Mass transport and crystal growth of the mixed ZrS2-ZrSe2 system

The solid solubility of the ZrS2-ZrSe2 system was reinvestigated by annealing techniques to establish the relationship between composition and lattice parameters. Mixed crystals of ZrS(2x)Se2(1-x) for selected compositions of the source material were grown by chemical vapor transport and characterized by X-ray diffraction and microscopic methods. The mass transport rates and crystal growth of ZrSSe were investigated and compared with those of other compositions. The mass fluxes of the mixed system showed an increase with increasing selenium content. The transport products were richer in ZrSe2 than the residual source materials when the ZrSe2 content of the starting materials was greater than 50 mol.-pct. The mass transport rates revealed an increasing mass flux with pressure.

Theoretical studies of the monoxides and monosulfides of Y, Zr, and Nb

Modified-CPF and CASSCF/multireference-CI theoretical calculations are presented for the ground and low-lying states of YO and YS, ZrO and ZS, and NbO and NbS. The techniques employed are explained, and the calculated spectroscopic constants are presented in extensive tables. Good agreement is found with published experimental data on the oxides, and it is inferred that the sulfide results are accurate as well. Particular attention is given to the high-lying quartet manifold of states in YO and the (1) 3Pi-a3Delta transition of ZrS (possibly the source of the IR Keenan bands seen in S-star spectra).

Force Measurements on a 1/40-scale Model of the U. S. Airship "Akron."

This report describes a series of tests made on a 1/40-scale model of the U. S. Airship "Akron" (ZRS-4) for the purpose of determining the drag, lift, and pitching moments of the bare hull and of the hull equipped with two different sets of fins. Measurements were also made of the elevator forces and hinge moments.

Pressure-Distribution Measurements on the Hull and Fins of a 1/40-Scale Model of the U. S. Airship "Akron."

This report presents the results of measurements of pressure distribution conducted in the propeller-research wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics on a 1/40-scale model of the U. S. Airship "Akron" (ZRS-4). The pressures, which were measured simultaneously at nearly 400 orifices located at 26 stations along one side of the hull, were recorded by two photographic multiple manometers placed inside the model. The hull pressures were measured both with and without the tail surfaces and the control car for eight angles of pitch varying from 0 degree to 20 degrees and at air speeds of approximately 70 and 100 miles per hour. The pressures were also measured at approximately 160 orifices on one horizontal fin for the above speeds and pitch angles and for nine elevator angles.
