Antiferromagnet to ferromagnet crossover driven by nonmagnetic Co doping in heavy-fermion YbRh 3 Si 7

YbRh 3 ⁢Si 7 is a heavy fermion compound that stands out among Yb-based heavy fermions, with its relatively high magnetic ordering temperature and large Yb-Yb distance. To investigate the origin of the magnetic properties in this compound, we synthesized Co doped YbRh 3⁢ Si 7 , achieving a record-high ferromagnetic ordering temperature T C =15.6K, only limited by the Co solubility of 20%. Furthermore, we find a crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order with Co doping. Additionally, the specific heat and magnetotransport measurements show heavy fermion behavior and the persistence of Kondo latticelike behavior in the Yb⁢(Rh 1-x Co x ) 3⁢ Si 7 series.

Materials Data on YbRh by Materials Project

YbRh is Tetraauricupride structured and crystallizes in the cubic Pm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Yb is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent Rh atoms. All Yb–Rh bond lengths are 2.88 Å. Rh is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent Yb atoms.

Shot noise and universal Fano factor as a characterization of strongly correlated metals

Shot noise measures out-of-equilibrium current fluctuations and is a powerful tool to probe the nature of current-carrying excitations in quantum systems. Recent shot-noise measurements in the heavy-fermion strange metal YbRh 2 Si 2 exhibit a strong suppression of the Fano factor ( F )—the ratio of the current noise to the average current in the dc limit. This system is representative of metals in which electron correlations are extremely strong. Here we carry out the first theoretical study on the shot noise of diffusive metals in the regime of strong correlations. A Boltzmann-Langevin equation formulation is constructed in a quasiparticle description in the presence of strong correlations. We find that F = 3 / 4 in such a correlation regime. Thus, we establish the aforementioned Fano factor as universal to Fermi liquids, and we show that the Fano factor suppression observed in experiments on YbRh 2 Si 2 necessitates a loss of the quasiparticles. Our work opens the door to systematic theoretical studies of shot noise as a means of characterizing strongly correlated metallic phases and materials. Shot noise in a strange metal

Strange-metal behavior has been observed in materials ranging from high-temperature superconductors to heavy fermion metals. In conventional metals, current is carried by quasiparticles; although it has been suggested that quasiparticles are absent in strange metals, direct experimental evidence is lacking. We measured shot noise to probe the granularity of the current-carrying excitations in nanowires of the heavy fermion strange metal YbRh 2 Si 2 . When compared with conventional metals, shot noise in these nanowires is strongly suppressed. This suppression cannot be attributed to either electron-phonon or electron-electron interactions in a Fermi liquid, which suggests that the current is not carried by well-defined quasiparticles in the strange-metal regime that we probed. As a result, our work sets the stage for similar studies of other strange metals.

Thermal transport in Yb-based 1-2-20 materials

Abstract Lattice thermal-transport properties of heavy-fermion YbT 2 Zn 20 -based (T = Co, Rh, and Ir) 1-2-20 compounds are calculated with the single-mode relaxation-time approximation and the full solution of the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport equation from first-principles anharmonic phonon calculations. We predict low lattice thermal conductivity κ L with a maximum value of ∼ 24.16 · K at 85.14 K, 137.29 · K at 9.67 K, and 23.55 · K at 67.50 K and ∼ 12.02, 40.04, and 10.30 · K at room temperature for YbCo 2 Zn 20 , YbRh 2 Zn 20 , and YbIr 2 Zn 20 , respectively. Based on the analysis of the cumulative κ L as a function of the phonon mean free path and the frequency-dependent joint density of states at various temperatures, we attribute the low κ L to a rattling mode with an average characteristic rattling frequency that enhanced phonon scattering processes, which reduced the phonon mean free paths, suppressed the phonon lifetime, and enhanced the probability of three-phonon scattering events. The predicted low κ L , especially in YbCo 2 Zn 20 and YbIr 2 Zn 20 , makes them promising candidate materials for thermoelectric applications and thermal management.
