The linear phase correction of modulation of intensity emerging from zero effort (MIEZE) with magnetic Wollaston prisms

This study proposes the use of two magnetic Wollaston prisms (MWPs) to correct for the linear Larmor phase aberration of modulation of intensity emerging from zero effort (MIEZE), introduced by the transverse size of the sample. With this approach, the contrast of the intensity modulation can be maximized at any scattering angle of interest such that the same contrast as the direct transmission geometry can be fully recovered. The optimum magnetic fields required for the MWPs depend only on the scattering angle and the frequencies of the radio-frequency flippers, and they are independent of the neutron wavelength and beam divergence, which makes the approach suitable for both pulsed and continuous neutron sources.

Spin echo small-angle neutron scattering using superconducting magnetic Wollaston prisms

Here, we show the implementation of superconducting magnetic Wollaston prisms for spin echo small-angle neutron scattering. Two calibration methods for the spin echo length are presented: one utilizing spin echo modulated small-angle neutron scattering and the other based on the neutron refraction by quartz wedge crystals. Our experimental results with polystyrene nano-particle colloids showcase the system’s efficacy in measuring both dilute and concentrated colloidal systems. Additionally, investigations into the pore diameter and pitch of a nano-porous alumina membrane demonstrate its capability in analyzing nano-porous materials. Furthermore, we discuss potential optimizations to further extend the accessible spin echo length.

Novel design for a polarizing DUV spectrometer using a Wollaston prism and its application as a diagnostic for measuring Thomson scattering data in the presence of strong self-emission backgrounds

We present a novel design for an optical spectrometer for use in ultraviolet Thomson scattering measurements of plasma parameters in high energy density (HED) inertial confinement fusion experiments on large-scale high-energy laser facilities. In experiments investigating high-Z plasmas, the fidelity of measurements is commonly limited by signal/background ratios approaching or exceeding unity. An alpha barium borate Wollaston prism can provide both spectral dispersion and polarization channel separation, allowing simultaneous measurement of both the Thomson scattering signal and plasma self-emission along a single line of sight and in a single experiment, which should greatly improve data quality and reduce the opportunity cost of taking high quality measurements. Here, we present a basic discussion of the design and a worked example of an instrument designed to take fourth harmonic electron plasma wave measurements in HED experiments at the OMEGA laser facility.

A compact electromagnetic neutron nutator for precise neutron spin manipulation

A superconducting electromagnetic nutator (EMN) capable of generating a magnetic field vector along an arbitrary direction on a 2D plane has been designed. Its performance in precisely manipulating the neutron polarization vector has been tested at the HB2-D polarized development beamline at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. Unlike mechanical nutators that require physical handling or motor-driven actuation to rotate the magnetic field, the magnitude and orientation of the magnetic field produced by the EMN can be controlled electromagnetically. Further, the compact design (~15 mm depth, not including cryogenic housing) of this device ensures ease of coupling within existing superconducting neutron spin manipulation devices, such as magnetic Wollaston prisms (MWP), resonant radio frequency (RF) flippers, spherical neutron polarimetry (SNP) devices, etc.

Spin-textured neutron beams with orbital angular momentum

In this work, we present a rigorous theoretical framework underpinning the technique of spin-echo modulated small-angle neutron scattering (SEMSANS), and show how the technique can be extended in order to generate spin-textured neutron beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM) via birefringent neutron spin-polarization devices known as magnetic Wollaston prisms. Neutron OAM beams are mathematically characterized by a “cork-screw” phase singularity e iℓΦ about the propagation axis where ℓ is the OAM quantum number. To understand the precise relationship between the emergent OAM state and the variety of spin textures realized by various setups, we have developed a path-integral approach that in the interferometric limit makes a judicious use of magnetic Snell's law. We show that our proposed technique produces a complex two-dimensional pattern of spin-OAM entangled states which may be useful as a probe of quantum magnetic materials. We compare our path-integral approach to the well-known single-path Larmor precession model and present a pedagogical derivation of magnetic Snell's law of refraction for both massive and massless particles based on Maupertuis's action principle.
