Instantaneous difference frequency locking observed during toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmode coupling in the DIII-D tokamak

In magnetic confinement fusion, toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) are well-studied, weakly stable solutions of the linearized ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations. Driven unstable by suprathermal populations of energetic particles, TAE pose a key vulnerability to the confinement of high-energy alpha particles generated by fusion reactions. Hence, it is paramount to understand TAE dynamics if a working reactor is to be realized. In this work, we detect and characterize signatures of nonstationary nonlinear coupling between TAE using a novel, time-resolved bispectral analysis; results are supported by analytic signal of band-passed data. Crucially, a stationary phase relationship between two TAE and a nascent low frequency fluctuation is observed precisely when the triple product of magnetic fluctuation amplitudes is enhanced. Local mode number and frequency spectrum, gleaned from beam-emission spectroscopy, corroborates simultaneous satisfaction of nonlinear matching conditions, and provides a tool to identify theorized pathways of energy transfer, e.g. TAE parametric instability.

An experimental study of the existence regions and non-linear interactions of drift wave and Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities in a linear magnetized plasma

Experimental observations of the intrinsic excitation and non-linear interactions of drift wave (DW) and Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instabilities in a linear magnetized plasma column are presented. The experiments are carried out in the inverse mirror plasma experimental device (IMPED)—a cylindrical, magnetized, linear plasma machine designed to study low-frequency waves and instabilities in plasma. A novel feature of IMPED is the ability to control plasma profiles, such as the density n(r), electron temperature T e (r), and plasma potential V p (r) by varying the ratio Rm of the magnetic field in the main chamber to that in the source chamber. At high values of Rm, higher-density gradient scale length promotes the drift wave (DW) instability while lower Rm value results in a higher radial electric field, inducing a sheared poloidal flow that enhances the dominance of the Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) mode. The background and fluctuating plasma parameters are characterized using various configurations of multiple in situ electric probes at different spatial locations to quantify the local gradients that excite the low-frequency primary instabilities. Statistical, spectral, and bispectral analysis of the density and potential signals help identify these modes in terms of wave number, frequency, phase, and amplitude and also delineate the nature of their non-linear interactions.

Toroidal Alfven Wave Coupling (Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions) on DIII-D

Connect DIII-D physics with space plasma phenomena. In this case of using the toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes and frequency-chirping Reversed-Shear Alfvén eignmodes in DIII-D, we will document how the nonlinear interactions among dipolar Kinetic Alfvén Wave eigenmodes in space plasmas may determine saturation levels of these fluctuations. We seek evidence of nonlinear energy transfer and wave-wave coupling during 3-wave interactions mediated by a much lower-frequency mode. In FY2019, we found evidence of nonlinear “wave-wave” interactions in 175 relevant shots of archival DIII-D data. Toroidal mode number was identified and spectrograms were produced from each shot’s Mirnov coil data. Bispectral analysis was performed using a preliminary version of a new user friendly code derived from a 1995 M.S. thesis at WVU. These results formed a part of a May 2019 M.S. thesis at WVU.

Three-wave coupling observed between a shear Alfvén wave and a kink-unstable magnetic flux rope

Results from a laboratory experiment are presented in which, for the first time, a shear Alfvén wave is launched using an antenna in a current-carrying plasma column that is tailored to be either stable or unstable to the kink oscillation. As the plasma is driven kink unstable, the frequency power spectrum of the Alfvén wave evolves from a single peak to a peak with multiple sidebands separated by integer multiples of the kink frequency. The main sidebands (one on either side of the launched wave peak in the power spectrum) are analyzed using azimuthal wavenumber matching, perpendicular and parallel wavenumber decomposition, and bispectral time series analysis. The dispersion relation and three-wave matching conditions are satisfied, given each sideband is a propagating Alfvén wave that results from the interaction of the pump Alfvén wave and the co-propagating component of a half-wavelength, standing kink mode. The interaction is shown to generate smaller perpendicular wavelength Alfvén waves that drive energy transport to scales that will approach the dissipation scale of k⊥ρs=1, with k⊥ being the perpendicular wavenumber and ρs being the ion gyroradius at the electron temperature.
