Blade Designs For Improved Multi-Phase Performance In sCO 2 Compressors; Part II - Optical Diagnostics In sCO 2 And Experimental Evaluation With Particle Image Velocimetry

This paper presents the second part of a study in which the leading-edge and suction surface of a compressor blade was modified to delay onset of phase change for sCO 2 compressors operating near the critical point. Using a first-of-its-kind apparatus for the measurement of sCO 2 flow fields, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is used for local flow field measurements of two compressor blade geometries: the modified “biased-wedge,” and a conventional constant thickness blade. Utilizing the developed hardware, the feasibility of a simple, laser-based diagnostic for qualitatively measuring liquid phase regions, is also presented. The design of the optical diagnostics rig, a discussion of numerous challenges, and necessary considerations involved in performing optical-based measurements like PIV, in sCO 2 , are discussed. Velocity field measurements for the modified compressor profile show a much lower suction peak compared to a conventional blade. Furthermore, these results validate numerical results at the tested conditions, where the suction side profile of the biased wedge works to minimize the local pressure gradient.

Enabling Robust Compressor Operation Under Various sCO 2 Conditions at Compressor Inlet

The supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ) power cycle is one of the most investigated power conversion systems in last decade. The reason for this is its wide range of potential applications from fossil fuels (Natural gas), nuclear (Fusion, Fission), through concentrated solar power, energy storage system and waste heat recovery systems to power-to-x systems. The main advantage of the sCO 2 power cycle is very similar operation conditions, especially for the compressor, for all potential applications. Because of this the potential cost of the system can be reduced. However, the sCO 2 power cycle has still several issue that needs to address before commercial application. The current key issue is design of the primary compressor. The primary compressor is one of the key components in the sCO 2 power cycle; it operates with inlet conditions just above the critical point of CO 2 to maintain high fluid density and reduce power requirements.

Enhanced positive and negative exchange bias in FeF 2 /Ni with dusted interfaces

An enhanced exchange bias was found in FeF 2 /Ni interfaces by inserting dusting of Pd and Cu atoms. We have used an ultrathin wedge to investigate systematically the effect of a discontinuous nonmagnetic spacer between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layers. Negative and positive exchange biases are symmetric and maximized for less than two angstroms of the nonmagnetic layer. Moreover, the dusting reduces the field cooling threshold to switch between the negative and the positive exchange bias. This finding demonstrates that nonmagnetic dusted layers can improve the interfacial exchange energy density in antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic heterostructures and modify the bulk antiferromagnetic domain structure. Other dusting materials such as Ag, Ti, V, and SiO 2 showed no enhancement in FeF 2 /Ni bilayers, which indicates the atomic sensitivity of this effect.

Field-level reconstruction from foreground-contaminated 21-cm maps

Current and upcoming 21-cm experiments will soon be able to map 21-cm spatial fluctuations in three dimensions for a wide range of redshifts. However, bright foreground contamination and the nature of radio interferometry create significant challenges, making it difficult to access rich cosmological information from the Fourier modes that lie within the “foreground wedge”. Here, in this work, we introduce two approaches aiming to reconstruct the full 21-cm density field, including the missing modes in the wedge: (a) a field-level inference under an effective field theory (EFT) framework; (b) a diffusion-based deep generative model trained on simulations. Under the EFT framework, we implement a fully differentiable forward model that maps the initial conditions of matter fluctuations to the observed, foreground-filtered 21-cm maps. This enables a gradient-based sampler to simultaneously sample the initial conditions and bias parameters, allowing a physically motivated mode reconstruction. Alternatively, we apply a variational diffusion model to perform 21-cm density reconstruction at the map level. Our model is trained on semi-numerical simulations over a wide range of astrophysical parameters. Our results from both approaches should provide improved cosmological constraints from the field level and also enable cross-correlation between experiments that have little or no overlapping modes.

Graph identification of proteins in tomograms ( GRIP‐Tomo )

Abstract In this study, we present a method of pattern mining based on network theory that enables the identification of protein structures or complexes from synthetic volume densities, without the knowledge of predefined templates or human biases for refinement. We hypothesized that the topological connectivity of protein structures is invariant, and they are distinctive for the purpose of protein identification from distorted data presented in volume densities. Three‐dimensional densities of a protein or a complex from simulated tomographic volumes were transformed into mathematical graphs as observables. We systematically introduced data distortion or defects such as missing fullness of data, the tumbling effect, and the missing wedge effect into the simulated volumes, and varied the distance cutoffs in pixels to capture the varying connectivity between the density cluster centroids in the presence of defects. A similarity score between the graphs from the simulated volumes and the graphs transformed from the physical protein structures in point data was calculated by comparing their network theory order parameters including node degrees, betweenness centrality, and graph densities. By capturing the essential topological features defining the heterogeneous morphologies of a network, we were able to accurately identify proteins and homo‐multimeric complexes from 10 topologically distinctive samples without realistic noise added. Our approach empowers future developments of tomogram processing by providing pattern mining with interpretability, to enable the classification of single‐domain protein native topologies as well as distinct single‐domain proteins from multimeric complexes within noisy volumes.

Optical depth to reionization from perturbative 21 cm clustering

The optical depth τ is the least well determined parameter in the standard model of cosmology, and one whose precise value is important for both understanding reionization and for inferring fundamental physics from cosmological measurements. Here, we forecast how well future epoch of reionization experiments could constraint τ using a symmetries-based bias expansion that highlights the special role played by anisotropies in the power spectrum on large scales. Given a parametric model for the ionization evolution inspired by the physical behavior of more detailed reionization simulations, we find that future 21 cm experiments could place tight constraints on the timing and duration of reionization and hence constraints on τ that are competitive with proposed, space-based CMB missions provided they can measure k ≈ 0.1 h Mpc -1 with a clean foreground wedge across redshifts spanning the most active periods of reionization, corresponding to ionization fractions 0.2 ≲ x ≲ 0.8. Significantly improving upon existing CMB-based measurements with next-generation 21 cm surveys would require substantially longer observations (~ 5 years) than standard $\mathscr{O}$(1000 hour) integration times. Precise measurements of smaller scales will not improve constraints on τ until a better understanding of the astrophysics of reionization is achieved. In the presence of noise and foregrounds even future 21 cm experiments will struggle to constrain τ if the ionization evolution deviates significantly from simple parametric forms.
