A Framework Using Applied Process Analysis Methods to Assess Water Security in the Vu Gia–Thu Bon River Basin, Vietnam

The Vu Gia–Thu Bon (VG–TB) river basin is facing numerous challenges to water security, particularly in light of the increasing impacts of climate change. These challenges, including salinity intrusion, shifts in rainfall patterns, and reduced water supply in downstream areas, are of great concern. This study comprehensively assessed the current state of water security in the basin using robust statistical analysis methods such as the Process Analysis Method (PAM), SMART principle, and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). This resulted in the development of a comprehensive assessment framework for water security in the VG–TB river basin. This framework identified five key dimensions, with basin development activities (0.32), the ability to meet water needs (0.24), and natural disaster resilience (0.19) being the most crucial and water resource potential being the least crucial (0.11) according to the AHP methodology. The latter also highlighted 15 indicators, four of which are particularly influential, including waste resources (0.54), flood (0.53), water storage capacity (0.45), and basin governance (0.42). Furthermore, 28 variables with high weight factors were identified. This framework aligns with the UN-Water water security definition and addresses the global water sustainability criteria outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6). It enables the computation of a comprehensive Water Security Index (WSI) for specific regions, providing a strong foundation for decision-making and policy formulation. It aims to enhance water security in the context of climate change and support sustainable basin development, thereby guiding future research and policy decisions in water resource management.

Abstract for CRADA between Mati Car bon PBC and NETL

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) will assist Mati Carbon PBC (participant) in the design and execution of their community benefits plan (CBP) for scaling Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in Arkansas. ERW involves spreading finely crushed rocks in agricultural fields to speed up the dissolution and release of certain minerals that amend soil acidity, replenish soil nutrients, and simultaneously converting CO 2 from the atmosphere to Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC). ERW not only removes CO 2 from the atmosphere but also has the potential to generate co-benefits for famers through cost reductions and increased crop yields. The collaboration between NETL and Mati Carbon, PBC (participant) will entail a detailed review of the economic, environmental and community impact of ERW in agricultural settings. This review will guide all project related decisions. It will provide a better understanding of the scale of these potential co-benefits and quantify community needs that ERW can address.

Converting PBO fibers into carbon fibers by ultrafast carbonization

Here, we report an ultrafast transformation of poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers into car- bon fibers (CFs) by direct carbonization that eliminates high-cost oxidation in traditional CF conversion. Ultrafast heating and cooling render PBO-derived CFs superlative mechanical properties. ReaxFF atomistic-scale reactive molecular dynamics simulations unveil the PBO to CF conversion mechanism in which ultrafast heating suppresses the O-contained gas release, facilitating all-carbon rings alignment during the carbonization of PBO. These results offer new guidelines for identifying and evaluating alternative CF precursors and fresh perspectives on smart manufacturing of CFs.

Programmed cell death regulator BAP2 is required for IRE1-mediated unfolded protein response in Arabidopsis

Environmental and physiological situations can challenge the balance between protein synthesis and folding capacity of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and cause ER stress, a potentially lethal condition. The unfolded protein response (UPR) restores ER homeostasis or actuates programmed cell death (PCD) when ER stress is unresolved. The cell fate determination mechanisms of the UPR are not well understood, especially in plants. Here, we integrate genetics and ER stress profiling with natural variation and quantitative trait locus analysis of 350 natural accessions of the model species Arabidopsis thaliana . Our analyses implicate a single nucleotide polymorphism to the loss of function of the general PCD regulator BON-ASSOCIATED PROTEIN2 (BAP2) in UPR outcomes. We establish that ER stress-induced BAP2 expression is antagonistically regulated by the UPR master regulator, inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1), and that BAP2 controls adaptive UPR amplitude in ER stress and ignites pro-death mechanisms in conditions of UPR insufficiency.

A Diazo Linker Ligand Promotes Flexibility and Induced Fit Binding in a Microporous Copper Coordination Network

Abstract Flexible organic linkers represent an intuitive and effective strategy to design flexible metal–organic materials. We report herein a systematic study concerning the effect of varying the central bond of mixed pyridyl‐benzoate linkers, L, upon the flexibility of three isostructuralkddtopology microporous coordination networks (CNs) of formula ML 2 :X‐kdd‐1‐Cu,1= L = (E)‐4‐(pyridin‐4‐yldiazenyl)benzoate;X‐kdd‐2‐Cu,2= L = (E)‐4‐(2‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)vinyl)benzoate; the previously reportedX‐kdd‐3‐Cu,3= L = 4‐(pyridin‐4‐ylethynyl)benzoate. As revealed by single crystal x‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) and gas sorption studies,X‐kdd‐1‐Cu, exhibited gate‐opening during CO 2 and hydrocarbon (C2 and C8) sorption experiments whereas the other two CNs did not. Insight into these phase transformations was gained from in situ variable‐pressure and variable temperature powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), SCXRD, and modeling. Rotation of ligand1around the diazo bond, torsion angle changes between phenyl and carboxylate moieties, and deformation of the Cu‐based rod building blocks enabled activatedX‐kdd‐1‐Cuto form new phases with C8 isomers and CH 2 Cl 2 , CH 2 Cl 2 inducing contraction of the activated phase. Computational studies suggest that1enables flexibility thanks to its lower barrier of deformation versus2or3. This study teaches that diazo moieties could offer a general strategy to enhance the flexibility of CNs.

An arbitrary Lagrange-Eulerian investigation of HRAM shallow jet pre-spurt formation and time sensitivities to impact plate dynamics

With dry bay fires persisting as a significant contributor to aircraft vulnerability despite chronicled developments in survivability technologies, an accurate fire prediction capability remains paramount for credible vulnerability assessments. Physics based modeling of the hydrodynamic ram (HRAM) fluid deposition process is a key component of such capability, wherein capturing the first instance of fluid spurt, referred to herein as shallow jet spurts, is a core focus. Such pre-spurts as they have been formerly identified have only been witnessed sporadically in HRAM spurt experiments. In this work, ALE3D, a first-principles multi-physics code was employed to model the shallow jet spurt phenomenon with spherical projectiles impacting water-filled tanks faced with aluminum panels, such that the underlying physics and sensitivities could be explored. Development and verification of the 2D axisymmetric model is described relative to trends observed in a prior experimental campaign. Results from the verified model suggest shallow jet spurts have at least a quadratic sensitivity to the fundamental vibrational mode of the impact plate across impact velocities 610–1829 m/s (2000–6000 ft/s). It is further explained how shallow jet spurts are arrested for impacts at the two extremes of plate rigidity. This research constitutes the first fluid-structure modeling of shallow jet spurts which future three-dimensional analyses will expound upon.
