets found with the anti-$k_t R$ = 1.0 jet algorithm. To tag Higgs bosons, a combination of requirements is used: b -tagging of $R$ = 0.2 track-jets matched to the large- R calorimeter jet, and requirements on the jet mass and other jet substructure variables. The Higgs boson tagging efficiency and corresponding multijet and hadronic top-quark background rejections are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Several benchmark tagging selections are defined for different signal efficiency targets. The modelling of the relevant input distributions used to tag Higgs bosons is studied in 36 fb -1 of data collected in 2015 and 2016 using $g → b\bar{b}$ and $Z(→ b\bar{b})γ$ event selections in data. Both processes are found to be well modelled within the statistical and systematic uncertainties.
