Materials Data on YbCl3 by Materials Project
YbCl3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of two YbCl3 sheets oriented in the (0, 1, 0) direction. Yb3+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight Cl1- atoms. There are a spread of Yb–Cl bond distances ranging from 2.75–2.94 Å. There are two inequivalent Cl1- sites. In the first Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in an L-shaped geometry to two equivalent Yb3+ atoms. In the second Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three equivalent Yb3+ atoms.
