High-efficiency K-band tracking antenna feed

Antenna feed features high aperture efficiency of multimode near-field horn and develops tracking signals without conventional monopulse bridge. Feed assembly is relatively simple and very compact. However, feed is sensitive to cross-polarized energy which couples into orthogonal error channel.

Characterization of tapered slot antenna feeds and feed arrays

A class of feed antennas and feed antenna arrays used in the focal plane of paraboloid reflectors and exhibiting higher than normal levels of cross-polarized radiation in the diagonal planes is addressed. A model which allows prediction of element gain and aperture efficiency of the feed/reflector system is presented. The predictions are in good agreement with experimental results. Tapered slot antenna (TSA) elements are used an example of an element of this type. It is shown that TSA arrays used in multibeam systems with small beam spacings are competitive in terms of aperture efficiency with other, more standard types of arrays incorporating waveguide type elements.

Composite antenna feed

A composite antenna feed subsystem concentrated in a small area at the prime focus of the parabola of a satellite parabolic reflector accomodates a plurality of frequency bands. The arrays comprising the subsystem are mounted on the top cover of a communication module. A multimode horn is arranged at the center of the subsystem axis which functions at X- And C-band frequencies, and a cross array consisting of individual elements form the S-band feed, with one arm of the S-band array containing an element mutually shared with the L-band array. Provision is also made for UHF frequencies, and a dipole arrangement for VHF frequencies is arranged around the S-band arms.

Control of antenna-feed attitude and reflector vibrations in large spaceborne antennas by mechanical decoupling and movable dampers

Simple, practical methods for damping reflector vibrations and designing antenna-feed attitude control systems in large deployable spaceborne antennas are proposed. The former involves a movable damper which is positioned so that the rate-of-change of total vibrational energy is minimized. The latter introduces a mechanical decoupler between the flexible boom and the antenna-feed, whereby the feed-attitude control system can be designed independent of boom dynamics. The validity of these approaches are substantiated by analytical studies, computer simulation, and experimental studies.

Calculating Directivities of Planar-Array Antenna Feeds

Design of planar-array antennas and antenna feeds aided by new approach to calculation of array directivity. Technique takes into account polarizations, asymmetries in element patterns, nonuniform element spacings, and arbitrary excitations. Gives numerical results faster than previous integration methods, and results agree with those obtained by older methods.

Antenna feed system for receiving circular polarization and transmitting linear polarization

An invention is described which provides for receiving a circularly polarized signal from an antenna feed connected to orthogonally spaced antenna elements. It also provides for transmitting a linearly polarized signal through the same feed without switches, and without suffering a 3 dB polarization mismatch loss, using an arrangement of hybrid junctions. The arrangement is comprised of two dividing hybrid junctions, each connected to a different pair of antenna elements and a summing hybrid junction. In one version, a receiver is connected to the summing hybrid junction directly. A diplexer is used to connect a transmitter to only one pair of antenna elements. In another version, designated left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) transmitters are connected to the summing hybrid junction by separate diplexers, and separate LCP and RCP sensitive receivers are connected to the diplexers in order to transmit linearly polarized signals using all four antenna elements while receiving circularly polarized signals as before. An orthomode junction and horn antenna may replace the two dividing hybrid junctions and antenna feed.

Antenna feed system for receiving circular polarization and transmitting linear polarization

An object is to provide for receiving a circularly polarized signal from an antenna feed (10) connected to orthogonally spaced antenna elements (11, 12, 13, 14) and for transmitting a linearly polarized signal through the same feed without switches, and without suffering a 3 dB polarization mismatch loss, using an arrangement of hybrid junctions. The arrangement is comprised of two dividing hybrid junctions (15, 16), each connected to a different pair of antenna elements and a summing hybrid junction (17). In one embodiment, a receiver (18) is connected to the summing hybrid junction directly. A diplexer (19a or 19b) is used to connect a transmitter (20a or 20b) to only one pair of antenna elements. In an alternative embodiment, designated left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) transmitters (21, 22) are connected to the summing hybrid junction by separate diplexers (23, 24), and separate LCP and RCP sensitive receivers (25, 26) are connected to the diplexers in order to transmit linearly polarized signals using all four antenna elements while receiving circularly polarized signals as before. An orthomode junction (30) and horn antenna (32) may replace the two dividing hybrid junctions (15, 16) and antenna feed (10).

New X-band antenna feeds for the DSN 64-meter stations

New X-band antenna feed assemblies with dual-polarization capability are being implemented in the DSN 64-meter stations. Together with dual X-band traveling wave masers, they permit the simultaneous reception of right- and left-hand circular polarization from the Voyager spacecraft. The new feed also includes a dual hybrid mode feedhorn which increases the antenna gain by 0.36 dB over the present feedhorn.

Rain-Blowing Plenum For Antenna Feed Horn

Double-diaphragm radome drives raindrops away from antenna feed horn. Includes solid diaphragm at mouth of feed horn surmounted by perforated diaphragm. Pressurized air in plenum between diaphragms flows out through perforations. Eliminates increase in noise temperature occuring when water covers radome. Useful for X-band and higher frequencies, susceptible to effects of water.

Radiometric evaluation of antenna-feed component losses

Radiometric method accurately calibrates the principal line sections of an antenna, including the section which contains the antenna-feed component /mode generator and polarizer/. Precise knowledge of the absolute antenna temperature is not required.

A hardware demonstration of distributed control for a flexible offset-feed antenna

A fully instrumented hardware model of a flexible offset-feed antenna has been constructed for laboratory tests. Three rate gyros, four angular position laser sensors, and a set of ten distributed accelerometers are used to rconstruct the antenna state. Three control moment gyros are used to simultaneously orient the antenna, and to maintain a stable line of sight. A description is presented of the distributed antenna control system and experimental results.
