Short-Term Elevated Temperature Mechanical Performance and Microstructure of A Niobium-Zirconium Alloy Produced via Laser Powder Bed Fusion In-Situ Alloying

Nb-1Zr is a readily fabricable, dispersion-strengthened niobium alloy with improved elevated temperature properties compared to commercially pure niobium. This low to moderate strength niobium alloy is desirable in thermal management systems for fission power and propulsion applications; however, pre-alloyed spherical feedstock for powder-based additive manufacturing processes is generally unavailable. Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) in-situ alloying of a Nb-1Zr chemistry was performed using a high-purity niobium feedstock coated with 1 wt% of zirconium-based ceramic compound nano-powders: ZrO 2 , ZrC, and ZrH 2 . The additively manufactured material was mechanically tested at elevated temperatures within a controlled environment in the as-built condition. For comparison, traditionally manufactured wrought feedstock was also tested within an identical environment. Examination of the materials’ microstructure and short-term elevated temperature mechanical response determined: in-situ alloying of spherical Nb powder feedstock with Zr-based ceramic nanoparticles can be successfully implemented; the ZrO 2 addition offered the greatest elevated temperature stability and strength but exhibited brittle behavior; the ZrC addition achieved a balance of room temperature ductility and elevated temperature strength; and the ZrH 2 -modified material had the lowest as-built interstitial content and showed high ductility with mechanical performance most similar to wrought Nb-1Zr.

Technology of nuclear-Brayton space power systems

The present technology of Brayton power systems is reviewed. The potential for even higher system efficiency at the 10 KWe level is assessed as well as the potential for comparable efficiency with an output of 1 or 2 KWe. Systems accommodation of isotope decay is briefly discussed. The salient features are described for a Brayton power system based on this technology and employing the ZrH reactor. Reactor lives for this and competitive systems are compared. Growth capability with an advanced reactor is assessed. A concept for application of this technology to driving a gas-dynamic laser is described.

Manned space flight nuclear system safety. Volume 3: Reactor system preliminary nuclear safety analysis. Part 2A: Accident model document, appendix

The detailed abort sequence trees for the reference zirconium hydride (ZrH) reactor power module that have been generated for each phase of the reference Space Base program mission are presented. The trees are graphical representations of causal sequences. Each tree begins with the phase identification and the dichotomy between success and failure. The success branch shows the mission phase objective as being achieved. The failure branch is subdivided, as conditions require, into various primary initiating abort conditions.

Thermoelectric pump performance analysis computer code

A computer program is presented that was used to analyze and design dual-throat electromagnetic dc conduction pumps for the 5-kwe ZrH reactor thermoelectric system. In addition to a listing of the code and corresponding identification of symbols, the bases for this analytical model are provided.
