Algebraic Compression of Free Fermionic Quantum Circuits: Particle Creation, Arbitrary Lattices and Controlled Evolution

In this work [1], we extend our recently introduced algebraic circuit compression algorithms [2], [3] that can compress time evolution circuits of free fermionic Hamiltonians on an n-site 1D chain, equation H(t)=∑i=1n-1 (hi(t)cici+1+pi(t)cici+1)+h.c., 1 equation in three significant ways: (1) we allow for compression of free fermionic Hamiltonians on arbitrary lattices, (2) we incorporate particle creation/annihilation operators into the compression schemes, and (3) we extend the compression scheme to controlled time-evolution operators. We illustrate the effectiveness of our approach by simulating the dynamics of a fermion on a 4× 4 2D square lattice on ibmq_washington, both in the presence and absence of disorder. Our quantum simulations show a remarkably high fidelity which is enabled through the compressed circuits.

An Algebraic Quantum Circuit Compression Algorithm for Hamiltonian Simulation

Quantum computing is a promising technology that harnesses the peculiarities of quantum mechanics to deliver computational speedups for some problems that are intractable to solve on a classical computer. Current generation noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers are severely limited in terms of chip size and error rates. Shallow quantum circuits with uncomplicated topologies are essential for successful applications in the NISQ era. In this work, based on matrix analysis, we derive localized circuit transformations to efficiently compress quantum circuits for simulation of certain spin Hamiltonians known as free fermions. The depth of the compressed circuits is independent of simulation time and grows linearly with the number of spins. The proposed numerical circuit compression algorithm behaves backward stable and scales cubically in the number of spins enabling circuit synthesis beyond O(10 3 ) spins. The resulting quantum circuits have a simple nearest-neighbor topology, which makes them ideally suited for NISQ devices.

QuYBE - An Algebraic Compiler for Quantum Circuit Compression

QuYBE is an open-source algebraic compiler for the compression of quantum circuits. It has been applied for the efficient simulation of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian on quantum computers. Currently, it can simulate the time dynamics of one-dimensional chains. It includes modules to generate the quantum circuits for the above as well as produce the compressed circuits, which are independent of the time step. It utilizes the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) to perform the compression. QuYBE enables users to seamlessly design, execute, and analyze the time dynamics of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian on quantum computers. QuYBE is the first step toward making the YBE technique available to a broader community of scientists from multiple domains. The QuYBE compiler is available at https://github.com/ZichangHe/QuYBE.

Algebraic compression of quantum circuits for Hamiltonian evolution

Here unitary evolution under a time-dependent Hamiltonian is a key component of simulation on quantum hardware. Synthesizing the corresponding quantum circuit is typically done by breaking the evolution into small time steps, also known as Trotterization, which leads to circuits the depth of which scales with the number of steps. When the circuit elements are limited to a subset of SU(4) - or equivalently, when the Hamiltonian may be mapped onto free fermionic models - several identities exist that combine and simplify the circuit. Based on this, we present an algorithm that compresses the Trotter steps into a single block of quantum gates using algebraic relations between adjacent circuit elements. This results in a fixed depth time evolution for certain classes of Hamiltonians. We explicitly show how this algorithm works for several spin models, and demonstrate its use for adiabatic state preparation of the transverse field Ising model.

Qutrit circuits and algebraic relations: A pathway to efficient spin-1 Hamiltonian simulation

Quantum information processing has witnessed significant advancements through the application of qubit-based techniques within universal gate sets. Recently, exploration beyond the qubit paradigm to d -dimensional quantum units or qudits has opened new avenues for improving computational efficiency. This paper delves into the qudit-based approach, particularly addressing the challenges presented in the high-fidelity implementation of qudit-based circuits due to increased complexity. As an innovative approach towards enhancing qudit circuit fidelity, we explore algebraic relations, such as the Yang-Baxter-like turnover equation, which may enable circuit compression and optimization. The paper introduces the turnover relation for the three-qutrit time propagator and its potential use in reducing circuit depth. We further investigate whether this relation can be generalized for higher-dimensional quantum circuits, including a focused study on the one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg model. Our paper outlines both rigorous and numerically efficient approaches to potentially achieve this generalization, providing a foundation for further explorations in the field of qudit-based quantum computing.
