Mechanisms of Apatite Formation in Reactions of Yb 2-2x Gd 2x Si 2 O 7 with CMAS

Bulk β-Yb 1.9 Gd 0.1 Si 2 O 7 , β-Yb 1.6 Gd 0.4 Si 2 O 7 , and γ-Yb 1.4 Gd 0.6 Si 2 O 7 , along with baseline γ-Y 2 Si 2 O 7 and β-Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 were investigated in contact with a molten silicate to determine mechanisms of thermochemical degradation. A model 30.67CaO-8.25MgO-12.81AlO 1.5- 48.27SiO 2 silicate composition was deposited on the surfaces of the samples at a loading of ~2 mg/cm 2 . Reactions with the molten silicate resulted in the formation of a silicate apatite layer, which has been shown to reduce further molten silicate infiltration. Additions of gadolinium up to 30 mol% to Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 reduced infiltration up to ~60% compared to baseline Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 , but additional exposure time at temperature resulted in loss of the apatite layer. The results herein indicate that doping with gadolinium disilicate may not be beneficial in the long term degradation of disilicate-based EBCs by molten silicates.

Structural evolution, electrochemical kinetic properties, and stability of A-site doped perovskite Sr(1-x)Yb(x)CoO(3-δ)

Mixed ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) perovskite SrCoO(3-δ) is a widely studied (electro)catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and possesses different crystal structures at different temperatures. These temperature dependent phase transitions significantly impact the ordering of oxygen vacancies and electrochemical kinetic properties as well as the reliability of the related devices. Some of the crystal structures formed, e.g. hexagonal phases, turn out to be almost impermeable to oxygen gas. Therefore, it is important to stabilize the crystal structure of SrCoO(3-δ) that favors the ORR over a wide temperature range. Herein, the partial substitution of the A-site Sr with Yb is systematically studied, including synthesis, characterization and analysis of structural evolution, electrochemical kinetic properties, thermal stability, and stability in a CO2-containing atmosphere. The results indicate that Sr(0.90)Yb(0.10)CoO(3-δ) is able to stabilize the tetragonal crystal structure with less ordered oxygen vacancies, leading to polarization resistances of 0.051, 0.115 and 0.272 U sq.cm at 750, 700 and 650 °C, respectively, on symmetrical cells. Sr(0.90)Yb(0.10)CoO(3-δ) demonstrates a very stable surface oxygen vacancy distribution and electronic structure near oxygen vacancies but dissociation of adsorbed oxygen molecules into atomic oxygen is affected by surface Sr segregation, and polarization resistance degradation is mainly induced by surface Sr segregation. Furthermore, Sr(0.90)Yb(0.10)CoO(3-δ) exhibits excellent thermal stability as well as excellent recovery stability and improved polarization performance after a few pure air/CO2-containing air treatment cycles at 700 °C. However, a hysteresis behavior of polarization performance is observed at 650 °C during gas cycling treatment, which may cause long-term degradation of the Sr(0.90)Yb(0.10)CoO(3-δ) electrode. The different polarization behaviors during gas cycling treatment are induced by different sensitivities of the formed surface strontium carbonate and chemisorbed surface oxo-carbonaceous species to different operating temperatures.

Yb:YAG Lasers for Space Based Remote Sensing

Diode pumped solid state lasers will play a prominent role in future remote sensing missions because of their intrinsic high efficiency and low mass. Applications including altimetry, cloud and aerosol measurement, wind velocity measurement by both coherent and incoherent methods, and species measurements, with appropriate frequency converters, all will benefit from a diode pumped primary laser. To date the "gold standard" diode pumped Nd laser has been the laser of choice for most of these concepts. This paper discusses an alternate 1 micron laser, the YB:YAG laser, and its potential relevance for lidar applications. Conceptual design analysis and, to the extent possible at the time of the conference, preliminary experimental data on the performance of a bread board YB:YAG oscillator will be presented. The paper centers on application of YB:YAG for altimetry, but extension to other applications will be discussed.

Evaluation of reformulated thermal control coatings in a simulated space environment. Part 1: YB-71

The Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center and Wright Laboratory Materials Directorate (WL/ML) have sponsored and effort to effort to reformulate and qualify Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI) spacecraft thermal control coatings. S13G/LO-1, Z93, and YB-71 coatings were reformulated because the potassium silicate binder, Sylvania PS-7, used in the coatings is no longer manufactured. Coatings utilizing the binder's replacement candidate, Kasil 2130, manufactured by The Philadelphia Quartz (PQ) Corporation, Baltimore, Maryland, and undergoing testing at the Materials Directorate's Space Combined Effects Primary Test and Research Equipment (SCEPTRE) Facility operated by the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI). The simulated space environment consists of combined ultraviolet (UV) and electron exposure with in site specimen reflectance measurements. A brief description of the effort at IITRI, results and discussion from testing the reformulated YB-71 coating in SCEPTRE, and plans for further testing of reformulated Z93 and S13G/LO-1 are presented.

Yb fiber laser pumped mid-IR source based on difference frequency generation and its application to ammonia detection

A Yb fiber laser pumped cw narrow-linewidth tunable mid-IR source based on a difference frequency generation (DFG) in a periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystal for trace gas detection was demonstrated. A high power Yb fiber laser and a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode were used as DFG pump sources. This source generated mid-IR at 3 microns with a powers of ~2.5 microW and a spectral linewidth of less than 30 MHz. A frequency tuning range of 300 GHz (10 cm-1) was obtained by varying the current and temperature of the DFB laser diode. A high-resolution NH3 absorption Doppler-broadened spectrum at 3295.4 cm-1 (3.0345 microns) was obtained at a cell pressure of 27 Pa from which a detection sensitivity of 24 ppm m was estimated.

Preparation and Dielectric Measurements of the Rare Earth Green Phases R2BaCuO(5-x) (R = Y, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb)

It has been demonstrated that R2BaCuO(5-x) (R = Y, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb) does not undergo significant densification unless the sintering temperatures are near the incongruent melting point or the sintering times are long. Good quality powders of Y2BaCuO(5-x) have been synthesized by using oxide raw materials or precursors such as acetates and nitrates. The acetates- and the nitrates-derived yttrium green phase resulted in finer particle sizes, acceptable dielectric properties and lower melting temperatures than those processed via oxide raw materials. The hot pressing technique has been employed to produce a dense R2BaCuO(5-x) (R=Y,Gd) substrate with satisfactory dielectric properties. Reactivity to reducing conditions, i.e. graphite die, limited the optimization of the properties. A high sensitivity to the annealing atmosphere has been demonstrated in Y2BaCuO,.,,. Oxygen treatment at 950 OC has been shown to improve the dielectric properties while treatment in nitrogen, at the same temperature, degraded desirable properties. A high sensitivity to the annealing atmosphere has been demonstrated in Y2BaCuO(5-x). Oxygen treatment at 950 C has been shown to improve the dielectric properties while treatment in nitrogen, at the same temperature, degraded desirable properties. The dielectric constants of the rare earth green phases R2BaCuO(5-x) were found to be low. Relaxation peaks were detected at low temperatures (T less than 150 K) and at high temperatures (150 less than T greater than 420 K). The dielectric losses and conductivities at 77 K were measured to be in the range of 10(exp -4) and 10(exp -12) (Omega-cm)(exp -1), respectively. Many parameters were found to exhibit dependencies on the rare earth cation sizes.

High-Speed Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Northrop YB-49 Airplane

Tests were conducted to find the effects of compressibility on the longitudinal stability and control of a 1/7-scale semispan model of the Northrop YB-49 airplane. Lift, drag, pitching moment, and elevon hinge moments were measured and are presented in graphical form. The results show that, due to a loss of lift on the outboard portion of the wing, the longitudinal static stability decreased rapidly as the Mach numbers increased above 0.735 the model experienced a climbing moment at positive lift coefficients. Also, a longitudinal-control effectiveness began to decrease at a Mach number of about 0.725

Thermal Stability of M x O y Doped Zirconia Aerogels (M = Y, Yb, Gd, Ce, Ca) Studied Through 1200°C

The high porosities and low densities of ceramic aerogels offer outstanding insulative performance in applications where weight is a critical factor. The high surface area-to-volume ratios and specific surface areas provide extremely low thermal conductivity, but also contribute to rapid densification of the pore structure at elevated temperatures. This densification diminishes their favorable properties and inhibits use of aerogels in high temperature applications. This work contributes to a design framework for thermally stable aerogels via the study of dopant chemistry (Y, Yb, Gd, Ca, Ce) in zirconia aerogels. The structural evolution was studied to 1200°C using nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The role of dopant identity and concentration in thermal stability was elucidated. In context of the design framework, dopant chemistry is an aggregate for many closely related material properties, each of which may contribute to aerogel structural evolution. To develop a truly predictive design framework for ceramic-based aerogels, systematic and comprehensive evaluation of thermodynamic and kinetic properties must be performed in conjunction with studies on structural evolution.

Effects of CMAS Application on the Isothermal and Gradient Thermal Cycling Behavior of a Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 EBC

Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are critical to the continued advancement of gas turbine hot section materials technology. EBCs are required to protect Si-based ceramics such as silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) from oxidation and corrosion in the combustion environment. One of the current challenges concerning EBC lifetime is the thermochemical reactions between calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) deposits and the EBC that leads to changes in both composition and stress state. These changes can severely reduce the integrity of the EBC leading to crack formation, delamination, and spallation. Current techniques for evaluating CMAS in the laboratory rely on the pre-application of CMAS. Two commonly used application methods to deposit CMAS on EBC materials are tape-casting and air spray. In both methods, the CMAS is applied to the EBC surface at ambient temperature, and then subject to a heat treatment process for binder burnout. The purpose of this study is to compare the tape-cast and air spray methods on the CMAS corrosion of an ytterbium disilicate (Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 ) EBC subject to isothermal, and gradient thermal cycling. The results highlight if any differences exist in the CMAS infiltration kinetics between the two application methods.

Efficient Quenching of Population Trapping in Excited Yb(+)

We report on a study to determine the efficiency of various buffer gases in quenching the population trapping states of laser-excited ytterbium ions. The ions were confined in an rf-dc hybrid trap, and their (2)S(.5) left and right arrow (2)P(3/2) transition was excited with 329-nm laser light. Buffer gases used include H2, N2, CO2, Ar, and He at several different pressure regimes. We have identified N2 to be highly efficient in quenching the population of the trapping states and thus be the most suitable buffer gas to use with ytterbium for the development of a trapped-ion microwave frequency standard.

Foreign Object Damage in Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 Environmental Barrier Coatings

Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs) have been developed as an enabling technology for silicon carbide based ceramic matrix composites in gas turbine engines. Two of the key failure mechanisms identified in EBC systems are foreign object damage (FOD) and the oxidative growth of a SiO 2 thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer that can lead to premature coating spallation. Previously the effects of FOD on NASA’s second generation Ytterbium Disilicate EBC were studied and recently it was shown that the addition of oxide modifiers resulted in improved oxidation resistance in the EBC. This work will compare FOD of the baseline Ytterbium Disilicate EBC to the that of the modified EBC. FOD was performed at room temperature using a 1.59 mm hardened steel ball with projectile velocities of 50-300 m/s. Additionally, the effects of oxidation via cyclic steam exposure prior to impact were investigated.
