Negative Differential Resistance (NDR) frequency conversion with gain

The dependence of the I-V characteristic of the negative differential resistance (NDR) devices on the power level and frequency of the rf input signal has been theoretically analyzed with a modified large- and small-signal nonlinear circuit analysis program. The NDR devices we used in this work include both the tunnel diode (without the antisymmetry in the I-V characteristic) and resonant-tunneling devices (with the antisymmetry in the I-V characteristic). Absolute negative conductance can be found from a zero-biased resonant tunneling device when the applied pump power is within a small range. This study verifies the work of Sollner et al. Variable negative conductances at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies can also be obtained from both the unbiased and biased tunnel diodes. The magnitude of the negative conductances can be adjusted by varying the pump amplitude -- a very useful circuit property. However, the voltage range over which the negative conductance occurs moves towards the more positive side of the voltage axis with increasing frequency. Furthermore, the range of the pumping amplitude to obtain negative conductance varies with the parasitics (resistance and capacitance) of the device. The theoretical observation of the dependence of the I-V characteristic of the NDR devices on the power and frequency of the applied pump signal is supported by the experimental results. In addition, novel functions of a NDR device such as self-oscillating frequency multiplier and mixer with gain have been experimentally demonstrated. The unbiased oscillator have also been successfully realized with a NDR device with an antisymmetrical I-V characteristic. Finally, the applications of these device functions will be discussed.

Prediction of unsteady aerodynamic loadings caused by trailing edge control surface motions in subsonic compressible flow: Analysis and results

A theoretical analysis and a computer program have been developed for the prediction of unsteady lifting surface loadings caused by motions of trailing edge control surfaces having sealed gaps. The final form of the downwash integral equation has been formulated by isolating the singularities from the non-singular terms and establishing a preferred solution process to remove and evaluate the downwash discontinuities in a systematic manner. Comparisons of theoretical and experimental pressure data are made for several control surface configurations. The comparisons indicate that reasonably accurate theoretical pressure distributions and generalized forces may be obtained for a wide variety of control surface configurations. Spanwise symmetry or antisymmetry of motion, and up to four control surfaces on each half span can be accommodated.

Prediction of unsteady aerodynamic loadings caused by leading edge and trailing edge control surface motions in subsonic compressible flow: Analysis and results

Coded aperture imaging of X-ray and gamma-ray sources

Coded aperture telescopes employing arrays of a small number of discrete detector elements for hard X-rays or gamma-rays are discussed. Aperture patterns are described that permit a unique reconstruction of the image with high contrast, and that exhibit a specific rotational antisymmetry to suppress systematic distortions. It is shown that high flux sensitivity can be achieved in this fashion as well as good angular resolution.

Harmonic multiplication using resonant tunneling

This paper demonstrates the use of resonant-tunneling diodes as varistors for harmonic multiplication. It is shown that efficient odd-harmonic conversion is possible and that even harmonics do not appear because of the antisymmetry of the current-voltage (I-V) curve. It is also shown that, with the proper choice of resonant-tunneling structure and pump amplitude, most of the harmonic output power can be confined to a single odd-harmonic frequency. Fifth-harmonic multiplication was demonstrated with an output at 21.75 GHz and a power conversion efficiency of 0.5 percent, and a fifth-harmonic efficiency of 2.7 percent was achieved in a circuit simulation using an improved I-V curve.

The symmetry properties of planetary magnetic fields

This paper provides a comparative study of the geometrical structures of the magnetic fields of earth, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, starting from the traditional multipolar representations of these fields. For earth, Jupiter, and Saturn, the centered dipole, quadrupole, and octupole contributions are included, while at Uranus only the dipole and quadrupole contributions are considered. It is found that there are a number of common features of the magnetic fields of earth and Jupiter. Compared to earth and Jupiter, the Saturnian field exhibits not only a high degree of symmetry about the rotation axis but also a high degree of antisymmetry about the equatorial plane. The Uranian field shows strong deviations from both such symmetries. Nevertheless, there remain features common to all four planets.

The kinematics of the extended gas in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516

Long-slit spectroscopy of the extended gas in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516 reveals considerable substructure in the narrow emission lines with several kinematically distinct components visible in H-alpha and N II lambda 6583. The velocity measurements cover almost all of the 3 kpc scale, Z-shaped emission-line structure seen in narrow-band images and suggest that a significant rotational component is present. At large radii, strong deviations from this rotation are observed, indicating that a radial component of motion to the gas is also required to adequately describe the velocity field. There is a clear antisymmetry in these deviations with the velocities being blueshifted with respect to 'normal' galactic rotation on the southwest side of the nucleus and redshifted with respect to it on the northeast side. Although several models can be invoked to explain the observed velocities, the symmetries in the kinematics and emission-line morphology are most easily explained by a bent bipolar mass outflow from the nucleus. In this simple model, gas is ejected out of the plane of the stellar disk and is then slowed by gravitational forces. As the gas trajectory begins to bend, significant velocity deviations are produced. These observations provide some of the best kinematic evidence for mass outflow, although indirect arguments suggest they may be a common feature in many Seyfert galaxies.

Topography and subduction geometry in the central Andes: Clues to the mechanics of a noncollisional orogen

The central Andeean orogen between 12 deg and 32 deg S latitude exhibits a high degree of spatial order: principally an extraordinary bilateral symmetry that is common to the Earth's surface, the underlying Wadati-Benioff zone, and the Nazca/South America plate kinematics, which has been stable since the mid-Tertiary. This spatial order must reflect the physical mechanisms of mountain building in this noncollisional orogen. The shapes of the topography and subduction zone can be reduced to symmetric and antisummeric components relative to any verical symmetry plane; the particular plaen which minimizes the antisymmetry (and maximizes the symmetry) is well resolved and is essentially coincident with the stable Euler equator of Nacza/South America relative motion since the mid-Tertiary. That the topography, subduction geometry, and persistent mid-Tertiary plate kinematics share common spatial and geometric elements suggests that he distribution of topography in this orogen depends strongly on the dynamics of subduction. Other factors that might affect the topography and underlying tectonics, such as climate and inherited strutura fabric, which have different spatial characterisitcs, must be of less significance at a continental scale. Furthermore, the small components of asymmetry among the various elements of the orogen appear to be mutually relate in a simple way; it is possible that this coupled asymmetry is associated with a late Teriary change in plate kinematics. These observations suggest that there is a close connection between plate tectonics and the form of the Earth's surface in this noncollisional setting. It follows hta the distribution of topography near convergent plate boundaries may provide a powerful constraing for understanding the dynamics of subduction.

Quasiparticle Interactions in Neutron Matter for Applications in Neutron Stars

A microscopic model for the quasiparticle interaction in neutron matter is presented. Both-particle (pp) and particle-hole (ph) correlations are included. The pp correlations are treated in semi-empirical way, while ph correlations are incorporated by solving coupled two-body equations for particle-hole interaction and the scattering amplitude of the Fermi sphere. The resulting integral equations self-consistently sum the ph reducible diagrams. Antisymmetry is kept at all stages and hence the forward-scattering sum rules for the scattering amplitude are obeyed. Results for Landau parameters and transport coefficients in a density regime representing the crust of a neutron star are presented. We also estimate the (1)S(sub 0) gap parameter for neutron superfluidity and comment briefly on neutron-star implications.
