Phosphorus-Atom Transfer from Phosphaethynolate to an Alkylidyne

A low-spin and mononuclear vanadium complex, ( Me nacnac)V(CO)(η 2 -P≡C t Bu) ( 2 ) ( Me nacnac - =[ArNC(CH 3 )] 2 CH, Ar=2,6- i Pr 2 C 6 H 3 ), was prepared upon treatment of the vanadium neopentylidyne complex ( Me nacnac)V≡C t Bu(OTf) ( 1 ) with Na(OCP)(diox) 2.5 (diox=1,4-dioxane), while the isoelectronic ate-complex [Na(15-crown-5)]{([ArNC(CH 2 )]CH[C(CH 3 )NAr])V(CO)(η 2 -P≡C t Bu)} ( 4 ), was obtained via the reaction of Na(OCP)(diox) 2.5 and ([ArNC(CH 2 )]CH[C(CH 3 )NAr])V≡C t Bu(OEt 2 ) ( 3 ) in the presence of crown-ether. Computational studies suggest that the P-atom transfer proceeds by [2+2]-cycloaddition of the P≡C bond across the V≡C t Bu moiety, followed by a reductive decarbonylation to form the V-C≡O linkage. Additionally, the nature of the electronic ground state in diamagnetic complexes, 2 and 4 , was further investigated both theoretically and experimentally, using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, and comparison of salient bond metrics derived from X-ray single-crystal structural characterization. In combination, these data are consistent with a low-valent vanadium ion in complexes 2 and 4 . This study represents the first example of a metathesis reaction between the P-atom of [PCO] - and an alkylidyne ligand.

Electrochemical Investigation of Low-Valent Multiply M≡M Bonded Group VI Dimers: A Standard Chemical Reduction Leads to an Unexpected Product

The synthesis and investigation of multimetallic complexes bearing metal–metal bonds have been significantly advanced over the last 30 years with exciting applications across many fields. While the outlook for synthetically innovative metal–metal species is promising, the reactivity of the classic M 2 X 6 alkyl dimers (where M = W, Mo; X = CH 2 CMe 3 , CH 2 SiMe 3 ) is still not fully understood. In particular, the redox characteristics of these complexes have not been explored by cyclic voltammetry (CV). In this work, W 2 (CH 2 CMe 3 ) 6 and Mo 2 (CH 2 CMe 3 ) 6 (1 and 2, respectively) were characterized using CV to show differing electrochemical behavior between the two species. Stoichiometric reactions, guided by the results of the CV experiments, led to the isolation of an alkylidyne-bridged dimer bearing a rare structural motif, W 2 (μ-CCMe 3 ) 2 (CH 2 CMe 3 ) 4 (3). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) were used to establish the connectivity of the structure in the solid and solution phases. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on 1–3 and the previously reported W 2 (CSiMe 3 ) 2 (CH 2 SiMe 3 ) 4 (4) were used to rationalize the reactivity of 1 to form 3 and the structural differences between 3 and 4. Complexes 3 and 4 constitute a case in which the stereoelectronic properties of the silyl neopentyl ligand can affect differences in structure and bonding.
