DOE Support for the 8th International Conference on Attosecond Science (Final Technical Report)

The 8th International Conference on Attosecond Science and Technology (ATTO VIII) was held on the campus of the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL from July 10-16, 2022. The main objectives of the conference were (i) to outline the state of the art of attosecond research; (ii) to jump-start national and international collaborations that had been hindered by the pandemic; (iii) to promote recruiting and training of postdocs and tenure-track candidates; and (iv) to consolidate the global and diverse identity of the attosecond community.

Reinvented: An Attosecond Chemist

Attosecond science requires a substantial rethinking of how to make measurements on very short timescales; how to acquire the necessary equipment, technology, and personnel; and how to build a set of laboratories for such experiments. This entails a rejuvenation of the author in many respects, in the laboratory itself, with regard to students and postdocs, and in generating funding for research. It also brings up questions of what it means to do attosecond science, and the discovery of the power of X-ray spectroscopy itself, which complements the short timescales addressed. The lessons learned, expressed in the meanderings of this autobiographical article, may be of benefit to others who try to reinvent themselves.

Attosecond x-ray free-electron lasers utilizing an optical undulator in a self-selection regime

Accelerator-based x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are the latest addition to the revolutionary tools of discovery for the 21st century. The two major components of an XFEL are an accelerator-produced electron beam and a magnetic undulator, which tend to be kilometer-scale long and expensive. A proof-of-principle demonstration of free-electron lasing at 27 nm using beams from compact laser wakefield accelerators was shown recently by using a magnetic undulator. However, scaling these concepts to x-ray wavelengths is far from straightforward as the requirements on the beam quality and jitters become much more stringent. Here, we present an ultracompact scheme to produce tens of attosecond x-ray pulses with several GW peak power utilizing a novel aspect of the FEL instability using a highly chirped, prebunched, and ultrabright tens of MeV electron beam from a plasma-based accelerator interacting with an optical undulator. The FEL resonant relation between the prebunched period and the energy selects resonant electrons automatically from the highly chirped beam which leads to a stable generation of attosecond x-ray pulses. Furthermore, two-color attosecond pulses with subfemtosecond separation can be produced by adjusting the energy distribution of the electron beam so that multiple FEL resonances occur at different locations within the beam. Such a tunable coherent attosecond x-ray sources may open up a new area of attosecond science enabled by x-ray attosecond pump/probe techniques. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Efficiency-optimized relativistic plasma harmonics for extreme fields

Bright harmonic radiation from relativistically oscillating laser plasmas offers a direct route for generating extreme electromagnetic fields. Theory predicts that under optimized conditions, the plasma medium can support strong spatiotemporal compression of laser energy in a coherent harmonic focus (CHF), delivering intensity boosts many orders of magnitude greater than the incident driving laser pulse. Although diffraction-limited performance (spatial compression) and attosecond phase locking (temporal compression) have been demonstrated experimentally, efficient coupling of relativistically intense laser pulse energy into the emitted harmonic cone has not been realized so far. Here we demonstrate that this highly nonlinear interaction can be tailored to deliver the maximum conversion efficiencies predicted from simulations. By fine-tuning the temporal profile of the driving laser on sub-picosecond (<10 −12 s) timescales, energies >9 mJ between the 12th and 47th harmonics are observed. These results are in agreement with the theoretically expected efficiency dependence on harmonic order, verifying that optimal conditions have been achieved in the generation process. This is the important final element required to achieve the expected intensity boosts from a CHF in experiments. Although obtaining spatiotemporal compression and optimal efficiency simultaneously remains challenging, the path to realizing extreme optical field strengths approaching the critical field of quantum electrodynamics (the Schwinger limit at >10 16 V cm −1 or >10 29 W cm −2 ) is now open, permitting all-optical studies of the quantum vacuum and new frontiers for intense attosecond science.

Ultrafast adiabatic frequency conversion

Abstract Ultrafast adiabatic frequency conversion is a powerful method, capable of efficiently and coherently transfering ultrashort pulses between different spectral ranges, e.g. from near-infrared to mid-infrared, visible or ultra-violet. This is highly desirable in research fields that are currently limited by available ultrafast laser sources, e.g. attosecond science, strong-field physics, high-harmonic generation spectroscopy and multidimensional mid-infrared spectroscopy. Over the past decade, adiabatic frequency conversion has substantially evolved. Initially applied to quasi-monochromatic, undepleted pump interactions, it has been generalized to include ultrashort, broadband, fully-nonlinear dynamics. Through significant theoretical development and experimental demonstrations, it has delivered new capabilities and superior performance in terms of bandwidth, efficiency and robustness, as compared to other frequency conversion techniques. This article introduces the concept of adiabatic nonlinear frequency conversion, reviews its theoretical foundations, presents significant milestones and highlights contemporary ultrafast applications that may, or already do, benefit from utilizing this method.

Generation of attosecond gigawatt soft x-ray pulses through coherent Thomson backscattering

Collision between relativistic electron sheets and counterpropagating laser pulses is recognized as a promising way to produce intense attosecond x rays through coherent Thomson backscattering (TBS). In a double-layer scheme, the electrons in an ultrathin solid foil are first pushed out by an intense laser driver and then interact with the laser reflected off a second foil to form a high-density relativistic electron sheet with vanishing transverse momentum. However, the repulsion between these concentrated electrons can increase the thickness of the layer, reducing both its density and subsequently the coherent TBS. Here, we present a systematic study on the evolution of the flying electron layer and find that its resulting thickness is determined by the interplay between the intrinsic space-charge expansion and the velocity compression induced by the drive laser. How the laser driver, the target areal density, the reflector, and the collision laser intensity affect the properties of the produced x rays is explored. Multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations indicate that employing this scheme in the nonlinear regime has the potential to stably produce soft x rays with several gigawatt peak power in hundreds of terawatt ultrafast laser facilities. The pulse duration can be tuned to tens of attoseconds. Here, this compact and intense attosecond x-ray source may have broad applications in attosecond science.

Thermal effects in molecular gas-filled hollow-core fibers

Few-cycle sources with high average powers are required for applications to attosecond science. Raman-enhanced spectral broadening of Yb-doped laser amplifiers in molecular gases can yield few-cycle pulses, but thermal excitation of vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom may preclude high-power operation. Here we investigate changes in the spectral broadening associated with repetitive laser interactions in an N 2 O -filled hollow-core fiber. By comparing experimental measurements of the spectrum associated with each laser pulse to simulations based on a density matrix model, we find that losses in a spectral bandwidth and transmission are largely dominated by thermal excitation of the gas.

Electro-optic sampling of classical and quantum light

Full characterization of electric-field waveforms in amplitude and phase is achieved across the terahertz to visible spectral range through interaction with an optical pulse shorter than a half-cycle period via the Pockels (linear electro-optic) effect. This technique of electro-optic sampling has become an indispensable tool in various areas, including ultrafast pump-probe, time-domain and frequency-comb spectroscopies, quantum optics, high-harmonic generation, and attosecond science, and holds great promise for further advances. Not only does it enable spectroscopic measurements with record dynamic range and temporal resolution, along with massively parallel real-time spectral data acquisition, but its remarkable sensitivity also allows the detection of vacuum fluctuations, i.e., “zero-point motion” of electric fields, profoundly impacting our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature.

Hearing carrier-envelope offset frequency and phase in air with a microphone

Attosecond science and frequency metrology rely on the precise measurement and control of the laser pulse waveform, a feat traditionally achieved using optoelectronic techniques. In this study, we conducted a laser-induced acoustic experiment in air ionized by carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stabilized sub-4 fs pulses. Our results reveal that the acoustic signal exhibits CEP dependence in few-cycle pulses, primarily through amplitude modulation from laser-driven ionization. This optoacoustic phenomenon is, to the best of our knowledge, a novel phenomenon that enables not only the measurement of the carrier-envelope offset frequency but also the direct characterization of the waveform of optical pulses through a microphone. Our study highlights the potential of laser-induced acoustic waves for advancing ultrafast science.

Student Support for the “Frontiers in Attosecond & Ultrafast X-ray Science” School

The new millennium witnessed two revolutionary breakthroughs in ultrafast x-ray science: table-top XUV sources based on high harmonic generation in gases ushered in the attosecond era while facility-based x-ray free-electron lasers opened the path for intense, femtosecond hard x-rays. This award requested scholarship funds for a 2019 and 2023 School whose prime objective was the training of young scientists in these emerging complementary areas both relevant to DOE BES mission. The school entitled the “Frontiers of Attosecond and Ultrafast X-ray Science (FAXS)” (http://www.erice-attosecond.it/) was the second and fourth in a series, which began in 2017. The two Schools were held during March 10-16, 2019 and March 26-31, 2023 at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture (http://www.ccsem.infn.it/) in Erice, Sicily. The DOE funds supported the registration fee for young scientists (graduate students and postdocs) from US institutions. The registration fees included School participation, lodging and meals over the duration of the School. Note, the third addition of the School was held in 2022 as a virtual event due to the pandemic, DOE funds were not necessary for this event. The FAXS School is a course of the 62th and 63rd International School of Quantum Electronics under the directorship of Prof. Diederik Wiersma (University of Florence). The Directors for the FAXS School are Louis DiMauro (The Ohio State University, USA) and Mauro Nisoli (Politecnico di Milano, Italy). The FAXS School program consisted of approximately 10 lectures by leading experts in attosecond and x-ray science (see attached list). Most lecturers delivered a series of three 1-hour lectures. The lecturers were required to spend the full 5 days at the school so to promote interaction with the students. The Erice Majorana Center venue accommodated ~75 young scientists. The registration fee covered the cost of participating in the school, lodging and meals for the entire duration of the school. The schedule consisted of lectures every morning and afternoon except for one afternoon that was reserved for an archaeological excursion. Every evening had a student/postdoc poster session and social gatherings at the Majorana Center to encourage further interaction of all participants and lecturers. The two FAXS Schools attracted an international group of young scientists. The DOE funds supported the registration fee for 11 students/postdocs from US institutions (5 supported in 2019 and 6 supported in 2023). The management of the DOE fellowships were administered through the Research Foundation of The Ohio State University. FAXS scholarships for European students/postdocs were provided by European funding sources administered by co-Director, Prof. Nisoli. All students/postdocs were encouraged to present a poster. Travel expenses to the FAXS School were the responsibility of the student/postdoc home institution.

Non-linear enhancement of ultrafast X-ray diffraction through transient resonances

Diffraction-before-destruction imaging with ultrashort X-ray pulses can visualize non-equilibrium processes, such as chemical reactions, with sub-femtosecond precision in the native environment. Here, a nanospecimen diffracts a single X-ray flash before it disintegrates. The sample structure can be reconstructed from the coherent diffraction image (CDI). State-of-the-art X-ray snapshots lack high spatial resolution because of weak diffraction signal. Bleaching effects from photo-ionization significantly restrain image brightness scaling. We find that non-linear transient ion resonances can overcome this barrier if X-ray laser pulses are shorter than in most experiments. We compared snapshots from individual ≈ 100 nm Xe nanoparticles as a function of pulse duration and incoming X-ray fluence. Our experimental results and Monte Carlo simulations suggest that transient resonances can increase ionic scattering cross sections significantly beyond literature values. This provides a novel avenue towards substantial improvement of the spatial resolution in CDI in combination with sub-femtosecond temporal precision at the nanoscale.

Attosecond intra-valence band dynamics and resonant-photoemission delays in W(110)

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with attosecond precision provides new insights into the photoelectric effect and gives information about the timing of photoemission from different electronic states within the electronic band structure of solids. Electron transport, scattering phenomena and electron-electron correlation effects can be observed on attosecond time scales by timing photoemission from valence band states against that from core states. However, accessing intraband effects was so far particularly challenging due to the simultaneous requirements on energy, momentum and time resolution. Here we report on an experiment utilizing intracavity generated attosecond pulse trains to meet these demands at high flux and high photon energies to measure intraband delays between sp- and d- band states in the valence band photoemission from tungsten and investigate final-state effects in resonant photoemission.

Influence of shape resonances on the angular dependence of molecular photoionization delays

Characterizing time delays in molecular photoionization as a function of the ejected electron emission direction relative to the orientation of the molecule and the light polarization axis provides unprecedented insights into the attosecond dynamics induced by extreme ultraviolet or X-ray one-photon absorption, including the role of electronic correlation and continuum resonant states. Here, we report completely resolved experimental and computational angular dependence of single-photon ionization delays in NO molecules across a shape resonance, relying on synchrotron radiation and time-independent ab initio calculations. The angle-dependent time delay variations of few hundreds of attoseconds, resulting from the interference of the resonant and non-resonant contributions to the dynamics of the ejected electron, are well described using a multichannel Fano model where the time delay of the resonant component is angle-independent. Comparing these results with the same resonance computed in e-NO + scattering highlights the connection of photoionization delays with Wigner scattering time delays.

Filming movies of attosecond charge migration in single molecules with high harmonic spectroscopy

Electron migration in molecules is the progenitor of chemical reactions and biological functions after light-matter interaction. Following this ultrafast dynamics, however, has been an enduring endeavor. Here we demonstrate that, by using machine learning algorithm to analyze high-order harmonics generated by two-color laser pulses, we are able to retrieve the complex amplitudes and phases of harmonics of single fixed-in-space molecules. These complex dipoles enable us to construct movies of laser-driven electron migration after tunnel ionization of N 2 and CO 2 molecules at time steps of 50 attoseconds. Moreover, the angular dependence of the migration dynamics is fully resolved. By examining the movies, we observe that electron holes do not just migrate along the laser polarization direction, but may swirl around the atom centers. Our result establishes a general scheme for studying ultrafast electron dynamics in molecules, paving a way for further advance in tracing and controlling photochemical reactions by femtosecond lasers.

Controlling rotational air lasing lineshape by carrier-envelope offset phase

The carrier-envelope offset phase (CEP) of a few-cycle optical pulse is commonly used to control electron dynamics on the attosecond timescale, whereas lasing spectra from transitions between rotational states are generally emitted over much longer durations, typically nanoseconds. Here, we demonstrate CEP control of the rotational lasing spectra corresponding to the transition from B 2 Σ$^+_u$ to X 2 Σ$^+_g$ (1) in N$^+_2$ cations, transforming its lineshape from a symmetric Lorentzian profile to an asymmetric Fano type–and vice versa. This lineshape modulation arises from the interference between the B-X coherence initiated by the main pulse and the supercontinuum (self seed) by self-phase modulation, resembling an “f-to-3f" interferometry. Additionally, for lasing lines with lower rotational quantum numbers, we observe a stronger coupling between adjacent lasing peaks, which originates from the amplification of both even- and odd-order rotational coherent emission lines. Our study presents a general framework for controlling lasing lineshapes and provides new insights into sub-optical-cycle dynamics in air lasing.

Experimental demonstration of attosecond pump–probe spectroscopy with an X-ray free-electron laser

Pump–probe experiments with subfemtosecond resolution are the key to understanding electronic dynamics in quantum systems. Here we demonstrate the generation and control of subfemtosecond pulse pairs from a two-colour X-ray free-electron laser. By measuring the delay between the two pulses with an angular streaking diagnostic, we characterize the group velocity of the X-ray free-electron laser and show control of the pulse delay down to 270as. Here, we confirm the application of this technique to a pump–probe measurement in core-ionized para-aminophenol. These results reveal the ability to perform pump–probe experiments with subfemtosecond resolution and atomic site specificity.

Clocking Auger electrons

Intense X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) can rapidly excite matter, leaving it in inherently unstable states that decay on femtosecond timescales. The relaxation occurs primarily via Auger emission, so excited-state observations are constrained by Auger decay. In situ measurement of this process is therefore crucial, yet it has thus far remained elusive in XFELs owing to inherent timing and phase jitter, which can be orders of magnitude larger than the timescale of Auger decay. Here we develop an approach termed ‘self-referenced attosecond streaking’ that provides subfemtosecond resolution in spite of jitter, enabling time-domain measurement of the delay between photoemission and Auger emission in atomic neon excited by intense, femtosecond pulses from an XFEL. FUrthermore, using a fully quantum-mechanical description that treats the ionization, core-hole formation and Auger emission as a single process, the observed delay yields an Auger decay lifetime of \(2.2_{ - 0.3}^{ + 0.2}\) fs for the KLL decay channel.

Attosecond spectroscopy of size-resolved water clusters

Electron dynamics in water are of fundamental importance for a broad range of phenomena, but their real-time study faces numerous conceptual and methodological challenges. Here, in this paper, we introduce attosecond size-resolved cluster spectroscopy and build up a molecular-level understanding of the attosecond electron dynamics in water. We measure the effect that the addition of single water molecules has on the photoionization time delays of water clusters. We find a continuous increase of the delay for clusters containing up to four to five molecules and little change towards larger clusters. We show that these delays are proportional to the spatial extension of the created electron hole, which first increases with cluster size and then partially localizes through the onset of structural disorder that is characteristic of large clusters and bulk liquid water. These results indicate a previously unknown sensitivity of photoionization delays to electron-hole delocalization and indicate a direct link between electronic structure and attosecond photoionization dynamics. Our results offer new perspectives for studying electron-hole delocalization and its attosecond dynamics.
