Bulk entropy is crucial to validate the second law of the extended black hole thermodynamics

The extended black hole thermodynamics in which the cosmological constant plays the role of pressure significantly enriches the phase structure of the theory. In order to understand the extended black hole thermodynamics more precisely, we let the value of the cosmological constant vary dynamically via tunneling from one vacuum to another in a black hole induced vacuum decay. In this process, entropy of the matter/energy released by a black hole is crucial to validate the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, without taking this bulk entropy into account, entropy associated with the black hole and cosmological horizons may not always increase. Since the bulk entropy is not represented by the black hole and the cosmological horizons, this result calls for a more careful interpretation of the holographic principle in which environmental effects are taken into account.

The universality of black hole thermodynamics

The thermodynamic properties of black holes — temperature, entropy and radiation rates — are usually associated with the presence of a horizon. We argue that any extremely compact object (ECO) must have the same thermodynamic properties. Here, quantum fields just outside the surface of an ECO have a large negative Casimir energy similar to the Boulware vacuum of black holes. If the thermal radiation emanating from the ECO does not fill the near-surface region at the local Unruh temperature, then we find that no solution of gravity equations is possible. In string theory, black holes microstates are horizonless quantum objects called fuzzballs that are expected to have a surface ~l p outside r = 2⁢GM; thus the information puzzle is resolved while preserving the semiclassical thermodynamics of black holes.

Mixed gauge-global symmetries, elliptic modes, and black hole thermodynamics in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

In Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, a putative consistent theory of quantum gravity for which there is evidence for both black hole thermodynamics and a holographic construction, spacetime is endowed with a preferred dynamical spacelike foliation. The theory has a leaf reparameterization symmetry that is neither global nor local gauge, hyperbolic and elliptic equations of motion, a lack of splittability, and universal horizon black hole solutions. The reparameterization symmetry is “mixed”: it is a local symmetry in one coordinate yet global on each leaf. More broadly it is an example of both unfree and projectable gauge symmetries. The mixed symmetry and associated charge has not yet been accounted for in calculations of universal horizon thermodynamics in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. This has led to problems, in particular the failure of the first law in a class of asymptotically AdS solutions where the normal to the leaves of the foliation is not aligned with the time translation Killing vector at infinity. We show how the dynamics of the charge corresponding to this symmetry coupled with the other features above resolves this issue. We then briefly comment how this mixed symmetry, the corresponding charge, and the elliptic equations of motion also conspire to evade recent holographic arguments for only local gauge fields in consistent theories of quantum gravity due to the lack of splittability of the elliptic equation and associated mode.

Universality in logarithmic temperature corrections to near-extremal rotating black hole thermodynamics in various dimensions

The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS 4 , Kerr-Newman-AdS 4 and the rotating black hole in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS5 black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2}$logT Hawking to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. We show that these two conditions hold for near-extremal black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes of various dimensions.

Instability of super-entropic black holes in extended thermodynamics

The charged black hole of Bañados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli is studied in extended gravitational thermodynamics where there is a dynamical pressure and volume. It is a simple example of a super-entropic black hole, violating the reverse isoperimetric inequality. It is proven that this property implies that its specific heat at constant volume is negative, signaling a new kind of fundamental instability for black holes. It is conjectured that this instability is present for other super-entropic black holes, and this is demonstrated numerically for a large family of known solutions.

Specific heats for quantum BTZ black holes in extended thermodynamics

It was shown recently that extended black hole thermodynamics, where the cosmological constant is a dynamical variable, giving rise to a pressure p and its conjugate volume V , can be given a natural setting in the context of braneworld models. We study the specific heat capacities C p ( T ) and C V ( T ) of the quantum version of the Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ) black hole that lives in the induced gravity theory on the brane. There are multiple branches of solutions, and we explore and characterize key features of the possible behavior. We identify and study a critical point in the space of solutions where both specific heats diverge. In the regime of weak backreaction where we are close to an ordinary theory of gravity, the black hole is “subentropic,” but as backreaction is increased we note that there are parts of parameter space that has regions where it is “superentropic.” While a study of the sign of the specific heats does not always show a corresponding instability (conjectured in the literature), the presence of strong backreaction makes interpretation unclear. Toward an effective CFT 2 from $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 super Yang-Mills and aspects of Hawking radiation

Using $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory we recover important aspects of the near-extremal thermodynamics of AdS 5 black holes including both the outer and the inner horizons with their corresponding entropy and energy. This $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory approach to black hole thermodynamics leads to an effective CFT 2 interpretation similar to the work by Callan and Maldacena. We corroborate this effective CFT 2 by implementing a particular near-horizon limit that geometrizes the Virasoro algebras as asymptotic symmetries. Using the effective CFT 2 picture, we discuss aspects of the Hawking radiation rate for a region of the near-extremal AdS 5 black hole quantum evolution.

Microscopic entropy of AdS3 black holes revisited

A bstract We revisit the microscopic description of AdS 3 black holes in light of recent progress on their higher dimensional analogues. The grand canonical partition function that follows from the AdS 3 /CFT 2 correspondence describes BPS and nearBPS black hole thermodynamics. We formulate an entropy extremization principle that accounts for both the black hole entropy and a constraint on its charges, in close analogy with asymptotically AdS black holes in higher dimensions. We are led to interpret supersymmetric black holes as ensembles of BPS microstates satisfying a charge constraint that is not respected by individual states. This interpretation provides a microscopic understanding of the hitherto mysterious charge constraints satisfied by all BPS black holes in AdS. We also develop thermodynamics and a nAttractor mechanism of AdS 3 black holes in the nearBPS regime.

Novel aspects of the extended first law of entanglement

Using AdS/CFT an extended first law of entanglement has been previously derived for the vacuum reduced to a ball in Minkowski. The statement not only includes perturbations of the state but also of the conformal field theory (CFT), via variations of the generalized central charge. We clarify some subtleties previously overlooked and use simple arguments to generalize prior derivations to arbitrary gravity theories in the bulk as well as new regions in the boundary CFT. Our construction also applies to two-dimensional bulk theories and admits an interesting extension for a three-dimensional bulk, providing a curious result regarding the thermodynamic volume in extended black hole thermodynamics. We discuss future prospects regarding the extended first law of entanglement.

Thermodynamics of the near-extremal Kerr spacetime

We examine the thermodynamics of a near-extremal Kerr black hole, and demonstrate that the geometry behaves as an ordinary quantum system with a vanishingly small degeneracy at low temperatures. This is in contrast with the classical analysis, which instead predicts a macroscopic entropy for the extremal Kerr black hole. Our results follow from a careful analysis of the gravitational path integral. Specifically, the low temperature canonical partition function behaves as Z ~ T$\frac{3}{2}$ e S 0 +c log S 0 , with S 0 the classical degeneracy and c a numerical coefficient we compute. This is in line with the general expectations for non-supersymmetric near-extremal black hole thermodynamics, as has been clarified in the recent past, although cases without spherical symmetry have not yet been fully analyzed until now. We also point out some curious features relating to the rotational zero modes of the near-extremal Kerr black hole background that affects the coefficient c. This raises a puzzle when considering similar black holes in string theory. Our results generalize to other rotating black holes, as we briefly exemplify.

Electric and magnetic black holes in a new nonlinear electrodynamics model

Highlights: • We introduce a new NED model which is comparable with the BI model in the weak-field limit. • We find an electric black hole solution in the context of Einstein’s gravity minimally coupled with the new NED model. • We study the thermal stability of the electric black hole solution. • Modified Smarr’s formula consistent with the first law of black hole thermodynamics is obtained. A new nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) model is introduced in the form of a nonpolynomial Lagrangian which admits static spherical and also plane wave solutions in a flat space. Upon coupling with gravity the electric field is finite and comparable with the Born–Infeld counterpart. The electric and magnetic black hole solutions in the Einstein’s gravity coupled with this NED model are presented. The solutions give both asymptotically and in the weak field limit Reissner–Nordström (RN) black hole and unlike the other known models our electric solution is expressed in terms of elementary functions in a closed form. We study the first law and derive the modified Smarr’s formula for the electric type extension of our model. Considerable rich structure, especially thermodynamic ones, ranging from first to the second order phase transitions are added to the RN black hole of linear electrodynamics with this NED model. Having the exact solution for the metric function at our disposal we investigate the stability of the electric black hole from both the thermodynamical and causal points of view.

Thermodynamics of near BPS black holes in AdS 4 and AdS 7

We develop the thermodynamics of black holes in AdS 4 and AdS 7 near their BPS limit. In each setting we study the two distinct deformations orthogonal to the BPS surface as well as their nontrivial interplay with each other and with BPS properties. Our results illuminate recent microscopic calculations of the BPS entropy. We show that these microscopic computations can be leveraged to also describe the near BPS regime, by generalizing the boundary conditions imposed on states.

Wigner meets ’t Hooft near the black hole horizon

Recent work on Euclidean quantum gravity, black hole thermodynamics, and the holographic principle has seen the return of random matrix models as a powerful tool. It is explained how they allow for the study of the physics well beyond the perturbative expansion. In fact, a fully nonperturbative treatment naturally unites the familiar approach of summing over smooth geometries of all topologies with the statistical approach to characterize the typical properties of a Hamiltonian. Remarkably, this leads to an explicit excavation of the underlying microstates of quantum gravity that has applications to the low-temperature dynamics of a large class of black holes.

Duality and supersymmetry constraints on the weak gravity conjecture

Positivity bounds coming from consistency of UV scattering amplitudes are not always sufficient to prove the weak gravity conjecture for theories beyond Einstein-Maxwell. Additional ingredients about the UV may be necessary to exclude those regions of parameter space which are naïvely in conflict with the predictions of the weak gravity conjecture. In this paper we explore the consequences of imposing additional symmetries inherited from the UV theory on higher-derivative operators for Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion theory. Using black hole thermodynamics, for a preserved SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) symmetry we find that the weak gravity conjecture then does follow from positivity bounds. For a preserved O(d, d; $\mathbb{R}$) symmetry we find a simple condition on the two Wilson coefficients which ensures the positivity of corrections to the charge-to-mass ratio and that follows from the null energy condition alone. We find that imposing supersymmetry on top of either of these symmetries gives corrections which vanish identically, as expected for BPS states.

Euclidean black hole vortices

We argue the existence of solutions of the Euclidean Einstein equations that correspond to a vortex sitting at the horizon of a black hole. We find the asymptotic behaviors, at the horizon and at infinity, of vortex solutions for the gauge and scalar fields in an abelian Higgs model on a Euclidean Schwarzschild background and interpolate between them by integrating the equations numerically. Calculating the backreaction shows that the effect of the vortex is to cut a slice out of the Schwarzschild geometry. Consequences of these solutions for black hole thermodynamics are discussed.

Hot and dense quark-gluon plasma thermodynamics from holographic black holes

We present new results on the equation of state and transition line of hot and dense strongly interacting QCD matter, obtained from a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model. We considerably expand the previous coverage in baryon densities in this model by implementing new numerical methods to map the holographic black hole solutions onto the QCD phase diagram. We are also able to obtain, for the first time, the first-order phase transition line in a wide region of the phase diagram. Comparisons with the most recent lattice results for the QCD thermodynamics are also presented.
